It might seem quaint now, but some Americans still remember the Obama administration’s 2010 “Mayogate.”
The president stopped into Jerry’s Famous in Miami Beach and reportedly ordered a corned beef sandwich with mayonnaise—a culinary outrage, especially in a Jewish delicatessen. Fortunately, fact-checking by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency set the record straight: Obama had actually ordered his sandwich with mustard.
Why was Mayogate even a thing? Because mayonnaise is a big deal in this country. According to a February YouGov survey, 77% of American homes have a jar of the stuff and 67% of consumers say they like or love it.
