Marvel at the rocking new Thor logo – but which one?

How Marvel won hearts at Comic Con with not one but two logos for Thor: Love and Thunder – plus a whole load of Desert Chrome.

Undoubtedly the biggest news out of Comic Con 2019 was the news Natalie Portman would be wielding Mjolnir in new Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder. Also of little doubt was the announcement got some extra oomph from the Taika Waititi-helmed movie’s rocking new title and logo.

Amidst an overload of film titles and familiar branding, the logo for the fourth Thor movie stood out not just by bucking the trend but doing it with class. The Desert Chrome type went down well with MCU fans in Hall H and online, evoking the prog rock excessiveness which Waititi introduced to the franchise in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok.

Comparisons were drawn to old Capcom titles, hair metal albums and Saturday morning TV classics like He-Man and Thundercats.

Of course, not everyone was impressed, with Microsoft Paint funster Jim’ll Paint It saying it was a bastardisation of Desert Chrome.

“The desert chrome revival has been and gone,” he tweeted. “And this isn’t even well done. Horrible digital gradients. Good desert chrome should have a hand painted feel.”

It should be noted though this logo isn’t the final product, and there may already be another contender upon the film’s eventual 2021 release. The version seen by attendees of Marvel’s panel at Comic Con saw a very differently coloured version of the logo on display:

Both logos look good, and perhaps in the multiverse one reality will get the version tweeted online and another will get the version unveiled behind Taika, Portman and Chris Hemsworth.

Whichever one Marvel ultimate-ly pick, it’s no way going to be as much of an eyesore as the Loki logo revealed yesterday:

Graphic design is obviously someone’s passion over at Disney.
