Bill Maher has accepted a meeting with President Donald Trump.

The host of HBO’s weekly political show Real Time with Bill Maher—which re-airs on CNN on Saturday nights at 8 p.m. ET—announced the news over the weekend on his Club Random podcast. 

Maher informed listeners that the musician—and recent Real Time and Club Random guest—Kid Rock invited him to meet the president. “Kid Rock was here a couple of weeks ago, and he said, ‘I want you to meet Trump,’” Maher explained. “He said, ‘I’m gonna take you to the White House.’ So now we’re gonna do that.”

No time and date has been set for Maher’s trip to the White House. But he noted that he would not wear all black like Ukrainian president, Vlodormyr Zelenskyy. Instead, he plans to dress in formal attire as a “sign of respect.”

Maher has frequently been critical of the president and his policies, and frequently joked about Trump before he took office. In 2013, Trump sued the Real Time host for $5 million over a joke Maher made on The Tonight Show—a lawsuit that he later dropped.

This meeting could invite blowback from liberal circles. That’s what happened when MSNBC’s morning team of Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski met with the president right after the election. The show saw its ratings plummet following their meeting, but viewers have returned in recent months.

Maher seems to recognize that possible downside to sitting down with Trump. “There will be lots of people on the left who will be like, ‘How dare you talk to this man,’” he said on Club Random. 

Since joining CNN’s weekend lineup in March 2024, Maher’s encore episodes have been a ratings standout for the network. Real Time regularly finishes as network’s top show on Saturday nights in total viewers. 

Meanwhile, Have I Got News for You, which follows Real Time at 9 p.m., has been a reliable performer in the Adults 25-54 demo. Together, the two shows have brought a lighter take to the network’s political coverage.
