Is Google Analytics 4 right for you? What you need to consider

Google is officially sunsetting Universal Analytics (UA) this Saturday, July 1. And if you haven’t yet switched to Google Analytics 4 (GA4), Google will do it for you.

GA4 is a powerful analytics platform – but is it the right solution you – even if it is free?

Fundamentally different from UA, GA4 requires you to learn a new way of tracking data and new interfaces. So, even if you’ve been using Google Analytics for years, GA4 is an entirely new system you need to learn.

Now is the perfect moment to be sure this new analytics system is the right one.

Here is a guide to determining that for yourself.

GA4 weak spots

“There are definitely reasons to look elsewhere, depending on your budgets, depending on the type of tracking that you need,” says Sharon Mostyn, CEO of Mostyn Marketing Group. “The one that I’m seeing with a lot of healthcare clients is that Google has said blatantly we are not HIPAA compliant. So that’s a good reason to consider alternatives.”

GA4 is a fundamentally different platform from Universal Analytics. It uses event-based tracking, which means that it tracks user interactions with your website or app as individual events. This is in contrast to Universal Analytics, which tracked user sessions as a series of hits.

The event-based tracking model in GA4 has several advantages. It:

  • Allows you to track a wider range of user interactions.
  • Provides more granular data about user behavior.
  • Is less reliant on cookies, making it more future-proof.

But there are disadvantages to consider with GA4.

In addition to privacy issues, controlling your data is one of many things to be concerned about.

No support

“There’s a thresholding that occurs depending on whether you’ve got Google Signals on,” Mostyn said. “So if you’re looking for all of your data there can be a bit of a black box with GA4.”

Another issue: GA4’s lack of dedicated support or onboarding. This means a lot of work for large businesses with complex websites and data that must install and customize it.

Businesses of all sizes need to keep in mind that there is now a cost for long-term data storage. While GA4 comes with a free connection to BigQuery, Google’s data warehouse, there can be fees for accessing and processing your data.

Questions to consider

Here are a few other questions to consider when deciding on a web analytics platform:

  • Business goals and objectives. What do you want to achieve with your analytics? Do you need to track specific metrics, such as sales, leads or website traffic?
  • Features and functionalities. Does it have the features you need, such as event tracking, integration with other tools or advanced analytics?
  • Learning curve. How easy is it to learn? Do you need to spend hours on courses or tutorials?
  • User-friendliness. How easy is it to use? Can you easily track the metrics you need and generate reports?
  • Cost. How much does it cost? Does it offer a free plan or a trial version? Are there maintenance or other long
  • The future. Is the platform future-proof? Will it be able to handle your changing business needs?
  • Support. Is support available? How quickly can you get help if you have problems?
  • Data. How does it handle large amounts of data? How easy is it to export data?
  • Stack integration. How easily can it be integrated with other marketing tools?

By considering these factors, you can choose a web analytics platform that meets your specific needs and helps you achieve your business goals.

Meta’s Nicola Mendelsohn on Reels, AI and What Marketers Are Looking For Now

.article-native-ad { border-bottom: 1px solid #ddd; margin: 0 45px; padding-bottom: 20px; margin-bottom: 20px; } .article-native-ad svg { color: #ddd; font-size: 34px; margin-top: 10px; } .article-native-ad p { line-height:1.5; padding:0!important; padding-left: 10px!important; } .article-native-ad strong { font-weight:500; color:rgb(46,179,178); }

The brightest minds in marketing and tech converge at NexTech, Nov. 14–15 in NYC. Get your pass for the latest on generative AI, gaming and more.

CANNES, France—In a year where budgets are under intense scrutiny, agencies, platforms and even the biggest of the big tech scaled back their presence in Cannes this year. But for the companies and their clients who did attend—estimates range from 12,000-15,000 people—it’s all about finding growth in an otherwise down year.

“We have reduced numbers of people that have come from Meta. But in terms of what the clients are talking about, it’s very much about who can help us get the best growth, who can help us get the best return,” said ad business veteran Nicola Mendelsohn, head of the global business group at Meta.

Adweek caught up with Mendelsohn to find out where that growth is coming from, the efficiencies of AI and an update on the metaverse: “We’re all in,” she says.

Adweek: It is day 4 here in Cannes, what are your takeaways so far?
Nicola Mendelsohn: We’ve been running all week. Reels School is having a moment here at Cannes. Advertisers are really saying, ‘what are the top tips and tricks that we should be thinking about in order to reach the consumer?’ We’ve got 2 billion Reels that are being shared every single day. That kind of energy and the momentum, makes it one of our fastest growing products we’ve ever had.

Last year here, you had a demonstration of brands diving into the metaverse using the Quest headsets. Where is Meta with the metaverse now?
We’re all in on the metaverse. You can go and test it again and experience it (points to Meta’s Quest demonstration area). We’ve always been really clear that when Mark set out the vision, this will be something that will be realized in five to 10 years time. We’re seeing lots more use cases being experienced, lots more of the headsets being sold. But we couldn’t talk about the metaverse, without talking about AI. One of the fundamental building blocks of the metaverse has always been AI and generative AI and the ability for people to be able to imagine a world that they want to create. So, yeah, still very present.

Back to AI real quick, and this whole existential crisis of what AI might evolve into. What are your feelings on that?
I love history. And if you look back on history of any new technology, you get very similar patterns. We all fall in love with it. It’s all so exciting. And then you get people that get very worried. And then you go through a period of stabilization and normalcy. What’s interesting in this one is it’s kind of all happened at once. I had this conversation just last week with Yann LeCun, who’s our chief AI scientist. He is so positive on the amazing implications of generative AI and AI in general. Do I think that there can be challenges? Yes. But we set up a responsible AI team many years ago. So we really understand the need to make sure that as we’re building our products that we’re thinking through that responsibly.

How does this Cannes feel different from previous years?
We’ve gone through a very difficult couple of years with so much uncertainty in so many different ways. And I think where businesses are, is to say, ‘let’s just assume we’re going to expect uncertainty.’ And I think what that’s allowed coming into this Cannes is that there’s more of a stability on an unstable basis.

And, talk about the outlook for the rest of the year.
The advertisers I’m talking to actually seem cautiously optimistic going into the second half of the year. I think people still feel that ’24 is a bit too far away. That’s kind of how we’re feeling.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Twitter’s Small First Step in Quelling Ad Buyers’ Brand Safety Concerns

Twitter is taking advertiser concerns about brand safety more seriously.

Beyond the Twitter thread from head of sales Chris Riedy at Cannes Lions, the platform has initiated a request for proposal process to evaluate brand safety solutions from its tech vendors Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify, as well as Zefr and Unitary, to offer advertisers increased control and transparency over the context in which their ads are displayed on Twitter, according to the platform.

The RFP process will take place for the next few weeks.

The news comes nearly nine months after Elon Musk’s tumultuous Twitter takeover, which triggered an exodus of advertisers from the platform. But some ad buyers, who had called for more clarity on Twitter’s content moderation policies and adjacency controls, are still asking for more.

“It is a good step, but it’s only one step in that direction,” said Avi Ben-Zvi, general manager of North America at mobile ad platform Winclap. “A lot of the narrative with Elon taking over was he’s going to allow some bad actors back on the platform. With Linda [Yaccarino] stepping up as CEO, they need to continue to address that and can’t just say, ‘We’re going to work with these third parties and make sure your ad isn’t alongside other bad content.’”

Since Musk became involved, marketers have had limited communication with Twitter and have been primarily focused on the platform’s commitment to maintaining a safe community. However, this recent announcement comes as a tangible step forward, providing some clarity into its brand safety steps.

Despite the platform’s policies and measures, incidents of false or misleading information and hateful content continue to arise. This week alone, ads from major brands like Disney, Microsoft and The Telegraph newspaper appeared alongside neo-Nazi propaganda on the platform.

Marketers remain skeptical

Meanwhile, ad spend on Twitter increased by more than 40% in the last year across CPG, media & entertainment, financial services, tech/telco and health brands, according to Joe Benarroch, a former senior executive at NBCU now leading business operations at Twitter. He wouldn’t share specifics.

The Twitter thread claimed that 99.99% of its content is free from hate speech. And over 99% of measured ad impressions were found to be placed adjacent to content considered safe based on the GARM brand safety floor.

They’re nice PR stats, but the question is, does the platform favor controversial content?

Avi Ben-Zvi, GM of North America, Winclap

Still, reports indicate that Twitter’s ad sales plunged 59%, totaling $88 million, during the five weeks from April 1 to the first week of May, compared to the previous year.

“They’re nice PR stats, but the question is, does the platform favor controversial content?” said Ben-Zvi. “For the other 0.1%, what is the virality behind that content?”

Benarroch emphasized that Twitter’s enforcement policy is centered on minimizing the reach of hateful content. While acknowledging the presence of hate speech on the platform, Twitter aims to limit its reach and visibility. According to Benarroch, Twitter’s tracking data indicates that impressions of hate are trending at 0.01% of total impressions.

“What this means is that the visibility of this content is significantly lower compared to other non-hateful, non-toxic content,” he said.

Meanwhile, the platform introduced its first iteration of Adjacency Controls on Dec. 16, 2022 to give advertisers some control over ad placements. It has reported a 99% efficacy rate in diverting ads from undesirable content. The platform said more than 1,500 advertisers are utilizing these controls to safeguard their brands on the platform.

However, according to Ben-Zvi, Adjacency Controls still have room for improvement, such as adding more visibility and acknowledging instances where ads have been withheld from appearing alongside incorrect or potentially hateful speech.

“Showcasing that to advertisers is going to be important because it will reinvigorate their confidence in the platform,” he added.

Ripples Through Reddit as Advertisers Weather Moderators Strike

Introducing the Adweek Podcast Network. Access infinite inspiration in your pocket on everything from career advice and creativity to metaverse marketing and more. Browse all podcasts.

Over the past two days, more than 8,000 Reddit communities have restricted user access, making it harder for people to view or contribute content to a particular community, while more are encouraging a boycott of the platform.

These actions are in protest of a new policy that will charge third-party apps for the use of Reddit’s previously free API.

And advertisers, who are paying to reach these eyeballs, have felt knock-on effects, leading to holding campaigns, redirected impressions, softer metrics and more scrutiny of the benefits of the platform.

“After the blackout, we will be closely monitoring user behavior on Reddit and guide clients when we can unpause,” said Freddy Dabaghi, managing director at Stagwell-backed Crispin Porter Bogusky, which has asked clients to stop campaigns, depending on their client goals.

Dabaghi notes this pause will be shorter than more prolonged advertiser boycotts on Twitter and Meta. Still, Reddit has been working on its relationships with advertisers, and any accumulated goodwill could be diminished if the precarious situation continues.

Redirection and soft metrics

Moderators are protesting a new Reddit policy, starting July 1, charging third-party apps to use its API. Some of these apps, which help moderators manage and grow their communities, have said they will have to shut down because these charges make running their businesses prohibitively expensive. Currently, these protests are impacting a small percentage of Reddit’s more than 100,000 active communities.

On Monday, Reddit’s ad manager encountered a brief outage, during which buyers were unable to look at reporting statistics, even while impressions were still delivering, though the impact was fairly minimal, per four sources. (The Verge reported the moderator blackout crashed the site, although it’s unclear whether the crashes are related).

Reddit told advertisers that it was redirecting impressions lost from these blacked-out subreddits to the home page, as there has been an overall spike in traffic to the platform, according to a media buyer who was not authorized to speak on the communication.

“By directing ads that would have gone to the blacked-out [moderated] pages to the homepage is kind of defeating the point,” said Liam Johnson, senior account director at Brainlabs, who hadn’t seen that particular note from Reddit. “The ads would then just be shown to the masses and outside of any of the contextually relevant locations that advertisers are trying to achieve with Reddit.”

Advertisers can still target users according to interests and other contexts when they’re accessing the home page.

Campaigns have notched slightly lower impression delivery and consequently, slightly higher CPMs, over the days of the blackout, Johnson said. If the performance weakness continues for a week or two, the agency would start recommending decreasing spend with Reddit or directing it to other platforms. The moderator blackout is supposed to end Wednesday.

Effective CPMs were up about 1%-2% in the past two days, equivalent to a high-traffic day on the platform, said Darren D’Altorio, vp of paid social at Wpromote. Several other buyers told Adweek that they had not noticed a change in their Reddit CPMs.

Reddit’s CEO said the charge is partly to ensure large language models from firms like OpenAI and Google can’t access Reddit data without paying for it.

Notably, the policy would open up another revenue stream for Reddit, which has been exploring an IPO. Reddit has also been on a campaign to woo more advertisers to the platform, nabbing an exec from Meta to deepen ties with small businesses and international advertisers. It recently announced layoffs of 5% of its employees. Reddit did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Brands go quiet

The moderator boycott is not only affecting auction dynamics but media strategy, as advertisers don’t want to appear tone-deaf during a contentious period for the platform.

Two Wpromote clients canceled two premium, takeover-style campaigns that were supposed to launch this week, and received make-goods for the impressions that had already been delivered, D’Altorio said.

[Advertisers] didn’t want to become the subject of users’ opinions about Reddit’s decisions.

—Anonymous media buyer

The campaigns will relaunch next week, while other standard campaigns remain unaffected, he said.

D’Altorio asked several clients to reschedule Ask Me Anything activations—where brands chat directly with their customers—as “we shouldn’t muddy the waters with our brand,” he said.

The anonymous media buyer source said one campaign turned off comments on their ads today.

“They didn’t want to become the subject of users’ opinions about Reddit’s decisions,” the buyer said.

Accumulated goodwill

For years, brands have been wary of the platform due to Redditers’ hostility toward advertisers. But the platform’s recent outreach has helped shift that narrative, with several sources telling Adweek they’ve increased their investment with Reddit in the past few years.

“Where they are in their ads journey is really exciting for brands,” D’Altorio said. “It’s a way you can maintain your overall brand identity but take some cool, calculated risk.”

But if the blackout continues, Reddit’s recently accumulated goodwill with advertisers could quickly dissipate.

“It’s going to be a big turning point,” Johnson said. “They’re hoping for the easy option where everyone quiets down.”

Amazon is testing AI-generated summaries of product reviews

Amazon has confirmed it is testing a new feature in its Shopping app – summaries of product reviews, generated by AI.

The summary provides a summary of both positive and negative feedback about products. Beneath that is a note: “AI-generated from the text of customer reviews.”

Why we care. Reviews are a key factor when people are deciding whether to buy a product. This feature could potentially be helpful for users – condensing hundreds or thousands of reviews into a useful summary. The big thing to watch is whether this could possibly negatively or positively impact sales.

What it looks like. Here’s one example of an AI-generated summary of customer reviews for a toy:

What Amazon is saying. Amazon confirmed the test but declined to reveal any details about how it is generating these product summaries. An Amazon spokesperson said:

  • “We are significantly investing in generative AI across all of our businesses.”

More generative AI at Amazon. The company is also reportedly preparing to add generative AI to its search experience. Amazon is also building tools for advertisers that generate videos and images.

TikTok targets $20 billion in ecommerce sales

TikTok is reportedly planning to quadruple its global ecommerce operations, with the goal of selling $20 billion in merchandise.

The ByteDance-owned social media app will rely heavily on rapid growth in Southeast Asia to reach its optimistic target. TikTok also hopes to also boost sales in the U.S. and Europe, Bloomberg reported.

Why we care: TikTok had the highest app store spend across the U.S., UK, France, Germany and Indonesia in the first quarter of 2023, according to Data.ai. Teaming up with the social media giant could not only help advertisers reach a huge audience on the most addictive social app in the world, but also a consumer base who are more likely to spend, which could result in higher conversions.

How does it work? TikTok Shop shows ads to users on its main social media app while they scroll through a never-ending feed of short video clips and livestreams. The business model, which combines entertainment with impulse buying, has already helped Douyin (TikTok’s sister app) establish itself as a major ecommerce player in China, competing against the likes of Amazon and Shopee – an achievement it hopes to repeat in the U.S.

Why now. Revenue from TikTok’s advertising business, which has historically been its primary source of income, is reportedly falling due to a worldwide slowdown in ad sales. So the app is now focusing its efforts on making the $17 trillion online ecommerce arena its main revenue driver instead.

Is TikTok banned in the U.S.? The state of Montana is imposing a ban on TikTok downloads from next year. Lawmakers in other states have also proposed similar bills for a nationwide ban across the U.S. – but a final decision is yet to be made by President Joe Biden.

TikTok fighting a potential U.S. ban. TikTok has 150 million U.S. users and is actively taking steps to prevent the ban, including introducing a range of security measures to address national security concerns raised by American politicians. It is giving partners like Oracle Corp. the right to review its technology and cordoning off American TikTokers’ data.

What TikTok has said. TikTok has declined to comment on its ecommerce plans. However, the social media did release a statement about its future in the U.S.:

  • “A US ban on TikTok is a ban on the export of American culture and values to the billion-plus people who use our service worldwide. We’re disappointed to see this rushed piece of legislation move forward, despite its considerable negative impact on the free speech rights of millions of Americans who use and love TikTok.”

Reddit launches new ad products to boost conversions

Reddit launched two new ad products today – Contextual Keyword Targeting and Product Ads. The new features have been rolled out to help advertisers reach higher-value customers and to simplify the Reddit Ads Manager tool.

Why we care. Advertisers will be able to reach their target audience more easily and accurately, which could lead to increased conversions.

What’s new? Reddit’s new ad products enable brands to better connect with consumers already in research mode with the intention of making a purchase. These are:

Contextual Keyword Targeting. This new feature will help you reach consumers in active conversations on Reddit by choosing specific keywords you want their brand to be associated with. You will also be able to align keywords with creative ad copy for increased relevance.

As Reddit threads often become evergreen sources of information, Contextual Keyword Targeting will also provide long-term advertising opportunities.

Product Ads. This new ad format will let you target consumers already in the midst of their shopping journey. It will display information such as product descriptions and pricing (in local currency).

Product Ads will also feature call-to-action buttons that will direct users to a brand’s product page. Also, you will also be able to create ads directly from existing catalogs, quickly and easily with no need for additional resources.

In addition, if you are simultaneously activating ad campaigns on competitor platforms, you will be able to easily import the same catalogs to the Reddit Ads Manager.

What Product Ads look like. Here’s an example of a Reddit Product Ad:

  • “These updates will uplevel the search-and-discover experience for both brands and our users by tapping into our differentiated value as a hub for actionable conversation.”
  • “Our approach to this next phase of our Ads Product offering is to help brands help people make informed decisions, find answers to their questions, and discover products they care about – while in the process enabling advertisers to build connections with new and valuable new audiences,” Klaje added.

Interesting stats:

  • Redditors make 2x more category purchases than other online customers.
  • Redditors spend 2.5x more per purchase.
  • Redditors are more than 56% more likely to talk about a brand online positively.
  • Redditors are more than 46% more likely to trust a brand that advertises on Reddit.

Microsoft Store Ads to appear in Bing search results

Microsoft Store Ads will now appear in Bing search results, the company announced. Previously only available in the U.S., Microsoft will also open access to Store Ads to advertisers around the world.

Why we care. Aside from expanding the reach of Store Ads campaigns beyond the Microsoft Store to Bing’s search results, advertisers will now have the opportunity to reach customers outside of the U.S. as Microsoft Store Ads is going global this month, with plans to expand to 150 new regions.

How it works. Developers can promote their apps built for Windows on Microsoft Store Ads by following a few simple steps.

What’s next? Microsoft announced at Build 2023 that it is also planning to launch additional features to simplify its existing process for advertisers.

  • Premium Search Ads: Available through the Microsoft Store, this feature has been created to offer a visual and prominent ad placement to help advertisers reach more customers and increase downloads.
  • Microsoft Advertising Software Development Kit (SDK): Advertisers will be able to use this tool to re-target audiences on the Microsoft Network.
  • Simplified user interface: The new design enables advertisers to link their apps with one click once. This will make looking up app information easier as digital marketers will be able to track and analyze app installations, in-app purchases, as well as monitor customer engagement.

The announcement. You can read more about Store Ads in Microsoft’s announcement.
