John L. Humphries, a veteran of 18 years at Hearst Television and more than four decades in broadcast TV, will retire later this year from his current post of president and general manager of WYFF in Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, South Carolina and Asheville, North Carolina, television market.
Before joining WYFF in 2016, Humphries served four years as president and general manager of Hearst owned WGAL serving the Lancaster-Harrisburg-Lebanon-York, Pennsylvania market.
His 2016 appointment as president and general manager marked a return to WYFF 4 for Humphries, where he served for six years as general sales manager before working at WGAL.
“John is a consummate broadcaster who led two of Hearst Television’s most honored and successful brands. He built upon the culture of excellence in journalism and community service in both markets,” said Michael J. Hayes, Hearst Television president. “He leaves a powerful legacy of leadership and a strong foundation for the future of WYFF 4.”
“Over the past 45 years it has been my privilege to serve alongside scores of passionate local broadcasters, all of whom were dedicated to making a difference in their communities,” Humphries said. “I am beyond blessed to have had the unique opportunity to conclude my career in leadership roles at two extraordinary Hearst Television properties.”
Before joining Hearst Television in 2006 at WYFF 4, Humphries was director of sales for WBTV in Charlotte, N.C. and held the same position at WSPA-WASV in the Greenville-Spartanburg market. He began his career at Charlotte’s WSOC, initially as a production specialist and later as a sports reporter and anchor, before moving to sales positions there.
