One day after announcing a programming overhaul that saw Joy Reid exiting the network, MSNBC is said to to be instituting widespread layoffs. In a joint statement posted to social media, the WGA East and MSNBC Union claim that the network intends to cut 99 union employees across nine different shows.

“This devastating news comes after the slow, painful trickle of announcements regarding a near-total overhaul of the network’s broadcast line-up,” the statement reads.

A source at MSNBC indicates to TVNeswer that personnel are being reallocated for the programs that will join the schedule starting in April. Additionally, new roles will first be posted internally so current employees can reapply and more positions are expected to be made available over the next few months.

The two unions criticized the reapplication process in its statement, saying: “The MSNBC Union demands the company not lay off any of the employees it has slated to be laid off but rather reassign them as needed.”

The programming overhaul marks the beginning of Rebecca Kutler‘s tenure as MSNBC’s new president. In addition to The ReidOut, Alex Wagner Tonight and The Katie Phang Show have been cancelled, although both Wagner and Phang are remaining with the network in new roles.

Joining the lineup in April will be a new 7 p.m. ET show anchored by The Weekend trio of Symone Sanders-Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez. Meanwhile, Jen Psaki inherits Wagner’s former 9 p.m. slot.

Ahead of her final newscast on Monday, Reid admitted to “feeling guilt” about ReidOut staffers losing their jobs. She declared herself “proud of the little team that could.”

MSNBC is the latest news network to shed staffers in the early months of 2025. In Januayr, CNN announced that it would cut 6% of its workforce amidst a digital pivot and its own programming revamp. That same month, NBC News trimmed its staff by 40 employees. MSNBC will be cleaved from the NBCUniversal News Group when it joins SpinCo—the spin-off company that will house many of NBCUniversal’s cable assets—later this year.

The MSNBC Union and the WGA East closed their statement with an urgent call to action directed at the network and other news organizations. “The news of layoffs comes against the backdrop of the President of the United States making direct threats against MSNBC, among other news outlets, and at a time when it has never been more crucial to have a fully staffed newsroom to cover a democracy under attack.”
