Bigger than the Cintiq 16 and cheaper than the Cintiq Pro, the Cintiq 22 is Wacom’s new tablet aiming to be best for beginners.
The year began with Wacom releasing a cheaper Cintiq alternative with the launch of the Cintiq 16, followed up now by another budget offering in the form of the Wacom Cintiq 22.
Note the lack of a Pro in both of those names; like its predecessor the Cintiq 22 is aimed at students, enthusiasts and anyone else without the budget for a Cintiq Pro (although such folk would do well in looking at our Best Wacom Cintiq alternatives guide).
That 22 inch display makes it bigger than rival budget tablets from the likes of Ugee and Huion, but like those Chinese makes it doesn’t offer the best resolution and output.
Despite the bigger screen, the Cintiq 22 actually has the exact same display specs as the 16: an HD 1,980 x 1,080 resolution and 72% of NTSC colour along with 96% sRGB.
Both budget displays are, like the Pro, compatible with Wacom’s Pro Pen 2 stylus and its 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity (most Cintiq alternatives support only 2,048 levels). You can slip the Pen on the 22’s side, as shown in this photo comparing the two 2019 models.
The Cintiq connects to your Mac or PC with a single cable that splits into HDMI, USB 2.0 and power connectors. It also comes with a stand as shown below; with the Cintiq 16 this was an add-on bought separately. The 16 remains Wacom’s budget option for creatives on the go, with the new 22 perfect for those looking to stay inside and work on a broader kind of canvas.
Note that for either model Wacom’s ExpressKey remote remains an extra purchase, costing €99.90/£89.99 without shipping.
The Cintiq 22 will be priced at €999,90 EUR and £869.99 GBP. It’s available now at the Wacom eStore and can be pre-ordered at select resellers. This price tag comes at €400/£340 higher than the Wacom Cintiq 16.
