Funny reviews on Amazon have developed a cult following of sorts, and even spawned their own community on Reddit, so the ecommerce giant decided to hop on the bandwagon, with help from a two-time Academy Award-nominated actor.
Adam Driver is narrating some of Amazon’s “funniest and most iconic” five-star product reviews for the company’s “5-Star Theatre” campaign in the U.S., leading up to Black Friday week.
Driver gives actual reviews for products including a banana slicer, Elf on the Shelf, and a massage gun “a voice worthy of the customers who wrote them,” lending his dramatic chops to the spots, which were produced in the format of a one-man show.
The actor said in a statement: “What’s more compelling than the deeply personal, yet very public, Amazon review? Immortalized readings of the marriage saving qualities of a banana slicer? The nuances of rubber duck collecting? Nothing says the holidays like grabbing a glass of something and telling people what you really think. Merry Christmas to myself.”
“5-Star Theatre” is an extension of Amazon’s ongoing “Joy Is Shared” campaign, which demonstrates how the ecommerce platform enables its customers to create and share joy during the holiday season.
Earlier this month, its first holiday ad depicted a janitor at a theater who unexpectedly gets the chance to show off his talent on stage.
The campaign was produced by Amazon’s internal creative team, and 10 different 30-second and 60-second spots will run across paid social media (including Meta, Snapchat, and TikTok), premium online video (including A&E, connected TV device partners, Disney/Hulu, Fox/Tubi, Max, NBC/Peacock, Nexstar, Paramount, Samsung, Thursday Night Football on Prime Video, Vevo, and YouTube), and Amazon-owned social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
