Architecture and earthquake: reconstruction in central Italy

Oltre 10000 cantieri in 2 anni

English Version:

In 2016, central Italy was devastated by an earthquake that destroyed entire towns, from the Marches to Lazio, passing through Umbria as well. Now, six years after the Amatrice-Norcia-Visso earthquake sequence, reconstruction is really coming into its own, thanks to architectural projects that aim to redevelop the area.

All thanks to the support of innovative companies in the industry such as Aluprof, a company that specializes in aluminum and offers modern facade systems with sophisticated designs. With more than 70 years of experience, this company is an industry leader. So are the companies that are collaborating in the reconstruction of Central Italy.

Over 10000 construction sites in 2 years

The latest report released by Special Commissioner Giovanni Legnini shows positive numbers. In fact, in the past two years, 10,000 private construction sites have been opened with more than 27,000 applications from local citizens. In contrast, 365 public works have already been completed while another 315 are under development. The same trend is recorded for places of worship.

After the damage of more than 26 billion euros caused by the earthquake, all these projects are a sign of hope, for culture and the local economy. Help is also coming from the Italian government, as the digital portal nextappennino.gov.it has been active since late July 2022. The portal is dedicated to citizens and businesses affected by the 2016 disaster who want to apply for funds and facilities totaling (to be distributed) nearly 2 billion euros. With these funds, reconstruction projects can receive a real boost.

Reconstruction from Norcia to Ancona

Norcia is a town surrounded by the hills of Umbria. The earthquake destroyed the city’s town architecture, regardless of buildings. Including the hotels and restaurant owned by the local Bianconi family. A family, however, that recovered quickly, relaunching its Hotel Seneca a few months after the disaster. Instead, the other establishments were moved to other parts of the region, waiting until the traditional buildings could be renovated. The hotel was such a success that it earned a Michelin star because of its on-site restaurant.

“I think the earthquake to us in Norcia has left the anger of those who don’t want to give up. Indeed, of those who want to move forward without looking at the past but building an even better future,” Vincenzo Bianconi told La Repubblica. In short, it is the story of citizens getting back up. Now, for the city of Norcia, there is also a project for the hospital, closed since 2016.

In contrast, in Arquata, work has begun on the reconstruction of 24 buildings in the Marche town. With 300 million euros coming in for the region, the president of Marche and his aldermen are ready to revitalize the area. However, six years after the earthquake, Mayor Michele Franchi is asking the government not to forget Central Italy, which still needs investment and support.

Investments such as the Verrocchio Bus Station in Ancona, an architectural and reconstruction project by local firm Sardellini Marasca Architetti. In 2021, this plan received THE PLAN AWARD 2021 Honorable Mention in the Transport future category. This is an international award for architecture and interior design. Dedicated to contemporary architecture, this award is a feather in the cap for the Ancona terminal that will open in spring 2023.

Thanks to innovative architecture projects, government funds and tax breaks for citizens, Central Italy is getting back on its feet. Although the road seems long, the number of construction sites open in all regions is a hopeful sign. With the right plans and design, recovery is near, from Marche to Lazio.

5 Things to Know About Using Plugins in Photoshop

You can do a lot in Photoshop. It’s no secret that Photoshop is one of, if not the most powerful photo editing programs in the world. For years, Adobe’s pinnacle program has been the gold standard in photo editing. In the last few years, Photoshop plugins have been on the rise, and there are now thousands of different plugins available for Photoshop.

These plugins can do a variety of things, from adding special effects, to removing noise, or even resizing your photo or using AI technology to remove stray hairs from your model. Many plugins allow you to do things to your image that you otherwise can’t do in Photoshop, while others just have an easier, or more effective way to do things that are already possible to do in Photoshop.

If you’re a Photoshop user and you do not yet have any plugins, you’re missing out. Having powerful Photoshop plugins can expand the power and capabilities of Photoshop by using other software that integrates very well with Photoshop and its non-destructive layer editing system.

Take ON1 for example. For the last 17+ years they’ve been developing Photoshop plugins to create a faster and easier workflow for photographers.

In this post, we’ll look at 5 things that you should know about using plugins in Photoshop.

#1 Plugins Can Give You “Finishing Move” Effects and Filters

Many plugins, especially ON1 Effects, offer many effects that work great to give your photos a finished look. Consider these effects to be like a photo filter that you’d apply at the end of your edit, but they are highly customizable and look much better than your average Instagram photo filter. Some of the best effects for finishing off a photo include Vignette, Dynamic Contrast, and Sharpening. These all work with the single click of a button, and then you have sliders to fine-tune each effect. You can reproduce a lot of these effects and styles in Photoshop alone, but it is really time consuming and difficult to remember all of the steps. Having these styles built right into the plugin saves a ton of time.

#2 Plugins Allow You to Do Things that You Don’t Know How to Do in Photoshop in an Easier Way

Plugins allow you to do things that you otherwise would not know how to do. Photoshop is an advanced program with tons of tools and techniques, but oftentimes these tools are overly complex. Usually, plugins have a very simple and highly effective way to create your desired outcome. Take masking as an example. It can still take a bit of practice to get good masks in Photoshop. A lot of plugins have easier to use masking tools to let you take total control of how your image ends up looking.

#3 Using Plugins with Smart Objects Provides a Completely Non-Destructive Workflow

One of the benefits of using Photoshop is using a non-destructive workflow, and plugins are compatible with this non-destructive workflow. When you’re editing your photo as a smart object, you can launch the plugin from Photoshop with the smart object selected. Then, after you make adjustments, the plugin will appear under the smart object. If you wish to make adjustments to the plugin later, simply double click on the plugin and it will reopen that particular plugin for re-adjustment.

#4 Plugins like ON1 NoNoise AI Provide Much Higher-Quality Noise Reduction than Photoshop

For photo editing, Photoshop is truly the jack of all trades. Because Photoshop is such a large program, many things that you might be able to do, you can do better in a plugin that is dedicated to doing just one single thing. One great example is noise reduction. The options for reducing noise in Photoshop are pretty minimal, and the available options don’t work as well as a plugin. ON1 NoNoise AI uses AI technology to reduce noise, and therefore provide a much higher quality result than Photoshop. See the examples below for a comparison.

#5 Plugins Can Be Used at Any Time While Editing

Most Photoshop plugins can be used at any time during the photo editing process. While some effects created by plugins may work better at the beginning of your edit, other effects might seem more logical to apply at the end. Any of the ON1 Plugins can be used at any time during the editing process during Photoshop, so you don’t need to drastically change your current workflow to incorporate plugins.

Ceteris Paribus by Lorenzo Palombini

We have always felt the need to compare our present sense of aesthetics to the classical one. Possibly out of insecurity or anxiety towards the present, as it is often easier to hold onto our past’s grandeur.

Every day hundreds of thousands of people walk the streets of Rome, (facing the town) in a stereotypical and superficial fashion. A small part of the Roman artistic wealth is constantly under siege, while a huge portion is completely unbeknown to most.

For more than a year I have gone through the streets of the old centre of Rome, following the itineraries of tourists and Romans alike, stopping where they would walk on and observing what they were taking for granted.

Going where an intimacy still lingers, where the ancient sense of beauty seems still unaltered, bringing to light what is accessible to everybody, yet interests few.

“Ceteris paribus” is a corpus of images based on duality: an image glorifies the [its] past, while another underlies its decadence. The distinction is not sharp and finding a line of demarcation is difficult. Reality and fiction are intertwined in a balance which shows all its fragility.

About the author:

4 Tips for the Traveling Smoker

For public health and environmental reasons, smoking is banned in many places in the world. For example, the European Union’s smoking prohibition ranges from banning possession and use to regulating advertisements. Even the entirety of Greece’s isolated Astypalea island has been smoke-free since 2019—the first in the world. Barcelona’s beaches, too, followed suit in 2021 prohibiting beach-goers from smoking to keep the space clean.

Strong EU legislation against tobacco certainly poses a dilemma for smokers who, like everybody else, want to visit, experience, or take photos of Europe. Visitors must respect the laws of the land but going cold turkey may lead to withdrawal symptoms that could ruin your travels. However, don’t give up on that trip just yet because here are five tips for the travelling smoker:

Familiarise yourself with smoking zones

Although there’s a slim chance you will be actually allowed to smoke in a public space in Europe, it’s important to do your research and familiarise yourself with smoking zones. Most can be found in airports. For instance, Italy’s Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport has designated smoking spaces in Terminals 1 and 3 and near the boarding gates. There are more airports that have smoking zones so make it a habit to research and ask before lighting up a cigarette.

Outside the airport, there’s also a bit of leeway for tobacco. Some hotels and restaurants in Barcelona allow you to smoke on their balconies. Just make sure to ask the staff because rules may vary depending on where you’re staying.

Opt for nicotine alternatives instead

A more discreet measure calls for smokeless nicotine alternatives. This is because it’s the smoke (and scent) from cigarettes—its environmental and health effects—that urged tobacco control in the first place. Get your nicotine fix from pouches instead which you can put in your mouth – best of all they are very discreet. With chewing tobacco banned in Europe, nicotine pouches are an ideal alternative as they don’t contain any banned substances. ZYN pouches are some of the most popular nicotine pouch options around. They are available in various flavors and strengths, meaning there is an option for every smoker. They’re also purified using high-tech distillation procedures, so you know they are premium quality.

Nicotine gum is an over-the-counter chewable oral alternative to cigarettes that is another option. A common brand is NicoDerm gum, which supplies you with nicotine minus the tobacco and comes in minty and fruity flavours. Like the aforementioned pouches, the NicoDerm gum has to be lodged in your cheek after chewing for a while—the nicotine enters the bloodstream this way, quickly relieving an urge to smoke.

Replace smoking with something else
You can be cautious when it comes to smoking on holiday… or you can take the trip as an opportunity to gradually kick the habit. Taking cues from Nicotine Anonymous’ 12-step approach, distract yourself from smoking urges by focusing on being mindful about your senses and de-stressing your body’s craving for nicotine. Writing down your thoughts and travel experiences in a journal is one way to be more mindful of your cigarette cessation and more present on your trip. And, since you can’t take quit-smoking products all the time, consider snacking on sugar-free sweets, dried fruits, and nuts to curb smoking cravings.

Be conscious of the odour

Smokers and non-smokers alike can pick up the smell of cigarettes pretty easily. Be courteous enough to minimise, if not completely remove, smoking odour that has the potential to bother other people, especially in smoking-free public places. Pack a multi-purpose odour eliminator that can be sprayed into the air as well as other surfaces.

Travelling can be tricky for smokers with smoking being banned all over Europe in most public places. There are several hacks and nicotine alternatives out there to manage your cigarette cravings, so don’t worry too much when booking that flight to the European city of your dreams.

Stuck on the move: a story by Dániel Gerse

Since the eruption of the war in Ukraine, more than 5 million refugees have entered EU countries and enjoy free movement and hospitality on their whole territory. Not having documents, some refugees get stuck in bordering countries. Moldova is one of them. Here, the “FRIȘPA”(Faculty of International Relations, Political Sciences, and Public Administration) refugee center hosts mainly Ukrainian Roma refugees. This series, as a participatory project, documents their life since the beginning of the war.

All photographs by Daniel Gerse

A high percentage of Roma people are undocumented due partially to the systematic discrimination in their home country. Their options are therefore very limited. One has to stay in the “FRISPA” refugee center, due to the segregation, or they can only choose to apply for asylum in neighboring Romania. The second is a less appealing option for most because it would mean having to navigate a foreign language and being much further from home.

But, Moldova is hosting the highest number of shelter-seekers per capita. Even though the enthusiastic help from the public is unprecedented, the government is having difficulties tackling the situation. The limited resources do not reach this refugee center always in time. The Roma community sometimes would have to wait for essential goods like sugar, tea, and sometimes even water. Once serving as a university building, in “FRIȘPA” the facilities are not proper for accommodating people for longer-term.

Despite the precarious conditions, in the center life is vibrant, birthdays are celebrated, and more and more activities are organized. No matter whether on move or being stuck, people come together in crises. Now, 5 months in, some people are becoming a part of the Moldovan labor market, and slowly getting integrated. But, does the temporary get normalized? And how far the burden of systematic racism carried from their country will reach them wherever they go?

Dániel Gerse is a Hungarian-born documentary photographer and architect based between Moldova and Berlin.
In 2018 at Index.hu, a well-known Hungarian internet news portal, he learned the core of photojournalism. Then, he participated in a photo program at PhotoManhattan School in New York under the mentorship of Skye Tan. The experience of the course led him to his main interest in visual storytelling, which now focuses mainly on marginalized communities.

5 Tips to Detox After a Late-Night Party in Las Vegas

After a late-night party in Las Vegas, you are likely to feel the effects the next day. That last drink puts you over the edge, and you wake up with a splitting headache and dry mouth. This is because alcohol has diuretic properties and causes you to urinate more.

If you lose too much fluid, you become dehydrated, and this can result in various unpleasant symptoms. There are various ways to detox and deal with these symptoms.

1. Have a hangover IV

Alcohol depletes your body of fluid and electrolytes, which is why you can feel so terrible the morning after drinking too much. When you are dehydrated, the blood vessels in your body and brain expand, causing a headache. Your stomach lining is irritated by the alcohol and tries to get rid of the toxins, so you may become nauseous and want to vomit. The body has to work hard to eliminate alcohol, and because your liver is forced to process more toxins than normal, it doesn’t release enough sugar into your blood. This may cause you to feel weak and shaky.

An IV drip will hydrate you, pushing fluid and electrolytes straight into your bloodstream. When your body is properly hydrated, it can flush out toxins. Drip Hydration, The IV Doc and Regenerate Me offer mobile hangover IV Las Vegas treatment. A hangover drip contains IV fluids and electrolytes to hydrate you, as well as B complex vitamins, anti-nausea, and anti-inflammatory medications. You will quickly begin to feel more like yourself when a licensed RN administers a hangover drip at your home.

After a night of drinking, a traditional remedy is to drink some ‘hair of the dog.’ Alcohol on top of the alcohol you have already consumed may make you feel better for a short while, but you will feel worse than before once it wears off. You need to flush the toxins from your body rather than adding to them.

Your body is not as effective at flushing toxins when you are dehydrated. When your body is well-hydrated, your circulatory system can efficiently carry nutrients and oxygen to the tissues and remove toxins.

Drinking ginger tea can be helpful because it has natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities. It helps to relieve nausea and indigestion. Green tea is another good option as it is rich in antioxidants.

Drinks that contain electrolytes, including potassium and sodium, help your body to hold on to the water it needs. Electrolytes help to keep the balance between fluids inside and outside of the cells and regulate various chemical reactions. When dissolved in water, electrolytes have a positive or negative electrical charge.

Sodium is the most abundant electrolyte in the body, and it plays a crucial role in keeping the right balance of fluid in cells. Other electrolytes play vital parts as well.  Your brain and muscles rely on magnesium to turn nutrients into energy, and potassium is especially critical to heart function. Calcium does more than build strong teeth and bones, it also manages your heart rhythm, controls your muscles and transmits signals in your nerves.

B-vitamins are water-soluble vitamins that help with functions such as energy production, nerve functioning, and proper metabolism. Alcohol interferes with the absorption of B-vitamins and depletes them from your system. When you have a B-vitamin deficiency, this leads to a lack of energy and affects your overall sense of well-being.

Taking a vitamin B12 supplement after drinking may help replenish this vitamin in your body, helping you to recover faster. Various other B-vitamins help to metabolize alcohol and can restore your energy levels.

A greasy meal is supposed to help with hangover symptoms according to traditional wisdom. But the reality is a high-fat meal may not be a good idea when your stomach is already feeling delicate, because fat takes a long time to digest. Fast-digesting carbs can raise low blood sugar levels after a late night out drinking. Cereals, toast, crackers, or pasta are easy to digest and can restore blood sugar levels without upsetting your stomach.

A source of protein, such as a hard-boiled egg, can be helpful if you are not feeling nauseous. Eggs contain cysteine, an amino acid, which increases the production of an antioxidant called glutathione. Your body needs more antioxidants after drinking because processing alcohol causes the production of free radicals, which create oxidative stress that can damage cells.

Perpignan: 34th edition of Visa pour l’Image

It seems that around the world every single day, every single year there is a war, a tragedy to cover. Everyone will remember 2022 for the Ukraine war, with many journalist and photojournalist traveling to cover a nonsense conflict which is not going to end any soon. Jean-François Leroy, director of Visa pour l’image- Perpignan asked himself this question:

what should a festival of photojournalism such as Visa pour l’Image do in response to such an event?

In September last year, pictures were screened at Campo Santo showing Afghans fleeing the return of the Taliban, scrambling over planes on the tarmac at Kabul airport. Who could have thought then that such images would be swept from world headlines?

No one perhaps, but certainly we had not imagined the prospect. This year we will obviously be featuring Ukraine, giving the story the coverage it deserves, but we shall not be restricting the program to one single event, no matter how important it is. What’s more, this latest war has highlighted, yet again, so many of the issues confronting professional photographers, while also uncovering new developments in photography.

Key reports have presented the news in the midst of the confusion of war, with substantial input from members of the visual investigation team of The New York Times, working together with their reporters in the field and presenting incontrovertible evidence to contradict the “fake news” spread by Russia on the Bucha massacre. Andthey have provided evidence of atrocities being committed on both sides, confirming the authenticity of a video showing Ukrainian soldiers executing a Russian soldier.

Such developments should not be seen as yet one more nail in the coffin of “conventional” photojournalism, but rather as an additional tool in the news ecosystem providing even stronger backing for stories reported in still pictures and which, here at Visa pour l’Image, is what we have been acclaiming and encouraging for so many years.

The festival has always been a key meeting point for those interested to discover more of the photojournalism world, but also a place for professionals to meet and share their vision, thoughts, experiences with other colleagues. The festival is also welcoming not just those on the field everyday, but also amateur interested on learning more about photography.

I wish to invite not only the professionals in the world of photography, but also amateurs, and all advocates and supporters of freedom to come and explore the many exhibitions displayed in the city of Perpignan, and to come and marvel at the stunning evening programs on the giant screen in Campo Santo.

Yes, come and applaud the work of photojournalists whose range of interests and commitments also go beyond the horrors of the world to perceive the delicacy and beauty of nature, the environment and the human soul.

Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres President of the Association Visa pour l’Image – Perpignan

All the exhibitions are free to the public and are open starting from the 27th of August till September 11th with the following opening hours: from 10am to 8pm.

ON1 Releases the Next-Generation Photo Enlargement Software

ON1 Resize, powered by Genuine Fractals, has been the gold standard for photo resizing and preparing your photo’s final output, and it has been for over twenty years. ON1 says the new ON1 Resize AI is by far the most significant improvement they’ve made to their industry-leading photo enlargement software since the early days of Genuine Fractals.

In the past, interpolation methods were used to add new pixels to photos to make them bigger. You simply can’t stretch an image to be bigger without adding pixels, or the photo becomes pixelated in appearance. ON1 Resize AI uses state-of-art machine learning to create the details and sharpness that get lost when photos are enlarged. Resize AI goes well beyond just keeping the edges sharp. It interprets elements in photos like animal fur, tree bark, feathers, grass, leaves, rock, and skin to man-made textures like concrete, fabric, or brick and keeps those details looking crisp in the enlarged photo. In some instances, Resize AI can create details to keep your enlarged images looking even more clean and crisp than the original.

“We trained ON1 Resize AI on a variety of photos. It can see textures like rocks, skin, fur, feathers, masonry, tree bark, etc. You get the idea. The technology can recreate these textures and make them look realistic in the enlarged photos making super crisp and clean enlargements” says Dan Harlacher, VP of Product.

How It Stands Out from the Competition

ON1 Resize AI is the perfect solution for cropping a section out of your photo if your lens can’t get you close enough or preparing and printing your biggest and best photos. It can crop, resize, and sharpen all at once. It can add wings for printing on canvas or create tiles for a mosaic. You can also batch process images and print them right from the app.

You will be amazed by what you can do with ON1 Resize AI. ON1 Resize AI works as a plugin for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Resize AI goes beyond the average plugins. In Lightroom you can batch process easily with powerful new resizing options. And in Photoshop it can handle layered files with masks, alpha channels, text, and adjustment layers in RGB as well as CMYK, Grayscale and LAB.

“I can see a lot of photographers using this app to crop out sections of their photos. Let’s say you forgot your long lens at home and can’t get close enough to your subject. You can still get a really good photo and even better print with ON1 Resize AI,” adds Craig Keudell, President and CEO of ON1.

Resize AI’s primary features include:

  • Create large prints. Easily crop to a specific paper size, resize the photo with the ultimate detail, and then print it directly or save the file to send to a photo lab.
  • Crisp details. Resize AI upscales your photo to any size and sharpens the final details incredibly well. Even crop a portion of a photo and still have amazing quality and detail which equates to having a longer lens.
  • Breathe new life into old photos. With older digital photos, you can remaster old images, making them bigger, sharper, and cleaner than ever before.
  • Reduce JPG artifacts. Whether you have over-compressed or photos that are small in size, Resize AI can reduce the compression artifacts while creating new details.
  • Gallery Wraps. This feature can add reflected or stretched wings to the edge of your photo to make a canvas gallery wrap.
  • Tiling. Divide the photo into tiles make it easier to print a mural.
  • Batch processing and export. Enlarge a group of photos all at once, and control how they are named, saved, file type, and more.
  • Print presets for easy automation. When it comes to preparing photos for print, knowing the proper resolution for your printer and the correct amount of sharpening for your paper choice can be daunting. In Resize AI, just pick the printer, the type of paper, and the size.
  • Complete printing support. Includes a full print engine to print directly from the app, whether used in standalone mode, or as a plug-in. You can even use Resize’s soft proofing feature to see how your photo will look when printed using specific printer and paper profiles.
  • Powerful workflow integration. Resize AI works either as a standalone application, or as a plugin for Capture One or Adobe’s Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, and Photoshop Elements.
