Ticker: NBC News Launches ‘Reporting for America’ Marketing Campaign

Top of the Ticker: Looking to visually assert its split from MSNBC and CNBC, NBC News launched a new marketing campaign, “Reporting for America.” The campaign, appearing on-air and on social media, focuses on the news division’s core mission: fact-based, widely accessible journalism.

In a note to staffers, NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Conde stated Americans are not disinterested in news, but are hungry for civil discourse and trustworthy reporting.

“Exactly what NBC News stands for,” Conde said.

Second try: This week, CNN debuted its new All Access subscription tier, featuring a selection of live channels, a library of CNN Original Series and CNN Films, day-of catch-up content, video-on-demand programming, as well as all text, audio, and video content available on CNN.com and the CNN app.

In its second attempt at launching a streaming product, available for $6.99 a month or $69.99 annually, CNN’s CEO Mark Thompson, in an interview with Brian Stelter, said, “It’s not CNN ‘extra’ or ‘plus,’ it’s CNN.” He added that CNN All Access carries “all the programs you expect to get from CNN.”

Deep Concerns: A BBC journalist of Vietnamese origin has had his passport and ID withheld by the Vietnamese government. The news organization says it is “deeply concerned” about the journalist’s well-being, as they have been unable to leave Vietnam for some time and faced “multiple days of questioning.” It is “urging Vietnamese authorities to allow the journalist to leave immediately and return to work by providing the renewed passport.”

Strong debut: Although it is not widely available yet, NBC News Studios’ latest podcast series, Dead Certain: The Martha Moxley Murder, is already the top series on Apple Podcasts. Premiering on Tuesday, November 4, the podcast hosted by Andrew Goldman revisits the 1975 killing of Moxley, who was 15 years old, with unprecedented access, new investigative material, and exclusive interviews.

Revolving Door: MSNBC announced two appointments this week. Former Washington, D.C. senior producer for CBS Mornings, Kate Farrell, is joining the network as deputy Washington bureau chief. She has had previous stints at BBC World News America and CNN. The network also announced that Cindy Galli has joined as a legal affairs director. Prior to MSNBC, she spent 14 years at ABC News, most recently as the executive producer of ABC News’ investigative unit.

Meanwhile, ABC News announced that Sophie Flay is joining the network as a correspondent and overnight anchor of World News Now and Good Morning America First Look. Flay was previously a general assignment reporter for ABC7/KABC-TV in Los Angeles.

Finally, Julie Tsirkin has an expanded role at NBC News. In addition to covering Capitol Hill as a correspondent, Tsirkin will also cover the White House beat.
