American Eagle Uses AR Snapchat Lens to Promote Secondhand, Sustainable Clothing Shop

To celebrate Earth Day April 22, American Eagle Outfitters launched RE/AE, a resale shop featuring a curated selection of secondhand and vintage American Eagle clothing items.

The RE/AE retail shop is available through resale platform thredUP, which offers “Resale-as-a-Service” technology to fashion brands, allowing them to create customizable shopping experiences for their customers.

“We are passionate about finding new and exciting ways to connect with our customers and RE/AE’s accessible, digital-first, circular shopping experience provides an opportunity to refresh your closet by shopping pre-loved, iconic styles from a brand that has defined youth culture for decades,” Jennifer Foyle, president, chief creative officer for American Eagle and Aerie, said. “Standing behind our commitment to help create a more sustainable future, the partnership with thredUP innovatively gives new life to clothing and accessories that might otherwise contribute to the throwaway fashion culture we are working to eliminate.”

The inaugural RE/AE collection features 200 items from as early as the 1980s priced between $10-$40.

American Eagle will promote its RE/AE collection through a shoppable augmented reality Snapchat lens that will let Snapchat users browse items in a virtual store on their smart device. Snapchat users will be able to tap on items to view details about them as well as information about secondhand sustainability. Snapchat users will also be able to navigate directly to the RE/AE collection on thredUP, where they can purchase the items.
