Important national and international news resulted in the three morning news shows experiencing no declines in total viewership for the week of June 9.
The ICE protests taking place in Los Angeles, the news of a tragic airplane crash in India, and the growing Middle East crisis between Israel and Iran all contributed to the increased viewership engagement across ABC News’ Good Morning America, NBC News’ Today, and CBS News’ CBS Mornings.
According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, GMA averaged 2.598 million total viewers and 478,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo for the week of June 9. Compared to the previous week, ABC News’ morning show was flat in total viewers but had gains of +4% in the demo. Looking at its performance to the same week in 2024 (June 10), GMA was down by -3% in total viewers and by -2% in the demo.
Today finished in second place in total viewers but remained the No. 1 show in the demo, with 2.487 million and 553,000 viewers, respectively, for the just concluded week. The broadcast saw gains of +2% in total viewers and +6% in the A25-54 demo compared to the previous week. There was some breathing room for Today as it stretched its lead over GMA by adding another 10,000 demo viewers, extending the difference between the two shows to 75,000 demo viewers. Looking at how it performed during the same week in 2024, Today was down by -4% in total viewers but had gains of +3% in the demo—the only morning show with year-over-year gains in either of the measured categories.
CBS Mornings had 1.791 million total viewers and 247,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo. Compared to the previous week, CBS News’ morning show saw gains of +1% in total viewers but fell by -13% in the demo—the only morning show to experience a week-to-week decline. During the same period in 2024, CBS Mornings experienced a -7% decline in total viewers and a more worrisome -36% decline in the demo.
