Amazon Casts Benedict Cumberbatch to Turn Absurd Reviews into Theater

Amazon is leaning further into the comedy of contrast for the holiday season, enlisting two-time Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch to deliver dramatic readings of its most absurd customer reviews for the second chapter of its “Five Star Theater” campaign.

The new ads mirror the format that drove buzz in last year’s debut featuring actor Adam Driver. Cumberbatch, sitting in a leather armchair beside a flickering fireplace and Christmas tree and surrounded by Amazon boxes, performs real five-star reviews as if it’s a one-man show.

The humor comes from the juxtaposition between Cumberbatch’s gravitas and the text itself, which was curated using internal AI tools to find the most oddly specific reviews on the platform.

Standout lines include a heartfelt ode to a Bissell portable carpet cleaner that cleaned the mess after a family’s food poisoning disaster, and a testimonial praising a boyfriend-shaped pillow for being the ideal cuddle companion that doesn’t snore or fart.

The campaign was produced in-house and directed by Mike Diva of Lord Danger.

Ads will appear across Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and streaming platforms including Disney+/Hulu and Paramount through Dec. 22. The campaign will also receive high-profile placements during Thursday Night Football on Nov. 13, the Black Friday NFL game on Nov. 28, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, as well as partnerships with podcasts including Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce and A Verry Merry Iconic Podcast with Danny Pellegrino and Jenna Brister.

“Five Star Theater” is part of Amazon’s broader “Every Thing for Every Holiday” platform, which also brings back its popular 2023 holiday ad “Joy Ride.”

Additional creative this season highlights the breadth of Amazon’s gift offerings. In “Your Old Room,” a young woman returns home for the holidays and discovers her dad has turned her old room into a gym, which inspires her to get him less revealing workout clothes.
