Here’s a sequel to a blockbuster that won’t be happening. On Saturday, Vice President Kamala Harris accepted an offer from CNN to headline a second presidential debate, scheduled for Oct. 23. Later that same day, though, former President Donald Trump appeared to reject the proposed rematch with his Democratic rival.

Speaking at a North Carolina rally—where he studiously avoided mentioning the name of embattled gubernatorial candidate, Mark RobinsonTrump told the crowd that it was “too late” for another debate given that early voting had already started in some states.

“Now she wants to do a debate right before the election with CNN because she’s losing badly,” the former president said. “But it’s like a fighter who goes into the ring and gets knocked out. The first thing he says is, ‘I want a rematch!’”

Harris, of course, was widely seen as the winner of their previous ABC News-hosted match-up, which took place on Sept. 10 in Rocky Balboa’s hometown of Philadelphia. Crashing the spin room after the debate, Trump declared himself the victor—but even then remained non-committal on a second bout.

It looks like the Harris campaign is planning to keep the pressure on over the next week. NBC News reports that Democrats are mounting a Marty McFly-like message campaign suggesting that Trump is too “chicken” to face Harris again.

“Join me on the debate stage,” Harris told Trump via reporters over the weekend. “There’s more to talk about. The voters of America deserve to hear the conversations that I think we should be having on substance, on issues, on policies. We should have another one before Election Day.”

For the record, prior to the Sept. 10 debate, Trump had expressed interest in debating Harris on Fox News, and the network reissued its pitch for a second presidential debate following the Philadelphia event. NBC News has also signaled its interest in hosting both candidates, while CBS News currently has an Oct. 1 debate scheduled for vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D. Vance in New York City.

CNN previously hosted the June 27 debate between Trump and President Joe Biden that ultimately led to Biden dropping out of the race. It’s also the only major media outlet to have secured an interview with Harris since she took over the top of the ticket. Last week, the Democratic candidate participated in her longest post-debate interview, a Unite for America rally with Oprah Winfrey that was livestreamed on YouTube.
