Google Folds Gemini Deeper Into DV360 to Automate Media Planning and Buying

Google is turning its demand-side platform for advertisers, Display & Video 360 (DV360), into an AI-powered media buyer backed by Gemini, the tech company’s flagship family of AI models.

While Gemini tools have been baked into DV360 since at least last spring, they were primarily used to aid marketers in audience discovery, surface reporting insights, and offer tweaks to help optimize campaigns here and there. Now, Gemini will become the true operating layer of the DSP, moving upstream and taking on a larger role in media planning, the company explained at its NewFronts presentation in Manhattan on Monday.

“Marketers can upload their media plan and automatically translate it into a comprehensive campaign setup,” said Bill Reardon, general manager of the enterprise platform at Google Ads, on a call with the press.

In its presentation on Monday, the company also hyped up additional AI-powered updates for ad buyers: AI will be deployed within DV360 to help manage real-time fluctuations in live sports inventory across connected TV; and soon, marketers will be able to use Ads Advisor, an agent embedded in the Google Ads Console, to build custom reporting dashboards.

Beyond supercharging the buyer experience with automation, Google also indicated that it is investing more deeply in cross-channel measurement—specifically in connected TV attribution. The company is debuting Confidential Publisher Match, a new identity model that can link marketers’ first-party data with signals from streamers like Roku in a privacy-safe trusted execution environment.

“This shift empowers you with a cross-device conversion memory, connecting a CTV impression directly to a purchase,” Reardon said.

The push could help Google level up its measurement capabilities on non-owned inventory environments in CTV, specifically, an area where it’s historically been weaker than rivals like The Trade Desk.

To further buoy its CTV measurement push, Google is turning to retail media data.

The company is working with Kroger to integrate the retail giant’s first-party shopper data into YouTube and Google’s other partner inventory. The company will also roll out SKU-level reporting in DV360, “so brands can see the precise impact of their YouTube and display ads on Kroger sales,” Reardon explained.

“This really changes how brands think about YouTube and its direct impact on sales,” Christine Foster, Kroger’s group vp of commercial strategy and operations, said in a statement. “Now, advertisers can reach Kroger shoppers on the most-watched video platform in the world—and measure how their spend drives sales at the SKU level. The reach is massive, the ability to unify once-siloed efforts is profound, and the opportunity to connect with shoppers across the full customer journey has never been better.”

In fact, YouTube is the cornerstone of Google’s NewFronts pitch this year. It’s the company’s crown jewel, expected to bag nearly 12% of all CTV ad revenues this year, per Emarketer estimates.

While YouTube isn’t getting any new ad formats, Google is aggressively pushing for wider adoption of a select number of the platform’s ad offerings. Now, the company said Monday, YouTube’s pause ads and creator takeovers—which allow a brand to buy out all of a specific creator’s ad inventory for a select period—can be bought through DV360.

Increasingly, the DSP is being designed to act as a buying environment that reinforces Google’s walled garden, encouraging buyers to transact on YouTube in particular.

Reardon only underscored the notion that Google is more tightly binding its buy-side tool with its owned inventory and measurement capabilities. “Gemini, with [DV360] and YouTube, will be core to the success of the future of advertising,” he said.

YouTube isn’t satisfied with serving one or two slices of brands’ creator marketing demands. It wants the whole pie.

On Monday, ahead of YouTube’s NewFronts presentation this week, the Google-owned video site announced that it is repackaging BrandConnect, its tool for connecting YouTube creators with brands for sponsorship deals, into what will now be known as Creator Partnerships—and giving it an AI makeover. The platform will be backed by Gemini, Google’s suite of frontier AI models, to intelligently pair advertisers with creators that suit their needs.

“It’s historically been challenging for advertisers to find the right creator to work with and then scale their efforts globally,” said Melissa Nikolic, director of product management for YouTube Creator Ads, on a call with press. Now, she said, the company is integrating Google’s AI spine into YouTube’s suite of creator tools—a change that she expects will “make it easier for brands to discover and work with creators at scale.”

Creator Partnerships will also be integrated with YouTube Studio for creators, Google Ads, and Google’s demand-side platform Display & Video 360 (DV360) into one centralized hub for advertisers.

Within Google Ads or DV360, users can generate a target list of YouTube creators through simple natural language queries.

“You can say, ‘Find me us tech creators reviewing sports gear with high Gen Z retention,’ and our AI will surface creators who match, and will include insights about their channel, their audience, sample videos, and more,” Nikolic explained.

Gemini analyzes billions of data points on everything from brand mentions to subscriber growth to surface these recommendations.

“It’s designed to save time for brands who traditionally have had to manually sift through eligible creators in the YouTube Partner Program, and may have missed some really great creators. It also gives creators of all sizes more opportunities to be discovered,” Nikolic said.

When possible matches are identified, advertisers can then filter down to a shortlist of top picks and reach out en masse to multiple creators at once. Within the platform, advertisers can track and manage their creator deals.

With the overhaul, YouTube aims to eliminate the need for laborious influencer discovery that has historically required agency planning and resources paired with manual keyword- or tag-based searches.

In the near future, the process will be even easier, Nikolic suggested: “In the coming months, advertisers will be able to simply input their campaign brief. Our AI will recommend the ideal creators to drive a marketer’s goal.”

YouTube has also embedded a unified measurement feature into Creator Partnerships. Here, paid ads and organic creator content performance data come together in one workflow, in theory making it easier for marketers to get a clean, deduplicated look into the material impact of their creator partnership investments.

The company is making Creator Partnerships available to some partners via API, enabling marketing agencies or SaaS companies to plug the discovery and matching capabilities into their own tools.

“Creator marketing has matured into a core growth channel, but the industry has lacked the depth of measurement needed to scale with confidence,” said Tim Sovay, the chief business development and partnerships officer at influencer marketing platform Creator IQ, in a statement. He said that the rollout of the Creator Partnerships API will help give advertisers “trusted, first-party insights that help unlock deep creator audience understanding within their existing workflows,” whether on YouTube or on another platform like CreatorIQ.

On the whole, however, YouTube is now positioning itself as a comprehensive operating system for creator marketing—compared to a platform that simply aids in influencer partnerships. In the process of that transformation, YouTube could threaten the businesses of third-party creator platforms.

OpenAI has hired David Dugan, a longtime ads leader at Meta, as the AI firm’s vice president and head of global ads solutions, a move that signals a more deliberate push into building out its ads business as it looks to scale revenue beyond subscriptions.

Dugan, who spent more than a decade at Meta, most recently as vice president of Meta’s global clients and agencies division, announced the move in a LinkedIn post. He will report to Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Framing the opportunity, Dugan pointed to the scale and sensitivity of advertising inside ChatGPT. “This is a brand new model that’s going to re-shape the industry” he wrote, adding that the ads experience will be “governed by clear principles” and designed to be additive rather than disruptive. Early efforts will center on ad solutions within ChatGPT’s consumer product, which is currently in alpha testing.

The hire lands as OpenAI quietly assembles the infrastructure for an ads business. The company has been building out its adtech stack, including an ads manager, as previously reported by ADWEEK. Holding companies like Omnicom, WPP, and Dentsu are already lining up to test inventory on ChatGPT, which the company says has more than 900 million weekly active users. Early brand partners—including AppLovin, WIRED, and Best Buy—have begun running ads in pilot programs.

Those placements don’t come cheap. OpenAI has asked for a minimum commitment of $200,000 from brands looking to run ads inside ChatGPT, ADWEEK previously reported. The company has also emphasized that ads will not influence the chatbot’s responses, and that user conversations won’t be sold to advertisers.

Dugan’s remit is likely to extend beyond product into relationships. He brings with him deep ties across the ad industry—connections that could prove critical as OpenAI attempts to translate early curiosity into sustained media spend.

The hire also follows the appointment of Fidji Simo, the former Facebook executive who now leads OpenAI’s product and business teams as CEO of applications—another signal that the company is pulling seasoned operators from big tech to shape its commercial playbook.

OpenAI directed ADWEEK to Dugan’s LinkedIn post when asked for further comment.

Scripps Bets Big on Women’s Sports for New Live Streaming Channel in Upfront Pitch

The main takeaway:

The E.W. Scripps Company will launch a new 24/7 streaming network in its latest upfront pitch to advertisers. Premiering Tuesday, March 24, the Scripps Sports Network, a free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channel, will start with 100 live events across the year.

The offering allows advertisers to secure premium positions in women’s sports broadcasts, including those from new and emerging leagues.

The biggest announcements:

According to Scripps Chief Revenue Officer Brian Norris, as live sports—and, specifically, women’s live sports—continue to grow and bring impact for advertisers, Scripps Sports Network was a way to bring viewers free live sports without the barriers of a subscription.

“We recognized very quickly that Scripps represented premium in a free environment, and that was an area where we thought that we could grow,” Norris told ADWEEK. “So it wasn’t good enough for us to launch a free sports streaming channel without bringing live sports to the platform. We were not interested in fueling a sports streaming channel with library content.”

State Farm has signed on as a launch partner for Scripps Sports Network, but Scripps is going to market with opportunities across several live sports.

Starting with 100 live events across the year, Scripps Sports Network coverage includes the Professional Women’s Hockey League, with Scripps signed on to broadcast the league’s championship in May; the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Major League Volleyball, the Pro Cheer League, Athlos NYC, National Arena League (NAL), and The Scripps National Spelling Bee.

In addition to live sports and events, the FAST channel will include 100 hours of encore WNBA; new programming, including an in-depth conversation series hosted by sports broadcaster Suzy Kolber; and acquired programming, such as Cold as Balls, which features comedian Kevin Hart interviewing athletes and sports personalities from ice-cold tubs.

Scripps will continue to have its dedicated sports nights on ION, with the WNBA on Fridays and the NWSL on Saturdays. Meanwhile, Scripps Sports Network will have a mix of original live sports as well as simulcasts and re-airs from ION and Scripps’ other networks.

The Scripps Sports Network will be available on several platforms and devices, including The Roku Channel, LG Channels, Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Fire TV Channels, Google TV Freeplay, Xumo, TCL TV+, TCL Channel, Plex, Local Now, and Tablo.

Why it matters:

Scripps has been a major investor in women’s sports for years, with Scripps Sports holding partnerships with the WNBA, the NWSL, and PWHL, as well as a number of teams, including WNBA Champions the Las Vegas Aces and the NWSL’s Denver Summit FC.

The addition of a FAST channel with live sports gives the company another avenue into new and emerging leagues, allowing advertisers to get in on the ground floor.

“When we bring emerging sports or sports that have just never been aired on national platforms, it creates an opportunity for there to be no incumbency from a sponsorship standpoint, so every sponsorship position, when we bring a new sport to our platform, is largely open,” Norris said. “That creates opportunities for us to be innovative, flexible, and really build sponsorships that are tied to advertiser KPIs and actually deliver real outcomes.”

The news comes shortly after WPP Media issued its “Women’s Sports Playbook,” which included several findings about the impact of advertising in women’s sports, including a 79% year-over-year increase in ad impressions for women’s sports and 20% higher engagement with ads than on non-sports broadcast and cable.

Scripps showcases its upfront presentation on Wednesday, March 25, at 5:30 p.m. ET at the Barclays Center.

NCAA Women’s Tournament Ads ‘Well Sold’ With Record $1.5 Million for 30-Second Spot

The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is putting up big numbers.

Ahead of the first round of the women’s tournament on Friday, Disney told ADWEEK that the ad inventory is “well sold,” but there are still some opportunities for advertisers to get involved. This year’s Championship Game, which airs April 5 on ABC, achieved ad rates of $1 million or more for the second year in a row, with the company hitting a new unit high, as at least one 30-second spot went for $1.5 million.

Danielle Brown, svp of sports brand solutions at Disney Advertising, told ADWEEK that pricing for the tournament, which will air across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, ABC, and streaming, was up double digits percent-wise, crediting the increasing demand, inventory scarcity, and the audience growth as leading to the ad sales achievements.

“We sell a lot of it in the upfront, so when you think about it, if there’s only a last few remaining units left, people are willing to put the money behind it to be a part of that momentous occasion,” Brown said.

Regarding revenue, Brown said the women’s college basketball regular season was up 72% from two years ago, and this year’s tournament was up 134% from the same period.

Brands getting in the game

The 2026 tournament has 151 unique advertisers—84 returning—across 66 total categories. The top categories include credit card and banking, finance and insurance, tech, telco, soft drinks, CPG, travel and leisure, auto, and QSR, according to Brown.

Overall, ESPN has 20 unique sponsors, with Capital One as the presenting sponsor. Intuit TurboTax is a sponsor for the First Four, first round, and second round; Coca-Cola is a sponsor of the Sweet 16; and AT&T is a sponsor for the Elite Eight and Final Four.

Brown noted that ESPN will also lean into streaming, social, and creators during the tournament. Fans can get personalized content feeds through the ESPN app, and creators such as Katie Feeney, who signed a deal with the network last year, will also be involved in content creation.

“[Katie Feeney] is going to be on site at the Final Four and the Championship Game, doing the first-ever creator cam for college basketball,” Brown said. “So she’s going to pick up the sights and sounds of the game.”

In addition, the exec said streaming and programmatic have been an important part of getting advertisers involved in ESPN’s women’s sports offerings. According to Brown, Disney has around 500 advertisers across women’s sports and has been adding about 100 advertisers per year over the past two years.

“A lot of it also has to do with the access points, in terms of advertisers of all sizes being able to access women’s college basketball through ESPN, and they can transact in any way they want, whether that’s a direct deal through automation—because we do have a lot of games across the season on streaming—in addition to our linear networks,” Brown said.

Driving growth

The ad sales news comes shortly after WPP Media released its new Women’s Sports Playbook report, which included several statistics about the impact of women’s sports advertising, including a 79% year-over-year increase in ad impressions for women’s sports and 20% higher engagement with ads than on non-sports broadcast and cable.

According to the report, investment in women’s sports is estimated to be up nearly 70% year-over-year, with the total spend reaching about $127 million.

“The audience is really big in terms of our conversations in the marketplace, and then we’re seeing that effectiveness on the backend,” Brown said. “We’re seeing these games drive search results and drive impact and conversion.”

X is imploring advertisers who’ve abandoned the platform to return, promising some a sweetheart deal of up to $200,000 in extra value, according to a leaked pitch deck viewed by ADWEEK.

On one slide, presented to an ad agency with many clients that have not invested in the platform for a number of months, X suggested it would toss in 50% of added value for every dollar spent, up to $200,000 per advertiser.

Details of what constitutes “added value”—whether discounts, free ad credits, rebates, or something else entirely—were unspecified.

The incentive was framed as a “return-to-platform incentive” in the slide.

The incentive structure is the same as a promotion X ran last year for Omnicom specifically, though the company’s pitch to the holding company also included additional financial incentives like 15% in media credits for spending on X’s inventory via auction, excluding revenue-sharing products.

The platform ad revenues were roughly halved after Elon Musk’s $44 billion takeover in 2022. Last year, it brought in about $1.25 billion compared to 2021’s $2.43 billion from ads, per Emarketer estimates. Many advertisers dialed back their investments or exited the platform altogether over brand safety concerns posed by X’s lax approach to content moderation and misinformation under Musk’s leadership.

More than 20 slides of the leaked deck were dedicated to promoting X’s brand safety credentials, transparency practices, and built-in controls for advertisers that help them avoid “sensitive content.”

In one slide, X explained how Grok—the AI chatbot operated by X’s parent company xAI and integrated natively into X—is being deployed to aid brand safety. “ALL (sic) posts on X are reviewed by xAI’s Frontier model Grok for Brand Suitability,” it read. It also claimed that profile ads will only show up on X profiles that have been “fully vetted by Grok, which evaluates all compliance with X’s Rules and policies and Brand Suitability.”

The push aligns with a broader pattern for X, which is increasingly positioning Grok as a cornerstone of its brand safety practice, as reported by ADWEEK earlier this month. The push arrives just weeks after Grok users filled X with a deluge of nonconsensual sexualized deepfakes of real users—a scandal that has prompted a handful of regulatory investigations and lawsuits.

In the slides, X also pitched the platform as an ideal advertising environment for high engagement and high performance. It purported to be “#1 for ad attentiveness,” and said X users are 45% more likely to buy products they’ve seen advertised on X compared to non-X users, according to GWI figures from Q2 of 2024 through Q1 of 2025.

The company also claimed that, per X internal data from August 2 to Dec 7, 2025, the platform observed a 140% lift in click-through rates, a 43% increase in conversion rates, and a 37% increase in sales.

Ad performance—and ad-linked sales in particular—has been a fixation of Musk’s as the company looks to recover ad revenues. In February of 2023, Musk wrote in a post: “Almost nobody buys anything on Twitter, but almost everyone on Instagram does.”

As recently as this month, Musk posted an interactive survey on X asking users if they’d ever made a purchase based on an ad they’d seen on the platform. Of some 1.6 million responses, 88% they had not.

X did not provide an on-the-record comment by press time.

ABC Halts The Bachelorette After Taylor Frankie Paul Allegations and Leaked Video

ABC is pulling the new season of The Bachelorette from the schedule.

Following allegations of domestic violence against this season’s star, Secret Lives of Mormon Wives personality Taylor Frankie Paul, as well as a leaked video of an incident between Frankie Paul and her ex, Dakota Mortensen, from 2023, ABC isn’t moving forward with the new season, at least for now.

The show was set to premiere on Sunday, March 22.

“In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family,” a Disney Entertainment Television spokesperson told ADWEEK in a statement.

The network didn’t say if the show would return.

In light of the allegations and the leaked video, NBC reportedly canceled Frankie Paul’s Wednesday appearance on The Tonight Show, and filming for Season 5 of the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has been paused. In addition, Cinnabon pulled out of partnerships for the new season of The Bachelorette.

As artificial intelligence pushes brands to bring more of the creative processes in-house, agency talent is feeling the existential pressure on their jobs—and many are leaving storied organizations to chart their own paths.

According to new survey data fielded by NewtonX for ADWEEK, 32% of brands expect to handle nearly all creative in-house within 12 months, while another 23% expect to bring at least half of their creative work in-house in that timeframe.

Meanwhile, more than half (54%) of agency leaders surveyed said they’re somewhat or very likely to start their own firm within the next two years.

These trends are not unrelated.

14 Things I Learned at SXSW

This story was originally published in On Background with Mark Stenberg, a free, weekly newsletter that explores the key themes shaping the media industry. You can sign up for it here.

This past week, I flew to Austin to attend South by Southwest, the annual festival now owned by PMC that combines networking and thought leadership with live music and two-stepping.

The distributed nature of the conference, where events were split between a handful of disparate areas, meant that folks in different industries or with different interests likely had radically different experiences.

I spent most of my time speaking with executives in the media and entertainment spaces, chatting mostly about advertising, AI, podcasting, and live-streaming. Below are 14 things I learned across the five-day event.

1. Podcasting is primed for a gold rush

When Netflix acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast The Ringer and Barstool podcasts on its platform in December, the entire media ecosystem took note. Compared to traditional film and television projects, podcasts are far cheaper to produce, and many of them come with preexisting fanbases.

If the experiment is a success, other streaming platforms could likely follow suit, snapping up popular series, adapting them to screen, and ushering in a second podcasting gold rush—the first such boom having come in 2020, when Spotify dropped north of a billion dollars acquiring top talent.

A few enterprising platforms have already begun testing the waters.

.newsletter-subscription-form-wrapper p:empty{ display: none !important } .newsletter-subscription-form-wrapper button br{ display: none !important }

Matt Starker, the CEO of Audiochuck, walked me through the deal his company signed in October with Tubi and Red Seat Ventures to adapt several of its series into shows, with the aim of translating its true crime hits into full-fledged shows. Similarly, vice president of sales at Crooked Media Giancarlo Bizzarro explained why his company penned a deal just last month with MSNBC, part of an effort from the linear network to age down its audience. And Karen Paek, the vice president of marketing at the streaming service Viki, told me her team was scouting out potential fits.

In the coming months, provided these early tests yield positive results, do not be surprised if a wave of popular podcast networks sign deals with streamers. The big question is whether they would accept the same exclusivity clause that Netflix asked of The Ringer and Barstool. Starker and Bizzarro both told me that reach and awareness are their primary goals, so such a deal would only make sense if the upfront payment were impossible to refuse.

2. Sports leagues ought to be media companies

A few months ago I spoke with Brian Szejka, formerly the publisher at Penske Media, who had taken a new role as the chief revenue officer at NBA Take-Two Media, a joint venture between the NBA and the video game company Take-Two.

In a follow-up conversation, Szejka and I discussed the space more broadly, but what really captured my attention was his claim that sports leagues have missed an opportunity: acting as media companies. So far, according to Szejka, only the NBA has begun to use its access to create content that tells stories about its players that extend beyond their lives as athletes, making their competitive set more similar to Complex or Uninterrupted than the NFL Network.

Take-Two sees that white space as its primary aim, creating video series with former players, launching social channels like NBAResDev, and using athletes’ love for video games to deepen gamers’ relationships with their favorite teams. The idea struck me as a no-brainer, especially given the astronomical popularity of sports and the production infrastructure they already have. I would be surprised if we did not see more of this in the future!

3. Apple Podcast’s HLS update is bigger than video

I thought I understood the importance of Apple Podcast’s HLS update, but the announcement last month goes deeper than just allowing podcasters to publish video versions of their shows alongside the audio versions.

According to Bryan Barletta, the cofounder of Sounds Profitable, the real unlock is that following this update, the video remains hosted by your podcast host—not the podcast platform or server.

So far, this only works for four different podcast hosting providers—Acast, ART19, Simplecast, and Omny Studio—but it has dramatic implications for ownership and ad monetization, according to Barletta.

This means that it is up to the podcasts, and their hosting companies, how they monetize their shows, rather than just leaving it up to Spotify or YouTube. The topic can get a bit technical, but Barletta explains it well here.

“So when the platform that started it all reinforces to podcasters that the center of their universe should be their hosting platform, along with supporting their rights to manage their own distribution and advertising flow, it’s a big deal,” he writes.

4. Brew Media Group is looking for more acquisitions

In 2015 we got Morning Brew, in 2024 it became Morning Brew Inc., and on March 3 Brew Media Group joined the world. The media firm launched the holding company earlier this month after it acquired the real estate events company Bisnow.

While Brew Media Group CEO Robert Dippel declined to share specifics on the tie-up, he reiterated that Bisnow is a 165-person company and profitable. But with Bisnow now under its ownership, the company realized it made sense to launch an umbrella organization to house a portfolio that was growing increasingly diverse.

More interesting still: Dippel tells me that MBG is actively looking for new acquisitions. Something must be in the water at the Axel Springer headquarters, as the German media company, which owns Brew Media, just dropped $765 million on The Telegraph earlier this month.

5. Breaking and Entering and Growing

The social-first creator duo Breaking and Entering were omnipresent at SXSW, a feat made more feasible by the fact that their team has grown from a lean two to a sprightly five, according to cofounder Geno Schellenberger.

The group, which just launched its thrice weekly live-stream, was on the ground for the first time alongside its management firm Smooth Media, another friend of the newsletter.

6. With Scout, Yahoo sits across the answer engine ecosystem

On Sunday morning, I watched Feed Me founder Emily Sundberg interview Yahoo CEO Jim Lanzone about Scout, a new answer engine from Yahoo.

Beyond the broader resurgence of Yahoo, which Lanzone claims is profitable and growing, what I find most interesting about the company is its unique position in the advertising and media sector.

It is a prolific publisher, thanks to properties like Yahoo Finance and Sports, but it is also in the ad-tech game, thanks to its demand-side platform Yahoo DSP. It is also an aggregator of other publishers’ content, and now, with the launch of Scout, it has re-entered the search game.

Intriguingly, it is also part of the launch group for Microsoft’s content marketplace, meaning it will nominally pay the publishers whose data it uses to power Scout. But because it is also a publisher, it will also be paid by answer engines when it provides them content.

I cannot think of any other media company that is publisher, aggregator, demand-side platform, and answer engine all in one.

7. The era of experiential spectacle, even at South by Southwest, is over

There were fewer activations at this SXSW, and the ones that were there were somewhat lackluster. (The ADWEEK team ranked the available pop-ups, giving them between one and five tacos, here.)

According to a panel of marketers speaking at ADWEEK House, this is not necessarily a reflection on SXSW itself, but rather a new approach to experiential, driven by shifts in digital technology and consumer preference.

I thought it was fascinating to hear about how experiential marketing has to have a digital component nowadays—how a physical experience gets translated into social content—but also how that digital element must contend with a growing fatigue related to social platforms, which hardly deserve that moniker anymore.

I am generally skeptical of people who predict a decline in digital consumption or screentime, but if the appeal of events is getting people together in person, then maybe a pop-up creates a more compelling memory if it gets you to put your phone away.

8. Waymos were everywhere. They make the death of driving feel plausible

Austin is one of the few cities in the country with Waymos, and while I was there they felt ubiquitous. Maxell Tani at Semafor remarked that they really do make something that felt unthinkable for a long time—the end of driving—feel quite inevitable.

9. Big technology companies were conspicuously absent

The ubiquity of Waymo was in direct contrast to the conspicuous absence of any of the other big technology companies. None of the hyperscalers had any activations, advertising, or any attendees that I could see.

This is in part because many technology companies now prefer simply to host their own events to promote their new products, an opportunity that allows them to craft the narrative as they see fit and invite only their most ardent boosters.

Another reason is that, if SXSW used to be where consumer technology companies went to break out, all of the most important AI companies of the day belong to—or have received significant investment from—the incumbents.

As such, there is no need for guerilla marketing or a launch event; these companies came into the world fully formed and financed, bypassing the need to make use of SXSW as a marketing machine.

10. The next generation of directors will come from YouTube

I hosted a panel at ADWEEK House exploring how YouTube creators are increasingly bypassing the traditional movie production and distribution channels.

The timing could not have been more poignant, given that the YouTuber Markiplier has brought in more than $21 million on his self-financed film Iron Lung, which debuted in February. The film, which cost $3 million, has been a windfall for its creator, whose real name is Mark Fischback, and is a testament to the growing power of creators in the film space.

One of the panelists involved in the session was Aidan Gallagher, a YouTuber with a prolific following who makes content while exploring the country and living out of his van. Gallagher told me that he has written and filmed his first feature length film and is now just working to finance its distribution.

As technology makes film production simpler than ever, and distribution networks like YouTube amplify its reach, I have to imagine the next few years will see the emergence of a new wave of independent filmmakers who take their own route to auteurship.

11. The growth of the Guardian has gone overlooked

The Guardian ventured to Austin to promote its forthcoming daily show, Stateside with Kai and Carter, giving me an opportunity to catch up with its chief advertising officer Sara Badler and its head of North American marketing Vanessa Fontanez Pauley.

There, they and others impressed upon me the growth The Guardian has seen, as its newsroom continues to expand, its audience continues to grow, and it manages to do both profitably and without a traditional paywall. The publisher has a distinctly partisan perspective, something it touts as an advantage, and its new video podcast aims to own the emerging white space of daily video news products.

I wonder if any of this momentum has come as a result of the readership exodus at The Washington Post, which abandoned its resistance mindset and has seen its subscribership nosedive.

12. Chess.com is a sleeping giant

I mean this as a compliment, but Chess.com reminds me of Weather.com in that both are widely used but rarely considered.

While at a Vox Media party Sunday night, I spoke with Chess.com cofounder Danny Rensch about the success of the brand. Rensch, whose life story is more fascinating than The Queen’s Gambit, claims the sport is in the midst of a cultural resurgence, and the evidence is compelling.

It has become a wildly popular source of live-stream content, a devoted app user base, and counts more celebrity endorsements than you would imagine. (I suggested to Rensch that they make a show unmasking famous celebrities as closet chess devotees. I knew Victor Wembenyama and Gus Wenner were in the fan club, but I had no clue about the Wu-Tang Clan fandom.)

Perhaps there could be a board-game roll-up in the future? Only Chess.com knows its next move …

13. Vox Media is a creator collective

The most chic party of the weekend was undoubtedly the one hosted by Vox Media, which packed a room with media executives and podcast talent so tightly that I could barely bring my canapes to my mouth.

Of course, Vox Media is reportedly looking to spin off its podcast network, so it makes sense that the company used the party to fete its talent, including folks like Kara Swisher, Esther Perel, and Astead Herndon. Still, such a spinoff is more complicated than it might sound on paper, and how CEO Jim Bankoff structures such a deal will be of immense interest to would-be buyers.

But the company must be patting itself on the back for making its name nearly synonymous with podcast, a once-fledgling format that is now the center of the content ecosystem.

14. Media works best as a wrapper

As media analyst Brian Morrisey recently noted, the most stable media companies are those for whom media is only the entryway to a different business with better economics.

Morrisey and I originally discussed this thesis when talking about Outside Inc., but I have thought about it a number of times since then. It is true with Hearst, Dow Jones, The New York Times, Semafor, and Time, and I imagine such logic will only extend further in the coming years.

This came up in an on-stage conversation with Hallmark senior vice president of marketing Danielle Mullin, who discussed how Hallmark+ is just one part of a broader Hallmark ecosystem. Cory Corrine, now running The Intersect, told me half-jokingly earlier this year that good editorial is a kind of brand marketing.

When taken together, these ideas suggest a blueprint for a kind of media company whose editorial is primarily understood as a brand-building device, attracting audiences through media to engage with more lucrative businesses. It might seem less sexy, but it also seems far more durable.

Talking Heds

Dow Jones Doubles Down (SCOOP): On Friday, the parent company of The Wall Street Journal, Marketwatch, and Barron’s added two senior hires: Andrew Essex as its brand director in residence and Delwyn Gray as head of events, according to an internal memo I obtained. Essex, notably, was the founding CEO of the renowned ad agency Droga5. His addition marks the third CEO in the last 18 months, alongside former Fortune executive Alan Murray and former Bloomberg Media CEO Scott Havens, to join the Dow Jones executive team. The hires reflect the increasingly deep bench of talent joining the company, which last week announced its intention to generate $1 billion in EBITDA within five years.

A Complex Acquihire (Exclusive): The media brand Complex has hired Adam Saleh, founder of the startup Presq, to join the company in the role of creative technologist. At Presq, Saleh has worked to dramatically reduce the time it takes to create products, such as clothing and collectibles, through a combination of 3D printing and streamlined production techniques. Complex, which was acquired from BuzzFeed by the live-shopping platform NTRK for $108 million in February 2024, has prioritized commerce more than perhaps any other modern publisher, a byproduct of its focus on the streetwear space. According to its chief creative officer Mark Eckō, roughly 75% of Complex’s commerce business comes from producing exclusive merchandise and collectibles.

Trade Desk Dereliction: Just one month after the holding companies Dentsu and WPP stopped using The Trade Desk’s OpenPath product, the French holding company Publicis has begun advising its clients to stop working with the demand-side platform. According to leaked documents obtained by my colleague Kendra Barnett, Publicis explained that The Trade Desk failed an audit conducted by a third-party consultant. A Publicis spokesperson confirmed the validity of the memo, while a spokesperson for The Trade Desk said that “Any notion that TTD failed an audit is not true.”

Social Media Week Returns: In just a few weeks, ADWEEK will once again be hosting Social Media Week, by far the coolest event in our portfolio and one whose insights can legitimately help make or break your brand. I will be on-site, moderating panels and trying not to look washed, and would love to see you there. So join ADWEEK, on April 14 – 16 in New York, to tap into the cutting-edge tactics powering social for the top brands, media outlets, agencies, and creators in the world. Click here to learn more.

Quote/Unquote

Dan Clancey is the chief executive of the live-streaming platform Twitch, a platform whose most prominent creators have lately burst from the fringes of content creation into the center of mainstream conversation.

As I wrote about last month, the undeniable humanity of live-stream content has proven a newfound source of appeal as social media feeds increasingly fill with artificial content. Similarly, the predominance of video among social media platforms has made Twitch, whose live-streams produce a vast quantity of raw video materiel, a natural starting point for many creators whose end product is video-based anyway.

I spoke with Clancey at South by Southwest, where we discussed the relationship between Twitch and YouTube, the atomization of content creation, and why publishers have struggled with the format in the past.

This interview has been edited.

Mark Stenberg: Between TBPN, Breaking and Entering, Clavicular, iShowSpeed, and others, it feels like live-stream—not a new content format—is having a bit of a breakout moment. Why do you think that is?

Dan Clancey: I think social media has become anti-social. It’s user-generated media, but it lacks the social component that it once had. If the platforms used to connect people, now they just entertain them, and I think people are left wanting. They want a connection with a creator, with a community, and they get that with Twitch.

Mark: Publishers have experimented with live-streaming before—two years ago, I chronicled the misadventures of outlets like Rolling Stone, BuzzFeed, and Vice on the platform. Do you think publishers belong on Twitch, and if so, what went wrong on those earlier efforts?

Dan: Two things work really well on Twitch. First is community: If you are not connecting with someone horizontally, why would you be there rather than just watch the content asynchronously? To get that, you have to be very specific in your focus, and a lot of publishers’ content was too heterogeneous. With Rolling Stone, no one is a fan of all genres of music, so different people tuned in for different artists and the community never took root. Second, people only want to be there in the moment if their participation affects the content. A concert is not influenced by you watching it. If you are going to adjust your schedule to accommodate a piece of content, your presence has to influence the content.

Mark: What is Twitch’s relationship to YouTube?

Dan: Twitch and YouTube are symbiotic, but our website is designed around live content. We don’t keep video content on a long-term basis because our site isn’t optimized for that, but similarly YouTube is not optimized for live-streaming. We understand that our magic is the community experience.

Mark: Are you worried that one day YouTube will wake up and decide to eat the live-stream market?

Dan: They have tried—so have Microsoft and Facebook. Back around 2020, those companies had huge budgets to break into the market and overpaid our creators to join their platforms. Then, when the money ran out, the creators came back. Now Microsoft and Facebook have shuttered their live experiences, and YouTube Live is only really appealing for creators who go live every once in a while. People find our content on YouTube and TikTok, but then they come to us for the live stuff.

Mark: The macro trend in content creation seems to be atomization: To create compelling video, first it took a company, then it took a team, now it takes an individual. Is this good for the quality and health of the medium in the long run?Dan: This is the attention economy. People will adapt and adjust. Organizations can participate in this space—Universal Music has a Twitch channel—but they can’t do it the way they used to.

EXCLUSIVE: Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt Butts Heads With Former FTC CTO Over AI Regulation

In a heated discussion with leading AI scholars Tuesday evening, Eric Schmidt, the American businessman who held the top post at Google from 2001 to 2011, argued that AI systems can develop unexpected behaviors that limit the extent to which companies like Google can implement preemptive safety and governance mechanisms into their products.

A central “problem” with regulating frontier AI models, is that, sometimes, “a new feature emerges in these systems that is not tested, testable,” Schmidt said onstage at the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate, moderated by physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson in Manhattan.

“We can stop [the emergence of new features or behaviors], and therefore stop all progress, by law, by banning larger models,” he said, “but as long as you have this new emergent power, you have deep reasoning, deep capabilities, and they will make mistakes. You have to be tolerant.”

Schmidt—who also served as chairman of Google’s parent Alphabet from 2015 and 2017 and advised Alphabet for three years after that—supported the 2014 acquisition of DeepMind, the unit that now houses Google’s most cutting-edge AI research.

Schmidt said that AI developers, like Google and others “should be held accountable” if they’re found in violation of the law, but emphasized that AI developers frequently have to ship AI products and retroactively correct bad behaviors they didn’t predict as the models evolve.

“I went through this when I was at Google, in earlier versions of [Google’s AI] technology, where the system would actually do something that was wrong, and we fixed it. And we fixed it as fast as we could, because we had to, because it was the right thing to do,” he said.

Google did not respond with an on-the-record statement by press time.

Schmidt was challenged by Latanya Sweeney, a professor of government and technology at Harvard and the former chief technology officer at the Federal Trade Commission, who cast doubt on the suggestion that AI leaders would happily comply with regulations. She said that leading tech companies have proven time and again to ignore key regulations or attempt to bend the law to their commercial interests.

Sweeney is not off base. Just last year, U.S. federal judges found Google guilty of operating not one but two illegal monopolies—one in adtech and one in online search. The decisions came six years after Meta, then Facebook, was forced to cough up $5 billion to the FTC and modify its business practices after it was found to have mishandled reams of user data in the now infamous Cambridge Analytica scandal.

“Technology just ignores [laws] and rewrites them. That’s true in social media. It’s true in AI as well,” Sweeney said to Schmidt. “We already have laws [that] address issues of bias, consumer protection, and so forth. None of those are enforced online.”

Sweeney suggested that mitigating the risks associated with AI, including algorithmic harms and biases encoded into AI systems from their training data, requires more foundational changes rather than ex-post-facto fixes.

“There are questions about existential harms in the future, but there are a lot of harms happening right now. And it doesn’t have to be that way….It depends on who this AI is servicing, and in particular, the design of the technology—the decisions made in that design is really determining what our values will be,” she said.

Schmidt pushed back on the implication that all harms could be preempted with better design and training, arguing that leading AI programs are not simple machinery but complex, non-linear systems that often develop unforeseen capabilities. But he agreed with Sweeney’s assertion that Silicon Valley leaders have at times “rushed” products to market, adding, “They’ve found all sorts of problems, and then they’re busy correcting them. I think that’s the cycle, and it’s very hard.”

Luckily, he said, AI developers have evaluation cards and safety testing teams in place to mitigate as much risk as possible in advance.

But these measures are insufficient for protecting humanity, according to another panelist, Nate Soares. Soares is president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute in Berkeley, California and co-author of If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies, a 2025 book on the existential risks posed by AI.

In leading AI labs, the primary focus areas for safety and governance today are interpretability research, or “trying to figure out what’s going on inside the AIs’ heads,” and model evaluation cards, “which are trying to figure out how dangerous the AIs are,” as Soares explained.

He likened these efforts to a comically inadequate attempt to curtail nuclear disasters. “If someone was making a nuclear power plant in your hometown, and you went to them and you said, ‘Hey, I hear that this uranium stuff can have lots of energy benefits, but also can melt down when things go badly. What have you guys got that makes you think you’re going to get the benefits and not the pitfalls?’ If the engineers say—‘Oh yeah, we’ve got two crack teams working on this; the first team is trying to figure out what the heck is going on inside, and the second team is trying to measure whether it’s currently exploding’—that’s not a good sign.”

Soares expressed urgent concern about the future of AI for the same reason Schmidt found the technology to be too difficult to govern: because frontier AI models tend to act in ways their makers didn’t explicitly design or even anticipate.

Schmidt argued that the benefits of AI will ultimately outweigh the risks, disagreeing with arguments made by Sweeney, Soares, and other academics onstage.

“The companies that are doing this work are well aware of the dangers, and I know this because I work with them on this, and we spend an awful lot of time talking about them,” Schmidt said. “We can talk about some of them, but that is not to take away from the enormous benefit of these technologies.”

Schmidt, deGrasse, Sweeney, and Soares were joined onstage by Kate Crawford, a professor of AI at the University of Southern California, Chris Callison-Burch, a University of Pennsylvania computer science professor, and Cindy Rush, a statistician who teaches at Columbia University.
