A total of 24 French-speaking African countries will be able to access Netflix through their pay TV subscription services as part of a strategic distribution agreement between the streaming service and French media conglomerate Canal+.
Canal+ becomes the first pay TV operator in that region of Africa to distribute Netflix under such an agreement. Iconic shows like Stranger Things, La Casa de Papel, Lupin, Emily in Paris, and Squid Game will be made available alongside popular African productions like Blood & Water, Young Famous & African, Unseen, King of Boys, Anikulapo, Blood Sisters, and Kings of Joburg.
“A few years after our distribution agreement in France and Poland, I am delighted to extend our historic partnership with Netflix to Africa,” said Pascale Chabert, chief content acquisition officer of Canal+, in a statement. “Our millions of African subscribers will benefit from a unique offer, bringing together the best of Canal+ and Netflix content in a joint package. This new agreement demonstrates Canal+’s ability to extend its unique super-aggregation model beyond the European continent.”
Emma Lloyd, vice president of partnerships, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) at Netflix, added, “We’re thrilled about this extension of our partnership with Canal+, which will allow us to reach even more people across French-speaking African countries. It’s a big win for entertainment fans and part of our ongoing mission to make the member experience even better.”
Canal+ is tightening its grip in the African market. Already a well-known and established name in West Africa, it is now establishing its presence in eastern and southern Africa, courtesy of its recent acquisition of Multichoice, the largest pay TV service in English- and Portuguese-speaking Africa.
The French-based company’s media empire encompasses broadcast, production, distribution, and aggregation.
Operating in 52 countries worldwide, Canal+ has 26.9 million subscribers worldwide, with over 400 million monthly active users on its over-the-top and videostreaming platforms.
