Ray-Ban has named A$AP Rocky as its first creative director.
The Harlem rapper and fashion innovator, born Rakim Mayers, will guide creative projects and shape the future of the brand’s image and design. He will kick off his appointment with a “Blacked Out Collection,” a redesign of Ray-Ban’s iconic sunglasses shapes with a new ultra-black lens, slated to release in April.
Ray-Ban Studios was founded in 2016 as a creative hub celebrating the stories of musicians and artists. The brand has also partnered with producer Arca, singer-songwriter Peggy Gou, and electronic DJ and producer Honey Dijon.
Ray-Ban President Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio told ADWEEK that the partnership with Rocky, who was recently acquitted from a gun assault case, has been nearly a year in the making.
“Ray-Ban is embedded within the heart of culture, music, fashion, and film,” he said in a statement. “Part of the strategy is for Rocky to challenge us in the way we see product helping to develop new shapes, styles, and disruptive designs.”
The exec said that Rocky has visited Ray-Ban’s factory in Agordo, Italy and that he will work with the brand’s retail team to concept new store openings and design. He will also get involved with the One Sight Foundation, an initiative from Ray-Ban parent company EssilorLuxottica aimed at eliminating uncorrected poor vision through philanthropy, partnerships, and raising awareness.
“I’ve always admired Ray-Ban’s ability to stay true to its roots while constantly evolving,” said Rocky in a statement. “I’m excited to be part of the strong heritage and develop the next chapter for an iconic brand like Ray-Ban.”
In addition to expanding its cultural imprint, Ray-Ban has also dabbled in the tech space with the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.
The wearable, AI-powered tech, which enables wearers to capture photos and videos, listen to music, make calls and texts using voice commands, and more, appeared in the tech giant’s Super Bowl 59 ad starring Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth, and Kris Jenner.
