Netflix has renewed its mind-bending sci-fi thriller Dark for a second season
Netflix has officially ordered a second season of its supernatural, German-language series Dark. Just a couple of weeks after the first season premiered, the streaming service says that its “one of [its] most-watched entirely non-English shows.” And that’s not surprising. Dark is one of the most captivating sci-fi thrillers in recent memory, even if it’s a bit hard to wrap your head around its mind-bending plot or its sprawling character list.
In its first, 10-episode season, Dark started out as a blend of horror and mystery that centered on the disappearance of a pair of children against the backdrop of some very weird phenomena. Naturally, that earned it some unfair comparisons to Stranger Things, as the small German town reckoned with the secrets of its past.

A third of the way in, however, Dark takes some bold turns and starts toying with ideas far grander than the show’s marketing material or earlier story beats let on. It effectively becomes a sci-fi show, but with the emotional intelligence and genre-bending smarts of Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival with a dash of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy.
By the end of the season, viewers are left tracking a giant cast across three different generations and three interconnected timelines. It all ends with a staggering cliffhanger that turns the entire narrative on its head. It’s one of Netflix’s best shows, and it’ll be interesting to see where it goes in season two.
