This is a rare opportunity to join a small, influential team inside The Economist Group at a pivotal moment of change and acceleration. If you are a Designer interested in data and want to work on projects that drive meaningful, real-world change then read on…

Role Details

You will join Signal Noise. An innovation practice within Economist Impact – a global client partner organisation within The Economist Group. With a rich heritage in data visualisation, we create digital products, services, and stories in and about complex, data-rich environments from Smart Cities to Industrial IoT and Finance. We aim to change behaviour by having a measurable impact on people. As part of The Economist Group we punch above our weight for a small studio, working with large international organizations on critical projects.

As an information designer, you’ll work alongside expert practitioners in policy and economic research, data-design and analytics, media strategy and content production. Operating as part of cross-functional teams, you’ll provide design thinking, informative layouts and inspiring data visualisations to support and collaborate with the expertise around you.

This is a creative, and collaborative, role. On the one hand, you are seamlessly marrying visual design aspects that delight and inspire with the functional features and usable aspects that a user might need to understand the data and drive value from the project.

Challenges you will tackle in this role include:

– Transforming unique and highlighly complex data sets into actionable and insightful interactions
– Executing creative concepts across a wide range of platforms and media from websites, analysis tools, interactive event installations to social media and print.

The purpose of this role:
Information designers at Signal Noise dive deep into the data to surface key information, attributes and insights in order to make seemingly complex data simple to digest and understand. If you are succeeding in this role, your work will strike the perfect balance of style and substance, driving impact through surfacing information in engaging and innovative ways for world leaders and policymakers.

Activities you will tackle include:
Collaborating on compelling creative propositions and concepts
Compiling data and insights to frame a project’s vision, structure and approach.
Collaborate with development teams to ensure efficient and effective implementation of work.
Staying up to date with industry trends and best practices
Adjusting concepts and approach as data, user and business needs change.

Are you…
Curious about what makes people tick? This role is all about people. We are looking for somebody that will be observant and tuned in to what the users and stakeholders most need from the data.

Fuelled by grit? As the saying goes, “Average players want to be left alone.” We work on ourselves constantly, and we need somebody who is not only happy to take feedback, but thrives on it.

Ambitious? We are working hard to cement our place within the wider organisation. We need somebody who will see a setback as just another opportunity.

What we’re after…

We have a candid, casual and respectful culture. We communicate often and openly. We try hard to improve all of the things all of the time. We are the literal definition of WIP!

The design team at Signal Noise are passionate, curious and determined. So you’re probably going to fit right in if you:
a) Talk incessantly about your job because you just… love it.
b) Constantly want to be better at it and;
b) Ask yourself things like ‘how did they do that?’ and ‘why does that work so well?’ and ‘how could we make this better?’
c) Think of what you do as a part of who you are, and you’re proud of that.

Skill/Attributes Required

We’re looking for…
A keen interest in making data look beautiful
Example projects powered by or inspired by data in your portfolio
Examples of when you have dug around in a dataset and your ideas/methods
We work mostly in digital formats so some digital design experience is a must
