On Shillington’s graphic design course, we’re keenly focused on helping students find employers and freelance clients. One element of that is showing how versatile you are, and mockups place a key part in demonstrating that. Mockups place your design work in different contexts, from digital screens to product packaging and posters to vinyl record covers. But actually, say, printing a physical poster, placing it in situ, and photographing it perfectly, is a huge amount of work. Mockup templates, in contrast, allow you to just craft your design and drop it into the template.
Similarly, if you’re creating designs for digital devices, there are mockup templates that show what they would look like on a phone screen, a tablet, a laptop, a smartwatch and more. There are also mockup templates that place your work on book covers, magazine pages, stationery, business cards… the list is almost endless.
That might sound like ‘cheating’, but don’t worry: it’s an acceptable industry practice, not just for students but even for experienced graphic designers when they’re pitching ideas. After all, in most cases, it’s your graphic design work people are interested in, not your photography skills. And mockup templates simply allow you to showcase that more quickly and efficiently.
