NBC News is conducting a second round of layoffs this year, with the latest cuts resulting from the upcoming spinoff of Versant.

The company announced the layoffs on Wednesday, with the cuts affecting nearly 7% of NBC News operations and representing 2% of the NBCU News Group workforce.

The cuts were spread across different divisions within the news network, according to a report from The Wrap.

The decision to lay off staffers comes as the news organization is no longer supporting the newsgathering efforts of two news networks, and it is also influenced by the current economic climate affecting the media industry.

MSNBC, alongside CNBC, began operating independently of NBC News on October 6. Currently, only MSNBC and CNBC’s DC news operations are still affiliated with NBC News, with that support expected to conclude this coming weekend.

MSNBC is also in the process of relocating from NBC News headquarters, 30 Rock, in Manhattan to a temporary office space that includes studio facilities set to come online in the upcoming weeks. This will coincide with the network name change from MSNBC to MS NOW, accompanied by a new logo that drops the Peacock branding associated with the NBC brand.

Meanwhile, NBC News is supporting its impacted employees by providing them with a severance package and offering outplacement services. In addition, they will receive 60 days’ notice and subsidized benefits support.

Affected employees are also being encouraged to apply for the company’s nearly 140 open positions, which include a dozen of the eliminated positions being repurposed as new roles.

NBC News laid off nearly 40 staffers earlier this year across various departments. Those cuts affected nearly 3% of its 1,500-employee workforce at that time.

NBCU News Group chairman Cesar Conde recently shared a memo with staffers outlining the news outlets’ priorities post-spinoff, which include the launch of a new subscription product later this year and expanding its Sports Hub.
