Goldfish Revives Its Iconic Tagline to Court Health-Conscious Parents

Goldfish crackers is flaunting its healthier side to modern families with playful, handcrafted ads reintroducing its “The Snack That Smiles Back” tagline, as the GLP-1 boom puts pressure on the snack industry.

Mischief @ No Fixed Address created a series of imaginative worlds for the Pepperidge Farm brand to release during the back-to-school season. The campaign highlights the product’s real-cheese ingredients while comedically evoking childhood nostalgia, aiming to put Goldfish on parents’ minds as they pack lunchboxes or stock their cupboards with after-school snacks.

The effort kicks off today (August 3) with two spots shot by stop-motion directors Andy & Adeena through BlinkInk. Cut into 30-, 15-, and 6-second segments, the first film takes place inside a bag of crackers, where a model Goldfish poses for the camera, showing off her evenly baked, real-cheese side.

Another spot takes place on a ‘Late Night with Real Cheese’ talk show as the audience awaits the incoming interviewee. “Our next guest has no artificial colors or flavors. Give it up for…,” says the voiceover, before announcing awkwardly: “Oh. I’m being told he was eaten. Anywho.”

The campaign spans paid, earned, and owned channels and will roll out additional creative over time as part of the broader “The Snack That Smiles Back” platform.

Goldfish first introduced “The Snack That Smiles Back” in the early 2000s. Now, the legacy brand is doubling down on the tried-and-tested power of a nostalgic jingle and a personified mascot, targeting families as the wider snack industry suffers from inflation fatigue and the broader adoption of weight-loss medication.

While Pepperidge Farm owner The Campbell’s Company’s third-quarter results showed a 4% decrease in net sales, its CEO Mick Beekhuizen claimed it was seeing “early signs of progress [in the snacks category] as we prioritize Goldfish’s core of households with kids.”

“‘The Snack That Smiles Back’ has always been more than a tagline. It’s a reflection of the fun, optimism, and personality that have defined the Goldfish brand for generations,” Mike Fanelli, senior director at Goldfish, said in a statement. “As we bring the platform back, we’re building on that legacy with a modern creative approach that invites snackers deeper into the world of Goldfish while celebrating the playful spirit and trusted quality that continue to make us a favorite for families today.”

The Snack That Smiles Back” inspired Mischief’s latest work for the brand, whose goal was “to show that Goldfish is a snack parents can feel good about giving their kids,” said Mischief associate creative director Chris da Roza.

It made us wonder, why are the Goldfish smiling? What’s happening inside those bags that makes them so happy?” he said. “It became an opportunity to show that there’s plenty about Goldfish that makes both kids and parents smile.”

Goldfish named Mischief as its creative agency of record in 2024.

The agency kicked off its account win by rebranding the brand as “Chilean Ses Bass” to court adult snackers, a move the company claims resulted in widespread PR exposure and record sales growth.

And on tax day (April 15), the team invited parents to complete a Goldfish Parent Tax Return to receive two free bags of snacks to settle their snack debt.
