Kimberly Cheatle, U.S. Secret Service Director, has resigned. This resignation is in the wake of the recent assassination attempt against former president Donald Trump.

A hearing followed the assassination attempt, in which political leaders on both sides of the aisle expressed discontent with Cheatle’s testimony. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer of Kentucky said, “The American people have questions. They deserve answers. Congress deserves answers. You were subpoenaed today to provide answers, and, ma’am, you did not do that.”

Jointly, Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Comer released a letter calling on Cheatle to resign. The letter stated, “Today, you failed to provide answers to basic questions regarding that stunning operational failure and to reassure the American people that the Secret Service has learned its lessons and begun to correct its systemic blunders and failures.”

At the hearing, Cheatle stated, “The Secret Service’s solemn mission is to protect our nation’s leaders. On July 13th, we failed. As the Director of the United States Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security lapse.”

Cheatle says the Secret Service is cooperating with several ongoing investigations.
