Sebastião Salgado returns to the spotlight with Glaciers, a powerful exhibition curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado and hosted at the Forte di Bard from April 24 to September 27, 2026.

Nearly one year after his passing, this exhibition stands as both a tribute and a warning—bringing together 54 large-format photographs that document one of the most breathtaking yet endangered ecosystems on Earth: glaciers.

A Monumental Tribute to Ice and Time

Known worldwide for his dramatic black-and-white imagery, Salgado devoted the later years of his career to documenting pristine environments. In Glaciers, his lens captures frozen landscapes across the globe—from Antarctica to Canada, Patagonia to the Himalayas, and South Georgia to Russia.

Each photograph is rich in contrast and texture, transforming ice into sculptural forms while revealing the silent erosion of these ancient masses.

The exhibition also includes:

  • video tribute to Salgado
  • An extensive biographical section
  • Scientific insights bridging photography and environmental research

Art Meets Climate Urgency

Beyond its visual power, Glaciers confronts one of the most urgent issues of our time: climate change.

Scientific monitoring since the 1960s has shown a continuous and significant reduction in glacier mass, leading to the disappearance of many glaciers worldwide. This loss is not only environmental but also cultural—these landscapes have inspired centuries of art and literature.

Glaciers play a crucial role in:

  • Regulating the global climate
  • Supporting the hydrological cycle
  • Providing drinking water to over 2 billion people
  • Sustaining two-thirds of global irrigated agriculture

The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on their responsibility toward preserving these fragile ecosystems.

A Dialogue Between Art and Science

A distinctive feature of the exhibition is its interdisciplinary approach.

Scientific contributions are curated by Michele Freppaz from the University of Turin, offering deeper insights into glaciology and environmental science.

The exhibition also includes:

  • tactile and inclusive path designed by Dieci Occhi
  • Accessibility features developed in collaboration with the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired
  • A curated experience combining visual storytelling and scientific education

This makes Glaciers not only an artistic journey but also an educational and inclusive one.
