How YouTube Is Taking Super Bowl Ads Beyond a 30-Second Play

In a year when brands are shelling out $10 million for 30-second Super Bowl ads, the real key to winning the night isn’t just about being in the Big Game. It’s about surrounding it.

With over 40 billion hours of sports content consumed annually on YouTube globally, the platform, which regularly leads Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge with around 13% of the market, is increasingly becoming a key play for brands around live sports tentpoles, including Super Bowl Sunday.

By utilizing the platform, advertisers are building value beyond in-game ad units, according to Sean Downey, president, Americas and global partners, Google.

“For the Super Bowl, in particular, we’ve been really focused on having YouTube and creators surround the NFL and take advantage of that really huge cultural moment,” Downey told ADWEEK.

YouTube has made live sports a priority in its upfront conversations, with advertisers looking to align themselves with cultural moments and take advantage of the platform’s premier sponsorship offerings. According to Downey, some of those sponsorships are coming to fruition now around the Super Bowl.

For advertisers with a Big Game spot, Downey noted that YouTube’s AdBlitz program, which includes a hub for Super Bowl advertisements, can significantly extend a brand’s reach. The exec points to a Comscore AdBlitz Meta Analysis from the day of the Super Bowl, which shows that 45% of total unique viewers of AdBlitz participant campaigns saw an ad on YouTube only. And viewers are also increasingly watching those ads on the big screen.

“The viewership shifted on YouTube dramatically. There are over a billion hours watched annually in the living room, so they’re not just getting the reach of the game in the moment,” Downey said.

According to Downey, the platform’s strength lies in expanding reach and embedding brands with creators.

For instance, after its 2025 creator flag football game drew 6 million viewers, YouTube is back hosting another pre-Super Bowl flag football game on Feb. 7, with key creators and stars such as Druski, J Balvin, and Cam Newton set to participate. Meanwhile, P&G’s Old Spice is the premier sponsor, showcasing a new campaign with custom integrations, graphics, ads, and live activations.

Though not the premier sponsor, other NFL advertisers are also included in packages around the creator game, according to Downey, which include mastheads that “basically give you the reach of a Super Bowl ad every day.”

Of course, the real play around YouTube is getting in with the creators, who can bring brands organically into the conversation with their subscribers. And for this year’s Big Game, YouTube has more creators than ever in town, with the company tapping into their programming niches and connecting them with advertisers.

“If we want to put someone around Druski or Jason Kelce, we know the packaging and the advertisers that are looking for those folks in particular,” Downey said. “And we really move that around how we think about matching creators to brands over time.”

And if you’re looking for Jason Kelce, you can also find him starring alongside his wife, Kylie Kelce, in YouTube TV’s pre-game ad, as the platform surrounds the Super Bowl itself. Meanwhile, though YouTube doesn’t technically have an ad in the game, its creators starring in ads for other brands will inevitably drive more traffic to the platform.

Moving forward into the upfront season, Downey noted that YouTube is looking to take its current strategies to new, more granular levels. For instance, YouTube is looking to leverage its sponsorships with more custom integrations and get advertisers closer to the content in more robust packages with creators who align with their brands. Meanwhile, the platform is also utilizing AI-powered campaigns to help brands find new customers and take a full-funnel approach.

Ultimately, it’s about bringing brands closer to content and having creators promote brand partnerships that align with their values, rather than just aligning with their checkbook.

“Sports matter to a lot of people. So if you’re embedded into it, and you’re part of the conversation, you’re part of that niche, you do better, and I think that’s what brands see,” Downey said. “They’re always going to do the reach, because you’ve got to have a certain amount of it, but deep community, authentic communication, and resonance with fans is what really matters.”

EXCLUSIVE: 6AM City Is Swapping Reporters for AI in Markets It Can’t Afford

After nearly a decade of rapid expansion, the newsletter-based local publisher 6AM City is shrinking its human-led footprint in an effort to finally cross a milestone it has chased for years: profitability.

In 2025, the company reduced the number of its “core markets”—cities staffed by full-time editors and salespeople—from roughly 30 to 19, according to chief operating officer and cofounder Ryan Heafy.

The retreat also coincided with two rounds of layoffs, which eliminated around 35 jobs—roughly a third of its total headcount, which now stands at around 60. The pullback, along with a broader corporate restructuring, is aimed at lowering costs and stabilizing the business as 6AM marks its 10-year anniversary in February.

EXCLUSIVE: Scope3 Cuts Engineering and Sales Staff in Second Round of Layoffs in 5 Months

Scope3, the adtech emissions quantifier-turned agentic media startup helmed by programmatic pioneer Brian O’Kelley is axing more of its staff, just five months after its last round of layoffs.

Scope3 declined to confirm the exact number of laid off staffers. But the company confirmed in a statement that it made “further adjustments” to its “commercial and engineering teams to align with market demand.”

One impacted employee said they learned they were losing their job on a brief call with their manager last week. They said the news came as a surprise.

As of late 2024, the adtech company employed over 100 staffers globally, according to a blog post by O’Kelley, but that number was published prior to layoffs last year.

Two former Scope3 employees, speaking on condition of anonymity, told ADWEEK that a handful of their former colleagues left the company recently of their own accord as well.

Scope3’s spokesperson said, “We remain focused on building the agent-to-agent media infrastructure that brands need as the industry transforms.”

The company, which launched four years ago with the aim of quantifying carbon emissions across adtech supply chains, made a major pivot in 2025, with O’Kelley endorsing a new vision focused on aiding the industry’s shift to agent-to-agent media transactions.

Last spring, Scope3 launched agentic products designed for automating brand safety and suitability. O’Kelley has also helmed a nascent effort to standardize agentic media buying and selling with Ad Context Protocol, or AdCP, which has gained support from industry players including Yahoo, PubMatic, and Magnite—though adoption is not yet widespread.

YouTube TV’s ‘Meh’ Super Bowl Warm Up Spot Digs Directly at Competitors

YouTube is courting sports fans over to its subscription streaming service offering ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl LX game with a star-studded ad that positions its competitors as “just meh.”

In the 60-second ad, Jason and Kylie Kelce ponder how the world would be if people settled for “just meh.” Clips show a couple ordering from a “meh-nu” in a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, David Blaine performing a “meh-gic” trick, Sarah Hughes executing an unexceptional figure-skating jump, and Christian McCaffrey sporting a large belly.

Titled “Don’t Settle for Meh,” the spot is a brazen attempt to market YouTube TV as a more premium offering than traditional live TV services in the run up to a major month of sports.

Angela Courtin, vice president of entertainment and sports at YouTube Marketing, said in a statement: “Teaming up with this incredible line up of talent allows us to highlight exactly why YouTube is the destination for fans to watch and engage with the biggest cultural moments around the world.”

The campaign will run online and on broadcast ahead of the Super Bowl LX, but not during the game.

YouTube TV is streaming the upcoming game as part of a long-term distribution agreement with NBCUniversal, which holds the exclusive broadcast rights for Super Bowl LX.

The spot will also run during the Winter Olympics, taking place Feb. 6 through Feb. 22.

Parent company Google revealed its Super Bowl advertising plans on Thursday (Feb. 5), a 60-second heartfelt spot focused on its AI chatbot, Gemini, similar to last year’s ad. Buthis year, Google will compete for attention with a slew of AI companies, from OpenAI to Anthropic.

Google Bets on ‘Helpful AI’ to Push Gemini Into the Zeitgeist in Super Bowl Ad

Google is kicking off its biggest marketing push for Gemini, its generative AI assistant, in a feel-good Super Bowl ad meant to humanize the tech.

In the 60-second spot, set to air during the third quarter of the Feb. 8 game, a mother helps prepare her young son, Ben, for a big move to a new home with help from Gemini. She asks Gemini to pull up photos of the new house, then drops in a picture of Ben’s current room to show him how his bed, his toys, and even the dog’s bed can fit into his new room. Then, they take a look at the new backyard, and although Mom still won’t let Ben have a trampoline, together they imagine all the possibilities of their new life together with Gemini’s image-generation tools.

The campaign represents Google’s fifth consecutive—and 10th overall—Super Bowl appearance. From the company’s first foray in 2010 with “Parisian Love,”—a love story told through Google searches—the brand has consistently taken an emotional tack to its Super Bowl messaging.

“Google is a product company, but really, we believe in products that help people,” said Marvin Chow, vp of consumer and AI marketing at Google. “We believe in that storytelling of connecting the benefit of a product to a value in someone’s life.”

The core idea of this year’s ad, “New Home,” is that Google is becoming more helpful than ever. “The platform that we’re developing is this idea of a new kind of help from Google,” Chow said. “We’ve always been the helpful company, but with new advances in technology and AI, the kind of help we can bring people is going to be new and improved. This really starts to set that tone [that] it’s not just another chatbot, but it’s a new kind of help…that we’re going to bring to you.”

This year’s ad, “New Home,” was created by the in-house Google Creative Lab team. Although Google maintains various agency relationships, it made sense to create this ad internally, Chow said, because the Creative Lab has direct insight to product development and research at Google, enabling a more informed depiction of Gemini’s capabilities.

“New Home” is the keystone of an integrated campaign that spans TV, online video, social, out-of-home, and influencer partnerships. Much of the content will appear in the days leading up to the Big Game. Bay Area residents, for example, can expect to see ads for Gemini splashed across billboards and public transportation. Plus, through a partnership with Lyft, Google will offer a $20 ride credit through Feb. 8 for Bay Wheels bikes across the Bay Area. Gemini will also sponsor EA Sports’ Madden Bowl, starring Luke Combs and Teddy Swims, on Feb. 6. On social platforms, the brand will roll out a slate of play-by-play, sports commentary-style videos with announcers showcasing various use cases for Gemini, from trying a new hairstyle to identifying a car’s fuse box.

“We’re definitely going big,” Chow said. The forthcoming showdown between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will take place in Santa Clara, on Google’s “home turf,” Chow noted (Google’s global headquarters is just down the road in Mountain View). “You’ll start to see Gemini all over. It’ll be unmissable.”

In the months leading up to Super Bowl LX, the game’s broadcast host, NBC Sports, sold 30-second spots for upward of $10 million. Though Chow declined to specify Google’s total investment, he said it was “on par” with the brand’s previous Super Bowl buys.

Google sees this moment as the start of a bigger promotional push, with Gemini occupying the pole position of CEO Sundar Pichai’s decade-long ambition to make Google an “AI-first” company (something he first spoke about in April 2016).

“At Google, we talk about [the idea that] a product has to be ready for marketing,” Chow said. “We have a lot of products, and some of them are early-stage, and they’re not quite ready for marketing. Nothing’s perfect, but we’re at that moment where the Super Bowl is the starting point” for a bigger Gemini push.

Gemini is gaining steam on AI leader OpenAI. It now has around 650 million monthly active users, compared with ChatGPT’s 800 million, according to research from European bank BNP Paribas. Gemini’s share of website visits rose to 22.5% in December, up from 17.7% the previous month. The figures far outpace the tool’s 2024 usage numbers.

In the weeks following the Super Bowl, Chow’s team will look to link the “New Home” ad and the surrounding campaign to an uptick in Gemini adoption. Google will also do lift studies and assess changes in consideration, awareness, search trends, and more.

“It is this pivotal moment, and we’re kind of kicking off this Gemini story,” Chow said. “When I look back, I would hope that this is the beginning of that moment where regular people are starting to learn about Gemini and be like, ‘Oh, that’s the helpful AI. That’s the thing that can do this for me.’ That’s where I think that cultural adoption and mindshare of Gemini starts to take off—in this starting moment.”

Outside Interactive Posted Its First Profit—But It’s No longer Just a Media Company

This story was originally published in On Background with Mark Stenberg, a free, weekly newsletter that explores the key themes shaping the media industry. You can sign up for it here.

In February 2021, Robin Thurston raised $150 million to acquire Outside Media, which at the time included two outdoor publishers, a mapping system, and a registration platform.

Five years and dozens of acquisitions later, the company now known as Outside Interactive bears little resemblance to its former namesake.

Part of the identity shift comes from its newfound commercial stability. Last year, the company brought in $125 million in revenue, a 23% year-over-year increase, and generated the first profit in its history.

“We just came off of a very good year,” Thurston said. “Looking at how many of these things have come together, my view is that we are finally seeing the fruits of our labor.”

But more critically, according to Thurston, Outside Interactive is no longer a media company. The distinction is not just a matter of semantics. Under Thurston, an inveterate technology founder with a passion for outdoor sports, the company has undergone a radical, and at times painful, transformation. Outside has retooled almost every element of its business except for the branding.

Whereas it once generated the bulk of its revenue through advertising—70% in February 2021—Outside now brings in 60% of its business from digital subscription and recurring services revenue, according to Thurston. In 2025, digital advertising made up just 40% of its top line.

.newsletter-subscription-form-wrapper p:empty{ display: none !important } .newsletter-subscription-form-wrapper button br{ display: none !important }

The overhaul of its revenue composition has been a yearslong project, driven in equal parts by desperation and desire.

Competing against technology and social media platforms for ad budgets has proven a losing battle for publishers, forcing outlets to seek alternate lines of revenue besides advertising, according to eMarketer analyst Ross Benes. While the transition has been difficult, those who managed it have found the reliability of recurring revenue more appealing than the fickle business of advertising.

To accomplish the shift, Outside has acquired a grab bag of businesses and reoriented itself around them.

The company first began as an editorial roll-up, buying every legacy outdoor title of note, including affinity publications like Ski, Backpacker, Yoga Journal, and Peloton Magazine. It bolted on marketplaces, like Pinkbike, mapping services, like Trailforks, and fitness apps, like MapMyFitness. It snapped up services that catered to outdoor enthusiasts, like the photography platform FinisherPix, and those that facilitated their activities, like the booking platform Inntopia.

As more assets joined the Outside family, the company bundled their offerings to create the Outside+ subscription, which offers users access to everything from editorial content to mapping features.

Now, the company has more than 1 million paying subscribers, although that figure has remained largely flat in recent years and includes people paying for the bundle, as well as those paying for individual services. In total, Outside brings in 35% of its total revenue from the line item.

It also built out its travel and events services division, which includes assets FinisherPix, athleteReg, and Inntopia, the last of which powered more than $1 billion in hospitality bookings last year for over 250 customers, according to Thurston. These three businesses alone now represent 25% of the Outside business.

Outside has also spun up new ventures internally, including the rapidly growing Outside Days, a three-day event in Denver that Thurston envisions as the South by Southwest for outdoor enthusiasts. The event, which will host its third iteration this May, nearly doubled its revenue in its second year and more than doubled its participants. In the future, Thurston hopes to have more than 100,000 attendees to the festival.

All of these initiatives have succeeded in diversifying the Outside business away from advertising, allowing the platform to use the brand halo afforded by the Outside name to power businesses with better unit economics, according to media analyst Brian Morrissey.

Outside is not alone in making this transition. Events are perhaps the most salient example of this phenomenon, but publishers are increasingly looking to interlock their assets into a broader flywheel.

Some of the most successful digital media companies today are beginning to think more like brands, using their editorial to attract like-minded consumers before funneling them into line items with better margins. Dow Jones, for instance, has lately sought to more effectively cross-promote its assets, using business titles like The Wall Street Journal to lure in leads that it can then steer toward its higher-priced products, like its Leadership Institute or Factiva.

The media business is now explicitly becoming something that it has long implicitly been: a loss leader, according to Cory Corrine, founder of the AI and media podcast The Intersect.

“Media has value in that other kinds of businesses want to be associated with it, but it is no longer a growth vehicle,” Corrine said. “In media, the I in ROI stands for influence.”

Indeed, more than many, the transformation of Outside Interactive reflects the high cost of survival in the current media landscape. Many of the editorial titles that once made up its businesses have been shuttered or dramatically reduced. According to The Colorado Sun, every employee at Outside Magazine who was there before the acquisition has been shed.

The transformation has been painful, but the alternative for many of these independent media brands was irrelevance or, more likely, closure, according to Morrissey.

“The marketplace has not provided a viable path for these assets to be sustainable as standalone operations,” Morrissey said. “That is the reality. This is not a time for nostalgia.”

Talking Heds

Day One Mark: I joined Day One FM, the in-house podcast at the Day One Agency, to chat all things Super Bowl. We also touched on prediction markets, declining trust in media, and, most importantly, the best book I read last year. This was really fun—have a listen here.

The Price of a Super Bowl Stream (Scoop): This year marks just the second time that brands have been able to run streaming-only Super Bowl ads, which reach just a fraction of the broader combined audience (13 million compared to 130 million or so) but cost less and are far more measurable. This year, a standard Super Bowl ad costs between $8 million and $10 million before the price-match requirement, a mandate from NBC that requires any brand running an ad during the Big Game to match that spend on other NBC inventory— effectively doubling the price to participate.

The streaming-only ads, however, cost only between $2.5 million and $5 million, including the price-match, according to two sources familiar. Whereas in most television trends, brands (and programmers) move  from linear toward streaming, this one runs the opposite way: Brands are dipping their toe in the water with streaming, then upgrading to streaming and linear if they like what they see.

Bloomberg Blockbuster (Scoop): Bloomberg Media surpassed 707,000 paying subscribers last year and saw its overall revenue rise 6%, according to an internal memo from CEO Karen Saltser that I obtained. Subscriptions revenue increased 10%, while total advertising and sponsorship revenue—including live events—grew 5%. Of course, in regard to its finances, the memo included no real numbers, so exactly how much revenue Bloomberg is generating remains a mystery, as does its profitability—although sources have told me historically that the outfit is not self-sustaining. Nonetheless, without knowing what its expense profile looks like—Bloomberg famously pays its journalists quite generously—its finances at least appear to be trending in the right direction.

The Food52 Bake-Off: On Thursday, in a courtroom somewhere in the state of Delaware, the fate of Food52 will be determined. The auction process initiated by the bankrupt food publisher includes the eponymous title, as well as its sister brands Dansk and Schoolhouse. America’s Test Kitchen agreed to serve as the stalking horse bidder, offering a purchase price of $6.5 million for the trio, which were valued at over $300 million in 2021. Of course, Food52 and its bankers would prefer a competitive sales process drives that number up, but the three brands have been so badly mismanaged in recent years that such a prospect seems unlikely.

6AM City Rewinds (Scoop): The newsletter-based local news company 6AM City, which at one point staffed local outposts in around 30 cities across the country, has cut roughly 30% of its work force over the past 18 months, CEO and cofounder Ryan Heafy confirmed to ADWEEK. As part of this retrenchment, it has also retreated from around 11 markets, leaving its total of core markets at 19. U

sing technology it gained from its June acquisition of Good Daily, which uses artificial intelligence to scrape relevant local news and compile it into automated newsletters, the company has not abandoned any of its markets, per se. Instead, it has continued serving them, albeit with AI-enabled emails, which the company refers to as 5AM City. The painful decision was made in the name of achieving profitability, according to Heafy, which 6AM City is on pace to reach in this quarter.

The Whollop at WaPo: The Washington Post endured a historic round of layoffs on Wednesday, which essentially eliminated its sports desk, curbed its foreign coverage, and winnowed its metro reporting. The cuts are part of an effort to curb commercial declines at the beleaguered publisher, which lost $100 million in 2024. Newsroom staff and critics have beseeched owner Jeff Bezos to intervene, but he shows no signs of doing so.

Going forward, the storied news outlet plans to double down on its core areas of coverage, including politics and national security, although it faces ample competition in those spaces from outlets including Politico and Punchbowl News. The Post is effectively acting out The New York Times’ strategy in reverse, contracting from a multifaceted, general interest outlet into a niche resource for those working in and around The Hill.

Quote/Unquote

Amit Sharan is the senior vice president of marketing at Tatari, a television advertising and measurement platform that helps brands manage campaigns across linear and connected TV. Tatari has helped four clients place Super Bowl buys this year—Tecovas, Ro, Life360, and Manscaped—giving the agency an intimate look at the process.

Mark Stenberg: First off, why do brands need Tatari to buy a Super Bowl ad? What can’t they do themselves?

Amit Sharan: Ad-buyers cannot buy Super Bowl ads programmatically—they have to negotiate with the networks directly, and that requires not only relationships, but expertise. At the simplest level, we know how to negotiate these things based on historical data like viewership, pod position, and even creative performance. We are also a one-stop shop for cross-publisher measurement, so even if a brand negotiates the buy on their own, if they want to get a clear picture of its impact, they would have trouble doing that as effectively as we can.

Mark: Tatari placed two streaming-only ads this year—Life360 and Tecovas—and two last year with Ro and TickPick. How are those different from traditional ad-buys?

Amit: It’s a leveling ground. In the Super Bowl you might be expecting Unilever, but now you can get Manscaped. Streaming is also deterministic—we know exactly who is watching—whereas linear is probabilistic, meaning we have data points to triangulate traffic and conversions but there is less certainty. The entry point is also lower, which means less of a dent on an annual marketing budget.

Mark: How does the match-spend work? Do brands get to pick where the other inventory they want to buy?

Amit: Networks give brands places where they would love to see the match land, like priority programs, but it’s a conversation. In the next few weeks alone, NBC has the Super Bowl, Winter Olympics, and NBA All-Star Weekend. This ‘Legendary February’ is attracting a huge swell of lookalike audiences, so a lot of brands are spending their match-spend on those events. But, for other brands, it might make sense to wait till later in the year, like Black Friday or the holidays.

Mark: Is there a learning curve for newer brands experimenting with Super Bowl advertising?

Amit: A lot of digital-native brands are used to more performance-based marketing, with clear calls-to-action and models meant to track clicks and conversions. With the Super Bowl, they understand that this is about storytelling and brand marketing. Tecovas, for instance, is running a cinematic campaign they call an “anthem,” which is a great fit for the moment.

Mark: How many years away are we from a streaming-only Super Bowl?

Amit: CTV is the shiny new object and absolutely the future, but 50% of the country still has a cable subscription. The broadcast networks still offer a massive audience. The NFL would have to get a huge guarantee to abandon that, but rumor is that it’s planning to negotiate its rights again soon. Still, the only way it could happen anytime soon is if a Netflix or Amazon swooped in.

All the TV and Movie Trailers From the 2026 Super Bowl

Do you like scary movies? Paramount sure hopes so.

The studio recently kicked off this year’s Super Bowl movie spots, debuting its new trailer for the upcoming horror film Scream 7. In addition to Paramount, Super Bowl 60 movie advertisers include several usual suspects, with Disney and Universal debuting multiple trailers; however, there is perhaps a slight tweak to strategy.

Disney, which typically promotes its Marvel films during the Big Game, with Thunderbolts appearing in the game last year and Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, is making the MCU sit this one out. It’s an interesting change, given that the studio has Avengers: Doomsday (Dec. 18) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31) premiering in 2026. But there’s still plenty to promote.

Though it’s speculation for now, Disney is expected to put its weight behind The Mandalorian and Grogu (May 22); Hoppers (March 6), an upcoming Pixar film; and possibly Toy Story 5 (June 19) for Super Bowl 60.

Meanwhile, with NBCUniversal broadcasting the game, Universal is also expected to make a big push, promoting Disclosure Day (June 12), The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 1), and Minions 3 (July 1). Universal declined to comment.

Additionally, Variety reports that Lionsgate will showcase a spot for its upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael (April 24). However, that ad may air in the pre-game portion of the Super Bowl.

With that, it appears Netflix, Apple, Sony, and Warner Bros. Discovery are sitting out this time around. That’s a typical list of benchwarmers; however, with ads reaching $10 million for 30 seconds for the first time, it makes sense that not everyone is clamoring to get in the game.

Since NBCU is already selling potential overtime spots, there’s still room for surprises, and with NBC and Peacock also planning to promote several of their shows, there will be plenty of trailers throughout the night.

We’ll be updating this list as the trailers come in, so see them all below:

Scream 7 (Feb. 27)

Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group are bringing back Ghostface—and Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell)—for another killer showdown. The film also brings the old gang back together, with Courteney Cox and Matthew Lillard supposedly coming back—somehow.

EXCLUSIVE: Viral Tech Podcast TBPN Will Air Regional Super Bowl Ad Featuring Former Guests

TBPN, the hourslong daily tech podcast hosted by the young, brash entrepreneur-investors Jordi Hays and John Coogan, spun up significant cultural cachet—and big sponsorship dollars—in the year-and-change since its debut. Now, the show has bought a regional Super Bowl ad, set to air on broadcast across the Bay Area and Silicon Valley.

The 15-second spot, produced in-house, showcases previous TBPN guests, opening with interview clips of Palantir co-founder and CEO Alex Karp, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg, investors Mark Cuban and Marc Andreessen, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and others—before panning out to show a colorful collage of business logos that come together to form an all-caps ‘TBPN’ logo. Each small icon in the image represents an organization that has appeared on the show.

The investment is a bold and unusual bet for a podcast business. “It’s completely unnecessary for a media company to buy advertising,” Hays told ADWEEK. “The nature of media is that you’re constantly putting out things that are promoting the business naturally, just through the content.”

So why do it?

Well, for one, the show’s president, Dylan Abruscato, a former entrepreneur and marketer, secured a kind of sweetheart deal on the spot through his connections at NBCUniversal, where he worked for three years in the mid-2010s. While national Super Bowl LX spots have sold for up to $10 million, regional spots can sell for anywhere between $50,000 and $1 million-plus. Abruscato told ADWEEK he paid less than $50,000, thanks in part to his ties to NBC Sports, the game’s official broadcaster this year.

“I started my career in the ad sales team at NBC, so I knew the right questions to ask, and the right spots in the game to request,” he said.

Even so, the investment was mostly for the hell of it. TBPN doesn’t need a Super Bowl ad to generate awareness, grow its audience, or drive downloads, Hays and Abruscato suggested.

“We believe in doing things purely for fun,” Hays said.

Most of all, TBPN wants to deliver a show of thanks to its many guests in an unexpected way. Hays called the push “Operation Surprise and Delight.”

“We wanted to give back in a small way to and create a fun moment for everybody that’s been a part of creating the show,” Hays said. “It’s really just this big collection of people that have made the show possible and are what make it great. So surprising everyone with this fun moment just made a lot of sense.”

Hays and Abruscato said that the podcast stands to benefit from the project’s ripple effects. In particular, they expect the ad to travel far beyond the broadcast, spreading across the social platforms that TBPN knows intimately—and has long relied on for growth. “This ad is optimized for shareability,” Hays said. “I would expect it to get millions of views across X and other platforms.”

The concept came together quickly, prompting TBPN to produce the spot in-house rather than enlist an agency. It gave its three-person production team—out of just 10 full-time employees—the chance to show what they could do.

The spot represents TBPN’s second big marketing push, following an out-of-home buy last summer that brought Hays’ and Coogan’s face to a billboard in New York.

“There’s a running joke on the show about our love for advertising,” Hays said, nodding to early episodes in which Hays and Coogan inserted ad reads into their scripts even though they had no advertisers. While some podcasts view advertising as a “necessary evil,’” he added, TBPN has “really leaned into it.” The podcast’s sponsors now tally over 25, and include big names like Google Gemini, Figma, Plaid, Ramp, and Shopify.

“Through advertising and being an ad-supported media company, all the content that we’ve ever put out has been free for the entire world. We’ve never paywalled anything. We don’t have plans to paywall anything.”

The appearance is also a sign that TBPN’s ambitions are only growing. “We constantly are pushing ourselves to go bigger—that’s the challenge,” Hays said. In 2025, some of the show’s biggest moments included covering Figma’s IPO in July and interviewing Mark Zuckerberg at Meta Connect, the tech titan’s annual developer conference. Now, the show’s Super Bowl ad is the next escalation.

“Then the bar gets set,” said Hays, “and then we have to figure out how to do it again.”

Why Lay’s Put Its Chips on Two Different Super Bowl Ads

Lay’s has two hot potatoes for the upcoming Super Bowl.

Today, the company confirmed to ADWEEK that it will have two ads in the upcoming Big Game, with one spotlighting the company’s local farmers and another featuring a fan activation that’ll deliver free chips to thousands.

“This is a big year for Lay’s. We’re relaunching our brand, and we decided to go in a big way. It’s not only on the campaign in the Super Bowl, but we are doing a complete rebranding,” Hernán Tantardini, CMO, PepsiCo Foods US, told ADWEEK. “So for the first time, we’re going to do two different spots.”

The first ad, “The Last Harvest,” a 60-second tear-jerker airing in the first half of the game, takes the baton from last year’s “The Little Farmer,” spotlighting the farmers who bring Lay’s potato chips to life.

“We’re highlighting the real stars of our brand that are our celebrities, the farmers,” Tantardini said. “We want to make them the celebrities of this Big Game.”

Like “The Little Farmer,” the ad is inspired by a real-life story of farmers who work with Lay’s. In this case, it’s the Neumiller Farms in Illinois, a third-generation potato and vegetable farm now run by father and daughter team of Tom Neumiller and Katie Flomin. The ad—directed by Academy Award-winner Taika Waititi and set to the song “Somewhere Only We Know”—focuses on the farm passing through generations.

It’s a theme that extends beyond the Super Bowl for the company, with PepsiCo and the PepsiCo Foundation planning to invest more than $1 million in the United States over the next two years to support the next generation of farmers.

The second ad, “The Lay’s Challenge,” is a 30-second spot airing sometime after “The Last Harvest,” in which Lay’s asks fans to scan a QR code to receive the freshest bag of Lay’s chips they’ve ever had.

Overall, the company is set to give away 100,000 bags of chips, delivering them to viewers’ doors—from potato to chip in 72 hours or less. And if they’re late, the customers can receive a bag of Lay’s each month for a year, according to Tantardini.

The ad will be revealed during the game, but you can see the teaser here:

“The big thing is it’s going to be across America. No matter where that order is going to be placed from, we are committed to delivering to almost every single place in America,” Tantardini said, noting that the company was lining up farms to work with on the stunt, with consumers even learning about the specific farm their chips come from.

In addition, Lay’s is planning to have fun surprises on the way as it delivers its chips, with Tantardini saying even he may be delivering a bag.

“It’s not a one-month push. This is a multi-year plan. And beyond this plan, this is also a super sport year. So American football is the No. 1 sport in America, but it’s also soccer arriving to the U.S. later on the year, and we’re going to be the sponsors of the FIFA World Cup,” Tantardini said. “So expect more from this team for those special moments of the year.”
