South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball coach and Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer Dawn Staley took time out of her presser with the media to call out local journalists, TV stations included, for the coverage they provide.
Staley’s top ranked team had just lost to UConn in its bid for the National Championship when she made sure to mention how local journalists, including Fox affiliate WACH and WIS in Columbia, South Carolina, are so important to what she does.
At around 4:46 in the video below, Staley took a moment before leaving to thank the media for doing their jobs and how fair the locals are to the team in their coverage.
“I really, really, really, really, really appreciate all of you all,” she said. “Just the coverage that you give us (and) the support that you give us.”
Staley has been named Naismith Coach of the Year four times, AP Coach of the Year two times and SEC Coach of the Year seven times.
While Staley went on to say that a strong local media could have a positive effect on women’s basketball, we’d like to think her sentiments apply to all beats.
