The larger MacBook Pro gains a new, more-powerful graphics option – and you can now upgrade a Mac Pro’s storage after purchase.

Apple has quietly announced two ways to get higher performance from its flagship computers for professional creatives. The first is a new graphics chip option for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, the AMD Radeon Pro 5600M, available as a build-to-order option.

The new graphics chip costs £600/$600 more than the previous top-spec chip, the Radeon Pro 5500M. It has a much faster type of memory – HBM rather than the 5500M’s DDR6 – and Apple claims that the 5600M offers 75% better performance than the 5500M. It also says that the 5600M is 3.5x faster than the previous, 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Bigger storage for the Mac Pro

Also new is the SSD Kit for the Mac Pro. This lets you upgrade the internal storage of a Mac Pro, which when purchasing can be configured with 256GB, 1, 2, 4 or 8TB. The SSD Kit lets you put in 1, 2, 4 or 8TB instead.

Pricing has not yet been announced.
