Marketing Morsels: The Brand That Made Fetch Happen and More

Welcome to Marketing Morsels, Adweek’s weekly sampling of the most delectable brand stunts and campaigns we saw this week (but weren’t able to cover elsewhere). This week, discover offerings from Fetch, Banza, Duolingo, Hardee’s and more. Enjoy the assortment!

Morsel #1: This brand made Fetch happen

Regina George can shove it: Shopper rewards platform Fetch speaks to lovers of the film Mean Girls in a new campaign focused on how it “made Fetch happen.” The central video stars Daniel Franzese, who plays Cady Heron’s friend and collaborator Damian in the film, and references fan-favorite moments from the movie. The “Fetch Happened” platform—which also includes merch—aims to promote the brand’s features and celebrate its user base, which the brand reports growing by one million sign-ups every month.

Morsel #2: Banza gets literal about cutting carbs

Chickpea-based packaged food brand Banza partnered with upcycle designer and creator Nicole McLaughlin to literally “cut carbs.” McLaughlin created a cheeky video showing herself cutting the brand’s chickpea crust pizza using creatively designed pizza cutter shoes, an axe, hedge trimmers and more.

Morsel #3: Duolingo gets ahead of Quitter’s Day

image

Duolingo is a popular destination among New Year’s resolutioners, and for Quitter’s Day—the second Friday of January when people are most likely to abandon their goals—the brand is lending a hand. Two days after Quitter’s Day, the app will set up a Streak Repair Shop in Union Square in New York City, where fans can have their broken streaks negated and score a photo opp with Duolingo’s owl mascot, Duo. In the run-up to the stunt, the brand has deployed Duo to roam the city, as well as outdoor reminders to continue lessons (from subway floors to fortune cookies), and even call-outs for specific users in Times Square.

Morsel #4: Heavenly Philadelphia cream cheese turns hellish

Philadelphia has reached into the depths of the underworld for its latest limited-edition product, “A Little Taste of Hell.” It’s a hellishly hot cream cheese infused with ghost peppers measuring at 1,041,427 Scoville Heat Units that was available—at least for this first stunt—only to Toronto residents who order via Uber Eats on Jan. 13 (aptly a Friday the 13th). The release was accompanied by influencer videos including a partnership with TikToker Celina Spooky Boo.

Morsel #5: AI can’t make a Hardee’s burger

In a bid to prove that human creativity can’t get be outstripped by AI tools such as Chat GPT and DALL-E, Hardee’s challenged AI to imagine its Super Star Burger—and the results were entertaining (and a little disturbing), to say the least.

Morsel #6: Baileys creates a marshmallow puffer jacket

Timed to ski season, Baileys, maker of creamy liqueurs that are popular additions to hot cocoas and coffees in the winter months, partnered with designer Jason Rembert to create a branded Marshmallow Puffer Jacket inspired by the seasonal necessity of hot chocolate (with Baileys, of course). The video above shows Rembert and supermodel Joan Smalls discussing the intersection of fashion and the brand.

Morsel #7: A puzzle from White Castle artwork benefits staffers in need

image

White Castle worked with New York artist Dave Pollot to create a 285-piece jigsaw puzzle featuring a still life he created of the brand’s sliders positioned among a peaceful floral and fruit arrangement. Proceeds from the puzzle will go to the chain’s Member Relief Fund, which helps its staffers who run into unexpected financial challenges. The artwork belongs to Pollot’s “Calorie Composition” series, which shows food items from brands arranged among common still-life objects.

Morsel #8: A man and his dog make many friends in this ad for Nutrish

Rachael Ray’s pet food brand Nutrish has released a campaign that explains how it lends a hand to animal shelters. “Feed Yours. Help More,” a campaign from Publicis Groupe’s bespoke agency for the J.M. Smucker Co. PSOne, acknowledges that people can’t adopt every animal, but suggests they can help more by purchasing Nutrish, whose proceeds benefit shelter pets. In the ad, a man and his dog go to the park, only to be followed home by an army of adorable friends.

For many, mental health can not only be a challenge in itself, but can oftentimes be a lonely battle. For PAWS NY, a nonprofit pet organization, pets are not just great companions, but are powerful healing aids.

To highlight the mental health benefits pets can provide, PAWS NY and agency Klick Health launched a heart-tugging short film, The Bridge, focused on the importance of having a pet as a companion during difficult times.

The animated spot is part of PAWS NY’s larger initiative to help New Yorkers overcome physical and financial pet care challenges to maintain the life-saving bond between humans and their animal companions.

That’s why Raja Rajamannar, the brand’s chief marketing and communications officer and healthcare business president, said he is still overall bullish on what proponents will promote the next iteration of the internet. Twitter’s New Buyers and Safari’s Ascendance: Experts’ Take on What 2023 Has in Store

The last few months of 2022 have seen some unusual market dynamics, including an increasingly murky future for Twitter with forecasts of it shedding users, CTV ad spend continues to see grow while the long-awaited ad business from Netflix takes a wobbly turn, and rumors swirl of Apple building its own demand-side platform.

Ahead of a major privacy reckoning in 2023, Adweek spoke with five industry experts about their boldest calls for next year.

Disney’s Bob Iger acquires Twitter

With Twitter’s future looking uncertain, some believe the platform might have a new owner in Disney’s CEO Bob Iger.

What Marketers Should Expect From CES This Year

Tens of thousands of industry professionals will descend on Las Vegas this January for the first full-scale in-person Consumer Electronics Show in three years.

After an all-virtual show in 2021 and a scaled-down version last January, organizers expect this iteration of the tech industry’s largest trade show to be a return to form with at least 70% larger footprint than last year’s show, which drew 45,000 people, and more than 3,000 exhibitors and 2.1 million square feet of show space.

As travel became a polarizing topic in the depths of the pandemic, Kayak decided to take a risk.

Backed by artificial intelligence that revealed that “denialism” was a hot topic online, the travel booking site waded into potential political controversy with a set of spots that poked fun at conspiracy-minded debates playing out across the country.

In the latest episode of Adweek’s Adnatomy, we spoke with the brand, agency Supernatural and the producer to take us behind the scenes on the careful decision-making process around the ad and how machines played a role in bringing the concept to life.

Marketing Morsels: 8 Flaming Yeezy Sneakers, Wednesday’s Hearse, Holiday Hogwarts Magic and More

Welcome to Marketing Morsels, Adweek’s weekly roundup of the marketing news you may have missed. In this week’s selection, sample stunts and campaigns from Turo, Uber Eats, Instacart and more. Enjoy the assortment!

Morsel #1: Watch Yeezy shoes burn for eight flaming nights

In light of Kanye “Ye” West’s antisemitic remarks earlier this year and a general rise in open antisemitism, creative agency Bakery has launched “8 Flaming Nights” at Hanukkye.com, where viewers can watch as each night of Hanukkah, a candle on the menorah is ignited—and so is a Yeezy sneaker. The site serves to raise funds for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in its fight to educate combat antisemitism.

Morsel #2: Turo and Whalar take Wednesday fans for a death-defying spin

Car sharing marketplace Turo conjured up a hearse with Whalar and TikTok star Alexia Del Valle. The stunt, themed after Netflix’s popular Addams Family series Wednesday, shows Del Valle in her Morticia-esque best, welcoming viewers to take a ride. The 1950 Cadillac Hearse Edition was available to book earlier this month, with the brand inviting fans to roll up to their holiday celebrations in the deathly vehicle.

Morsel #3: The ASPCA’s dog-centric PSA will get stuck in your head

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), FCB Health New York and production studio Calabash developed a video and campaign surrounding a jingle called “Dogs Eat Everything.” The silly animated PSA, which was styled after Schoolhouse Rock cartoons, has a humorous tone but a serious message, alerting pet parents to the dangers of wires, grapes and beyond, and informing them about what to do in case of emergency.

Morsel #4: Uber Eats heads to Hogwarts

With the help of agency Special U.S., Uber Eats and Warner Bros.’ The Wizarding World of Harry Potter have developed a limited-edition trunk for Potterheads filled with sweet magical treats, including the components needed to make a gingerbread Hogwarts castle. Recipients can use their “wands” (smartphones) to unlock interactive elements for each treat, built by Robotproof for the 8th Wall platform, such as scannable cookies that will transport fans to the Whomping Willow or a Quidditch match, and an incantation that will transform the castle into a unique, innovative experience.

Morsel #5: Smartphones really can do it all in this Instacart campaign

People can use their smartphones for pretty much anything these days. Instacart, ShopRite and creative agency McGarrah Jessee worked with director Mike Long to create “It’s All in the Phone,” which takes that concept literally, showing people using their phones for tasks that go beyond typical capabilities, such as toasting PopTarts and chopping carrots, in order to demonstrate the range of items that can be ordered through Instacart.

Morsel #6: This Danny Trejo PSA shows the problems with fake medicine

Content studio The-Artery created a PSA campaign called “Bad Meds” to raise awareness about counterfeit medicine. The campaign, which stars Danny Trejo and was sponsored by official organizations including the Alliance of Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP) Foundation, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and the LAPD, spans out-of-home, social media and TV. The trailer-style video starts out in a lighthearted style, with the actor showing fake movie magic on the set of his films, before pivoting to a more serious message about the flawed effects of the fake medicine.
