Jane Metcalfe, founder of Wired Magazine, created NEO.LIFE to explore the frontiers of biology, technology, and humanity. In 2021, Upstatement helped her build a unique brand and editorial experience. I think the art direction was really effective because it allows powerful typography and visuals to grab the readers’ attention. In a day and age where we’re bombarded with stimuli, this design succeeds at capturing my eye and making me want to read more. They use boldly contrasting or sympathetic colors to create visual interest, drama, and harmony. The typography Upstatement used for “NEO.LIFE” feels subtly digital and futuristic without being clichéd. The typography they used for the rest of the text allows for contrast and hierarchy.
