Madera Community Hospital in California is notifying just over 150,000 individuals that their personal, financial, and medical information was compromised in a data breach.

A not-for-profit community healthcare provider serving Madera County and surrounding areas, Madera Community Hospital provides emergency services, surgical services, acute care, diagnostic imaging, and specialized medical programs.

The incident, the hospital says in an incident notice, occurred in May 2025, when hackers accessed its network for two days and likely exfiltrated certain files.

According to the hospital, after identifying files that were potentially exfiltrated in the attack, it engaged with experts and a data-review firm for analysis.

“We received the data-review results in April 2026 and have been working since then to ensure we have accurate contact information for notifying potentially impacted individuals,” Madera Community Hospital’s notice (PDF) reads.

The impacted data, it says, includes names, contact information, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, account credentials, financial account information, treatment and health insurance information, and limited biometric information.

“But not every person had each of those elements impacted, and we have not found any evidence that such information was shared or otherwise released publicly,” the hospital says.

In mid-July, the hospital started notifying the potentially impacted individuals of the data breach, and informed the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that 150,810 people were affected.

According to Madera Community Hospital, the extortion group that was responsible for the attack and demanded a ransom payment ultimately withdrew its demand, claiming it did not want to harm patients.

“We worked with third-party experts to address this event, perform an investigation into the unauthorized activity, and further secure our systems to protect information. We also notified law enforcement,” the hospital says.
