The much-anticipated meet-up between the Democratic and GOP presidential candidates takes place tonight on ABC News in Philadelphia, beginning at 9 p.m. ET.
In anticipation of the ABC News Presidential Debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, the news outlet gave a walkaround tour of where all the action will take place inside the National Constitution Center in downtown Philadelphia.
Senior congressional correspondent Rachel Scott took viewers inside the debate studio, showing how compact an area it will be with no audience or campaign staffers allowed inside. Harris and Trump will just be six feet apart and near the debate’s moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis.
A giant countdown clock will be set directly above the moderators, showing the allotted time each candidate is allowed to speak. The color on the clock will switch from green at the beginning of their two-minute window to yellow when there are 15 seconds left and red when their time is up. The moderators’ table will also include a timer and television feed to ensure the rules are followed.
Scott also gave a tour of the spin room, where all the invited journalists would report during the debate and all the political jousting would occur once the debate concluded. Expected surrogates inside the spin room include Republican vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance and Pennsylvania Governor Joe Shapiro.
CNN’s Hadas Gold reports that a pool of reporters from major news organizations will be “able to hear and report on what both sides are saying” inside the debate studio. This little wrinkle was absent during CNN’s presidential debate between Trump and President Joe Biden in late June.
Tuesday night’s debate, which will be simulcast on various news outlets, will air across linear and digital platforms, including ABC, ABC News Live, Disney+, and Hulu. The main event will be preceded by a Race for the White House special, airing at 8 p.m. and anchored by Martha Raddatz, Jonathan Karl, Mary Bruce, and Scott.
