Microsoft’s Project Solara is an Android OS designed for agents instead of apps

However, Microsoft is clear that this is still just a concept. None of it works, but the company is committed to spending money on it as part of its massive AI expansion plans.

Agentic concepts

Microsoft has shown off two concept devices that illustrate where it hopes to go with Project Solara. The more conventional is the Desk Concept, which looks like a typical smart display. It’s got a touchscreen, microphones, and a camera. While you sit at your desk, this gadget would keep you apprised of what your theoretical AI agents are doing on your behalf. It can act as a secondary monitor or become a standalone Windows PC with Windows 365 cloud computing. This concept is built around MediaTek IoT chips.

The other Solara concept skews weirder. What if the work badge at the end of your lanyard had a touchscreen, 5G connectivity, a camera, microphones, and a fingerprint scanner? That’s the Badge Concept. It would have the same Solara software, piping in generative interfaces from your preferred AI agent. Microsoft envisions this Qualcomm-based device providing biometric-authenticated access to your agents—just tap the sensor and start telling your personal robot what to do. It could also record and summarize meetings and use the camera to “take action on the environment,” whatever that means.

You can’t even get in line to buy either of these devices. Microsoft’s next step is to demo its agent-first devices with industry partners, including AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Health, Levi’s, and Target.

Microsoft has struggled to branch out beyond traditional computing and enterprise services, having tried and failed on numerous occasions to gain a foothold in mobile computing. With AI, Microsoft was uncharacteristically at the forefront of change. With its OpenAI deal sputtering, the company is now looking to the future, and this is it: agents instead of apps.

[embedded content]

This is an interesting pitch for how we might actually use AI agents, and it’s not coming totally out of left field. Google is also pursuing agentic interfaces in its search products. At I/O, Google previewed new agent-first search tools that can instantly build dashboards and mini-apps based on your search queries.

As vague and pie-in-the-sky as Project Solara may be, Microsoft is pretty in tune with the rest of big tech’s AI plans. If any of it works, we can only hope it doesn’t lead to a new generation of touchscreen millstones around our necks.

Mathematicians warn of AI threats to profession as industry encroaches

Recommendations for humans

So what is a human mathematician to do during the AI boom? The Leiden Declaration recommends that individual mathematicians transparently disclose their use of AI tools, retain responsibility for the correctness of their mathematical work, continue crediting human authors while properly attributing work even if AI tools make that difficult, and consider using only AI tools that align with the values articulated in the declaration

The declaration also reminds mathematicians that mathematics has “applications in the development of technology for use in warfare, oppression, mass surveillance, and the undermining of democracy,” and so mathematicians should make ethical decisions accordingly when choosing external partnerships with tech companies.

Professional mathematical organizations can develop guidelines for the use of AI and other automated tools in publication and review, protect the rights of researchers as authors through licensing agreements that prevent their work from being used as training data without consent, and support the role of peer-reviewed publications. The declaration also suggests such organizations “actively prepare to become involved if major mathematical results are claimed using unconventional means.”

The authors of the declaration also offer straightforward recommendations for policymakers, including “protect the rights of authors,” “regulate the artificial intelligence industry,” and “invest in public computational infrastructure.” Under “don’t believe the hype,” the declaration warns about how “there is currently a strong commercial incentive on the part of the technology industry to overstate the capabilities of their products.”

Lastly, the declaration acknowledges that the tech industry “has offered lucrative jobs, monetary rewards, computing resources, and intellectually stimulating opportunities that some mathematicians have found attractive… in an era of underfunding of higher education and precarious academic employment.” It calls on such collaborations between mathematicians and the tech industry to abide by the standards laid out in the declaration.

“By endorsing the declaration, the IMU affirms that the future of mathematical research must be guided by human judgment, fair and transparent practices, and the shared values of the global mathematical community,” said Ulrike Tillmann, vice president of the International Mathematical Union, in a statement. “Mathematics is, and should always remain, a profoundly human endeavor.”

Android phones will soon be able to detect spoofed calls and impersonation scams

We’re expecting Android 17 to begin rolling out later this month, but first, Google has a batch of updates for the wider Android device ecosystem. As usual, some of the new features are limited to specific devices, and others require using Google’s apps. But if you don’t mind the latter, you can get automated protection from the growing threat of deepfake phone scams.

According to Google, “impersonation fraud” is one of the most common types of financial scams. The FTC tracked almost $3 billion in losses from such scams during 2024, and the improvements in AI voice cloning tools more recently are making the schemes easier to pull off. The voice models are becoming so capable that it can be difficult to identify a fake caller even when an AI is imitating someone you talk to every day.

Google’s solution is an expansion of the system it debuted last month for verified financial calls. Now, a similar feature will work with anyone in your contacts. Many of the most effective deepfake scams involve spoofing a contact’s number, which makes the call look more legitimate when your phone lights up. Victims of these scams are then greeted by an accurate re-creation of the person’s voice spinning a yarn that involves an urgent need for cash.

Google’s scam call detection feature will be available on all phones running Android 12 or higher, but it does require you to have three Google apps installed: Phone by Google, Contacts, and Google Messages. Depending on your device, you may already have these. They’re the preloaded options on Pixel and Motorola phones, and Samsung has now switched over fully to Google Messages. Google claims that Phone by Google is the most widely used dialer, but that doesn’t seem right—Samsung has its own phone app, and it’s the largest Android OEM by far.

The future of brands gets decided here. Join the industry’s top marketers at Brandweek for the ideas, insights, and connections shaping what’s next. Get your ticket.

Here is a marketing riddle: Take one of the best B2B brand builders alive, give him a big title, a near-trillion-dollar company to market, and the most famous product on earth to sell.

Why would that be a disaster waiting to happen?

Welcome to Colin Fleming’s new job at OpenAI.

Fleming is the real deal. Thirteen years at Salesforce, culminating as evp of global marketing. Two years as CMO of ServiceNow, working wonders. He knows how to take a complex B2B product, build a brand around it, and drive pipeline. He isn’t the kind of marketer you hire when you are serious about enterprise revenue, he is literally at the very top of the list. But he may be walking into the hardest marketing job in the world.

Fleming joins as CMO, Business—a new title, deliberately scoped to OpenAI’s enterprise push. His predecessor, Kate Rouch, stepped down in April after fighting late-stage breast cancer through her entire tenure. She led global campaigns, ran back-to-back Super Bowl ads, built the marketing function from the ground up, and did it all while undergoing treatment. An extraordinary act of professional commitment.

But OpenAI’s brand is in trouble right now. Start with the structural chaos. In the space of a few weeks earlier this year, the company lost its CMO, its COO transitioned to a vague “special projects” role, its head of product took medical leave, and a series of senior researchers walked out. The company is simultaneously preparing for an IPO while projecting losses of $14 billion by the end of 2026.

That is not a stable platform from which to build an enterprise brand.

Then there is the advertising decision. In January, OpenAI confirmed it would begin running ads inside ChatGPT’s free tier. The format is contextual, clearly labeled, separated from responses. Rationally it all makes sense. Enterprise and paid tiers remain ad-free. OpenAI insists the ads will not influence ChatGPT’s answers.

But we do not live in a rational world, even in the highly processed realm of AI. A Harris Poll survey taken in the days before launch found that 75% of Americans would trust AI shopping recommendations less if its results were sponsored. When you await answers from a blinking cursor, answers you don’t know the answer to, trust becomes the single most important asset OpenAI has, especially in the enterprise market.

Fleming understands this territory better than almost anyone. His entire career has been built on the specific challenge of selling to procurement committees, convincing CFOs, and building the kind of sustained brand credibility that closes enterprise deals.

Salesforce under Marc Benioff was the master class in B2B brand-building: clear positioning, massive share of voice, distinctive brand assets, relentless customer success storytelling. Fleming absorbed all of it, so much so that ServiceNow followed the same playbook, and might even have applied it better. He knows exactly what enterprise buyers need to hear, and how often they need to hear it.

But Fleming’s Salesforce instincts will now collide directly with the OpenAI reality.

Salesforce and ServiceNow sold trust as their core proposition. Their customers willingly passed on sensitive data, critical workflows, revenue operations. The brand promise was: we will never screw you.

That promise was credible because neither company faced a structural conflict between its consumer product and its enterprise product. OpenAI does. The free ChatGPT that runs ads is the same model enterprise customers are being asked to trust with their most sensitive internal data. That dissonance is not trivial.

Then there is the competitive context. Anthropic is suddenly the beast in the room. It is growing faster, smarter, cleaner, and it’s winning in the regulated industries—financial services, healthcare, legal—where enterprise deals are biggest and trust matters most.

Meanwhile Google’s Gemini is slashing prices and going after developer mindshare. Fleming is not entering a market where OpenAI can coast on brand halo. He is entering a knife fight with a smaller-than-expected pocket knife, and facing a guy with the machete and a woman with an unlimited arsenal of throwing daggers.

The dual-CMO structure is also a potential issue. OpenAI has split marketing into two roles: one for consumer, one for business. Presented as sophistication, it’s actually an admission of conflict. The consumer brand and the enterprise brand have diverged to the point where one person cannot credibly manage both. That is a strategy problem, and not one Fleming can easily solve.

None of this should be read as a prediction that Fleming will fail. He is exactly what OpenAI needs. If anyone can build a credible B2B brand on top of a messy underlying reality, it is someone with his track record.

But good hires do not always fix declining fortunes. They work within them, around them, and sometimes despite them.

The real question for OpenAI is not whether Fleming is talented enough for this job. The question is whether the company is willing to make the harder strategic decisions that Fleming will inevitably ask. About product separation, about the advertising model, about what OpenAI for Business actually stands for.

Hiring a marketer like Fleming is just the start of the problem being sorted.

Anthropic Expanding Mythos Access to 150 New Organizations

Anthropic announced on Tuesday that it is expanding Project Glasswing, its collaborative program aimed at securing critical software using AI.

The initiative, launched with roughly 50 initial partners in early April, granted them access to Claude Mythos Preview. Those partners have since used Mythos to scan codebases and identified thousands of vulnerabilities.

The expansion adds roughly 150 new organizations, each required to meet Anthropic’s standards before gaining access. These partners are based in more than 15 countries and include providers of critical infrastructure in sectors such as power, water, healthcare, communications, and hardware.

Many are vendors and maintainers of widely used codebases relied upon by governments and other organizations worldwide.

A common factor among the new partners is the potential impact of a successful cyberattack targeting their products, which could affect more than 100 million people for most participants and carry significant national and global security implications.

The expansion of Project Glasswing follows collaboration with existing partners, the security industry, open source software maintainers, and the US government.

Anthropic has not shared the expanded list of partners, but the Financial Times reported that the newly added organizations include Okta, Samsung, the EU cybersecurity agency ENISA, and NATO.

The AI giant reported recently that Mythos identified more than 23,000 potential vulnerabilities, with the company estimating that more than 6,000 will be confirmed as severe flaws.

Organizations such as Mozilla, Palo Alto Networks, and Cloudflare saw good results when turning Mythos against their own products.

With Mythos and other AI tools rapidly discovering vulnerabilities, the problem now shifts to verifying and patching them. For instance, of the thousands of security bugs found by Mythos, only 75 critical and high-severity issues have been patched.

Anthropic says Mythos can also help with verification and patching, and the company is working with others to “substantially scale up the reviewing and patching of vulnerabilities in open-source software”.

“We’re also working on sharing ideas and best practices for disclosing vulnerabilities to open-source maintainers, with the intent of making these reports easier to triage and to act upon,” Anthropic said.

The Zero-Knowledge Threat Actor and the End of Responsible Disclosure

One of the most dangerous outcomes of the rise of AI in cybersecurity is the rise of the zero-knowledge threat actor. A threat actor who has negligible technical expertise but enough malicious intent. This actor can leverage AI, turn limited skills into usable offensive capability via generating malicious code, exploiting vulnerabilities, shaping attack steps and guiding execution.

AI Has Changed the Nature of Attacks

AI has not changed the traditional objectives of cybercrime:  stealing credentials, exploiting vulnerabilities, gaining privileged access, stealing sensitive data, disrupting operations, and impacting business continuity. What has changed is the speed of discovery, the democratization of capability, and the acceleration of attacks.

AI is making hidden software weaknesses easier to find. AI-powered tools are increasing the speed and volume of vulnerability discovery and exploitation, while vulnerability exploitation has surged to become the leading initial access vector for breaches, accounting for 31% of incidents, according to Verizon’s 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report (PDF). AI has also ensured that more people can participate in attacks regardless of expertise, attack preparation times are more compressed, and it is far easier to adapt attack campaigns quickly to cover more targets, environments, and defensive responses.

Zero-Knowledge Actors Have More Scope

AI can help attackers generate malware, create malicious payloads, bypass simple security checks, and convert vague malicious intent into functional code. These capabilities are no longer in the realm of speculation.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

But as AI is evolving, new risks are entering the chat. AI can now also support target analysis, reconnaissance, vulnerability surfacing, attack-vector selection, social engineering, exploit modification, and the integration of various kill chain aspects through multi-stage orchestration.

This is shifting the capability baseline, with organizations now having to defend against adversaries who may lack deep technical knowledge but can use AI to plan more steps, test more options, and execute attacks that were previously beyond their reach.

While human judgment is still involved in choosing targets, managing infrastructure, and turning access into impact, the threshold of expertise is clearly changing.

Easy Entry Points for Zero-Knowledge Attackers

Large enterprises are targets for attackers, but smaller organizations are better suited to zero-knowledge threat actor attacks. A weak patching culture, limited monitoring tools, a lack of a very large security team, and delayed incident response are among the security gaps that make smaller organizations easy targets.

These smaller organizations are also part of larger business ecosystems, integral to their supply chains, and function as software providers, managed services partners, logistics providers, and more. For zero-knowledge threat actors, it is natural to see small organizations as initial targets that serve as doorways to a larger organization.

The Shrinking Disclosure Window

‘Zero-day’ refers to a vulnerability that is publicly exploited before a vendor patch exists. Coordinated vulnerability disclosure begins the moment a researcher privately notifies a vendor of an identified flaw. Between that initial notification and public disclosure lies a structured process: validating the vulnerability, assessing its severity, building a patch, coordinating with affected parties, and giving users enough time to apply the patch.

Different organizations will have different responsible disclosure timelines, but irrespective of these timelines, there is no doubt that zero-knowledge threat actors are putting immense pressure on the disclosure window. These AI-enabled actors can not only discover vulnerabilities quickly but also exploit them faster. The security team, therefore, has to act quickly. The traditional breathing room is disappearing, which, in turn, is affecting responsible disclosure.

Responding to Zero-Knowledge Threat Actors

The first thing you must do to address zero-knowledge threat actors is not take them lightly. In fact, AI support has made them very dangerous and unpredictable. This should be the starting point of your defensive posture:

  • Employee Awareness: Give employees a drill-down security awareness training focusing on AI-enabled phishing messages, impersonation attempts, and social engineering campaigns. Expose employees to realistic simulations of AI-generated phishing attacks, so that they don’t trust even hyper-personalized messages by default.
  • Red Teaming: Your AI systems must be tested against malicious prompts, jailbreaking, and all manner of misuse scenarios.  With attackers getting better at leveraging AI to probe AI systems, testing will tell you whether your AI systems can be manipulated or made to expose sensitive information.
  • End-to-End Visibility: Zero-knowledge threat actors have been known to harness AI to test different attack paths, bring variation in their attacks, and quickly move across users, devices, cloud services, applications, and networks. The use of fragmented security tools means that signals are scattered across different systems, making attacks difficult to detect. An integrated security architecture like SASE is the way forward for monitoring, detecting, and analyzing suspicious activity across the length and breadth of the environment.
  • Faster Patching: Faster vulnerability discovery demands accelerated remediation.  Patching is the underrated front-line defense against zero-knowledge threat actors. Organizations should keep critical systems, exposed applications, and widely used software up to date. Don’t make things easier for threat actors by keeping known weaknesses open.
  • Planned Incident Response: Your security posture should be ready for an attack at any given time. Rehearse incident response with tabletop exercises, clearly lay out escalation paths, and focus on recovery testing. This helps the organization bake resilience into the cybersecurity posture.
  • Security Frameworks: Adopt recognized AI security frameworks to address AI-specific risks surfaces. MITRE ATLAS helps teams map adversarial tactics targeting ML systems. The OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications is essential if your organization builds or deploys LLM-based tools. Google’s Secure AI Framework (SAIF) provides principles for embedding security into AI development lifecycles.

In Summary

AI has not made every attacker advanced, but it has made low-skill attackers far more capable. For security teams, the answer is not panic; it is sharper visibility, faster action, and practiced response. This will help organizations address zero-knowledge threat actors proactively rather than scrambling to deliver an effective response.

Meta AI Hands Over High-Profile Instagram Accounts to Hackers

Threat actors compromised multiple high-profile Instagram accounts last week by simply asking Meta’s AI-powered account recovery assistant to hand them over.

The attackers exploited a logic flaw in the AI assistant, a classic ‘confused deputy’ issue, to have their own email addresses linked to the targeted accounts and take them over.

Confused deputy weaknesses have been known to security researchers for decades and involve tricking a deputy that has elevated privileges into performing specific actions on the attacker’s behalf.

In this case, the Meta AI assistant had API access to account management systems, being deployed to help users re-link email addresses, reset passwords, and verify they are the owners of specific accounts.

Due to the logic flaw, hackers were able to simply ask the chatbot to link a targeted account to a new email address, under the pretense that they had been hacked or that they had lost access to the previously linked email address.

To bypass Meta’s fraud detection protections, they used VPNs to appear as if they were in the target’s geographic location.

Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.

The AI assistant happily linked the new email address and then sent a code that allowed the attackers to reset the password for the targeted account, locking the rightful owner out.

In the event that the chatbot asked for a selfie to verify account ownership, the attackers reportedly modified victims’ photos using AI tools and submitted the altered images.

Inexplicably, the attack also bypassed two-factor authentication (2FA) protections for the targeted accounts, and some victims say they were never notified of the password reset attempts.

Hundreds of high-profile accounts were reportedly compromised and immediately sold on the dark web. Some miscreants were seen sharing videos and instructions on how the account takeover is performed.

Using the trick, the hackers gained access to the Obama White House handle and to the accounts of Sephora and John Bentivegna, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force.

Instagram parent company Meta has resolved the issue, and the exploit no longer works, but it’s unclear how many accounts might have been affected. SecurityWeek has emailed the company for a statement and will update this article if it responds.

“This is a great illustration of why AI agent authorization is the harder, and more critical, problem than authentication. Meta’s bot verified nothing about who was asking; it just helpfully did what it was told to do, up to and including sending the attacker a confirmation code to make sure the new email address was valid. The industry is pretty focused on keeping AI from saying bad things. That’s fine, as long as we don’t completely overlook whether AI should be allowed to do what it’s trying to do,” FusionAuth senior director Dan Moore commented.

Anthropic, the maker of AI assistant Claude, filed for an initial public offering on Monday, formally setting in motion a move that will test investor appetite for one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched AI companies.

The filing “gives us the option to go public after the SEC completes its review,” the company said in a statement, adding that timing, share count and pricing would ultimately depend on market conditions. Those details have yet to be determined.

The announcement lands just days after Anthropic closed a $65 billion Series H round at a $965 billion post-money valuation, according to the company—putting it ahead of rival OpenAI’s last reported $730 billion valuation, underscoring how quickly the upper tier of AI startups is being repriced.

If it goes ahead, Anthropic’s IPO would place it among a small cluster of heavyweight tech companies expected to hit public markets this year, alongside names like OpenAI and SpaceX, as investors reassess the long-term economics of AI.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, including Dario Amodei, Anthropic has built its reputation around safety-focused large language models and positioned Claude as a competitor to ChatGPT.

More recently, the company has been pushing further into enterprise marketing workflows, including tools like Claude Design—an AI system aimed at generating slides, one-pagers and other sales and marketing materials, ADWEEK previously reported, signaling a more direct bid for Madison Avenue budgets.

When reached for comment, Anthropic pointed to its public statement released on Monday.

Customer data platform Hightouch has developed a new tool that allows advertisers bypass third-party identity providers to directly confirm which consumers saw their ads placed by The Trade Desk.

Any advertiser transacting through The Trade Desk gets reports on each ad impression, click, and conversion, among other campaign performance data. But details specifying who actually saw or clicked on an ad are generally anonymized through privacy-safe identifiers like cookies, device IDs, or third-party IDs like The Trade Desk’s UID2. Without identity providers, there has historically been no way to directly match those anonymized IDs with customers in the advertiser’s own database.

Startup offers free home cleaning—if it can record it all for robot training

Although the Shift app website claims “there is no catch” for the free cleaning, the FAQ notes that booking an appointment requires payment information and warns that clients may be charged if they cancel appointments with less than 24 hours’ notice or are not available to let cleaners in at the appointment time. The Shift app terms of service document also seeks to absolve the platform of responsibility for any property damage, theft, or personal injury that may ensue from the cleaning appointments.

The reason behind the promotion

So why would a tech startup offer free cleaning? The first-person cleaning data is supposedly valuable enough for the company to “offer cleaning services free of charge for a limited time” by covering the cost of the professional cleaners, according to the Shift app website. The Shift app’s privacy policy describes the “core of microagi’s business” as “the collection of data for robotics training.”

The temporary free cleaning offer for New York City homes may also serve as a promotional hook for the Shift app’s main purpose—recruiting people to wear a “recording headstrap” to “capture short videos of everyday household or professional tasks” in exchange for supposedly getting paid $20 per hour plus bonuses.

That primary function for the Shift app is briefly highlighted in the promotional video about free home cleanings, which shows US general manager Harry Kilberg claiming the platform already pays “tens of thousands of people” across 15 countries to record daily work and chores.

The main Shift app website, designed to sign up contributors, suggests that more than 10,000 “operators” have already been collectively paid more than $5 million in the first quarter of the 2026 fiscal year.

That makes MicroAGI one of the latest known startups to be recruiting and paying ordinary people to record their everyday tasks to provide robot training data. Other such companies include Encord and Micro1, with the latter having hired thousands of contract workers across 50 countries such as India, Nigeria, and Argentina, according to MIT Technology Review.

The Shift app’s website suggests MicroAGI is launching an aggressive recruiting campaign with dozens of blog posts tailored toward NYC university and college students, teachers, restaurant and delivery workers, and even residents of specific neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, the company has spread Craigslist postings targeting residents of other US cities such as Boston—and MicroAGI founder and CEO Bercan Kilic teased the prospect of the Shift app soon launching in additional cities such as London, Munich, and Zurich.
