Ticker: CBS News Tweaks Format of CBS Evening News

Top of the Ticker: As it nears its first month anniversary, CBS Evening News is making minor adjustments to its format. The evening broadcast, helmed by John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, has seen three straight weeks of declines in total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo since its January debut. The show initially favored long-form pieces on crucial stories, similar to the style seen on 60 Minutes, instead of leading off with the day’s top story. However, in an apparent recent tweak, the latest editions of the show have started with a focus on the day’s headlines before delving into the longer pieces.

An insider noted the show may change as it matures but reiterated that “CBS News is committed to the show and franchise,” with the network making programming investments, including expanding CBS Evening News+ to one hour.

Saturday Start: Lara Trump returns to Fox News this Saturday as her primetime show, My View with Lara Trump, debuts at 9 p.m. ET, featuring big-picture analysis and interviews with thought leaders. Saturday’s show will include Attorney General Pam Bondi, United States Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

New Book: Sticking with Fox News, America’s Newsroom co-anchor and co-host of The Five Dana Perino will publish her fourth book via Fox News Book on April 22, titled “I Wish Someone Had Told Me: The Best Advice For Building A Great Career And A Meaningful Life.”

Perino said about her latest book, “There’s an insatiable desire for career and life advice, and one thing I’ve learned in 20 years of mentoring is that I certainly don’t have all the answers.”

She added, “Enter my trusted friends, colleagues, and mentors with a wide range of experiences to help put together this one-stop shop with all the latest career and life advice in one place. Fresh, convenient, and efficient, we’re here to help you decide what you want to do and how you want to live.”

Awards Season: NBC News is reveling in its own glow as it won the prestigious 2024 George Polk National Television Reporting Award for an enterprise team investigation titled “Dealing the Dead.”  In collaboration with NBC Nightly News and Noticias Telemundo, the NBCNews.com series revealed how unclaimed bodies were dissected and leased out for medical research without people’s consent or their families’ knowledge—leading to the practice ending after reporters shared their findings.

CBS News is also basking in the awards glow as it was a big winner at the 77th Annual Writers Guild of America Awards. The Tiffany Network won awards for News Script—Analysis, Feature, or Commentary for “The Resistance”, written by Scott Pelley, Nicole Young, and Kristin Steve, which aired on 60 Minutes, and for News Script—Regularly Scheduled Bulletin or Breaking Report for the “Willie Mays Tribute” written by Gerald Mazza for CBS Newspath.

CBS News also won two radio awards. These include Radio/Audio News Script—Regularly Scheduled, Bulletin, or Breaking Report for “Passages: Three Women Who Made A Difference,” written by Gail Lee, and the award for Radio/Audio News Script—Analysis, Feature, or Commentary for “Charles Osgood Remembered,” also written by Lee.

On-air Goodbyes: Two CNN anchors wished their respective time-slot audiences goodbye, albeit for different reasons. On Sunday on CNN This Morning Weekend, Amara Walker signed off from the network after 10 years of anchoring on CNN and CNN International. “To my viewers in the U.S. and around the world, thank you for entrusting me to bring you the news. It has been an incredible privilege,” Walker said.

Meanwhile, Kasie Hunt signed off from CNN This Morning on Friday, but she remains with the network, moving to a more bearable timeslot of 4 p.m. ET as the anchor of the new political program, The Arena with Kasie Hunt. Hunt’s transition is part of CNN’s latest weekday daytime program revamp, set to kick off on Monday, March 3.
