Talk about a lucrative detour. Former President Donald Trump‘s Wednesday afternoon pit stop at the Gutfeld! studio boosted the Fox News late night show to a ratings high. Per Nielsen, 4.9 million total viewers tuned in to see Trump join host Greg Gutfeld in dissecting the day’s headlines, while the Adults 25-54 audience measured in at 744,000 viewers.
Trump taped his appearance before headlining a rally at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum, sitting alongside regular panelists Tyrus and Kat Timpf as well as special guest Emily Compagno, co-host of Outnumbered. The former president addressed the second attempt against his life at his golf club in West Palm Beach, FL.
“I always said golf is a very dangerous game,” Trump remarked, congratulating his Secret Service detail on a “great job.”
Trump also commented on his widely-panned performance in the Sept. 10 ABC News debate with Kamala Harris. “I thought I had the best debate,” he claimed, going on to criticize moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis for treating him “unfairly.” Despite those complaints, though, he doesn’t appear to have changed his mind about accepting a rematch with Harris.
Gutfeld notably declined to ask Trump about his false claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, OH were eating pets. The GOP candidate did allude to those falsehoods during his Long Island rally, stating that he intended to visit Springfield in person.
Already a late night hit, Gutfeld! saw its Wednesday numbers exceed broadcast staples like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live. It also finished ahead of primetime series like Survivor and The Golden Bachelorette. And unlike Jimmy Fallon—whose 2016 interview with Trump was the former president’s last late night appearance until now—Gutfeld was careful not to ruffle his guest’s hair.
