Week of Jan. 27 Evening News Ratings: ABC News and NBC News End the Month With Gains

ABC News and NBC News ended January with gains among total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo. The last week of the month saw news of the Washington, D.C. plane crash drive viewers to World News Tonight with David Muir and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.

Meanwhile, the reimagined CBS Evening News got off to a slow start with declines in both measured categories for the week of Jan. 27. WNT remained the most-watched evening news program on all of broadcast and cable.

Note: The weekly averages of ABC World News Tonight, NBC Nightly News, and CBS Evening News are based on four days (Monday – Thursday). Friday’s (1/31/2025) broadcasts were retitled to WNT-ABC, NBC Nitely News, and CBS Evening Nws. These broadcasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages.

ABC’s newscast averaged 8.304 million total viewers and 1.137 A25-54 viewers for a gain of +3% in the former category and a flat result in the latter compared to the previous week. Looking at its performance alongside the same week in 2024 (the week beginning Jan. 29), WNT rose +3% in total viewers and +4% in the demo.

NBC Nightly News took the No. 2 spot with 6.926 million total viewers and 1.093 million demo viewers. Week-to-week, the newscast dipped -1% in the former category and rose +4% in the latter. (Notable: Nightly News led WNT in the demo on the Thursday following the D.C. plane crash.) Year-to-year, Nightly News was up by +3% in total viewers and +8% in the demo.

The CBS Evening News rolled out its new format to 4.812 million total viewers and 688,000 demo viewers. The first week with the new dual anchor format consisting of Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson week saw the broadcast fall -2% in the former category and -4% in the latter compared to the previous week. Relative to 2024, it was down by -4% in both total viewers and the demo.
