For seven years, the drama Vikings has been one of History’s biggest shows, and the cable network’s most successful foray into the scripted series space.
History had split Vikings sixth and final season into two parts, with Season 6’s first 10 episodes wrapping earlier this year. But in a surprise move, the show’s final 10 episodes will be premiering not on the linear cable network, but on Amazon Prime Video. Those last episodes will begin streaming during the final half season on Dec. 30 in the U.S., UK, Germany and Ireland.
Those final 10 episodes will also air on History sometime in 2021, though a specific air date has not been announced.
“Our monumental Vikings saga is coming to its conclusion, but not before you’ve had to chance to watch some of my all-time favorite episodes,” said Vikings creator Michael Hirst in a statement. “Prime Video will uniquely expose the series finale to a streaming audience first. Prepare to be astonished, and for many surprises along the way. And if you have tears to shed, then also be prepared to shed them.”
History agreed to the surprise schedule shift as the network has evolved its scripted business model. The cable network is moving away from ongoing shows and focusing instead on limited series, according to a History source (cable networks like USA have undergone a similar scripted shift). This Amazon deal also enabled the network to air History’s final season at a fraction of the cost.
Over the past decade, History was one of more than a dozen ad-supported cable networks to try their luck at creating original scripted shows, following the lead of AMC and FX. However, most of them have since retreated: of the newer networks in the space, only History, National Geographic and OWN had remained consistent players.
As for Amazon, the move will give them a draw around the holidays for existing Prime Video subscribers, while potentially convincing others to come on board. Several other streamers have lined up big events around Christmas in an effort to increased subscribers: HBO Max will air Wonder Woman 1984 on Dec. 25, the same day that Disney+ will begin streaming the next Pixar film, Soul.
