The adage goes, there’s a first time for everything. CBS and MTV are set to experience a first between them, as the iconic MTV Video Music Awards will air live on CBS for the first time Sunday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m. ET.
The event will also stream on Paramount+.
The VMAs, an MTV staple for more than 40 years, will still be simulcast on the network, with the one-hour live preshow airing across the Paramount Media Networks, including BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, and VH1.
Nominations, performers, and additional details will be announced closer to the show, which will take place at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y.
Last year’s awards delivered its biggest multinetwork audience in four years, but the effects of cord-cutting as more consumers opt out of paying for cable may have pushed the event toward its linear sibling.
Linear networks are transforming themselves into destinations for marquee live events, sporting or otherwise, in an effort to retain viewers, maintain their carriage fees, and snatch up crucial ad dollars.
