The Sundance Film Festival kicked off on Thursday, so this week has been absolutely packed with trailers as distributors try to hype movies headed to the festival that they’ve already scooped up in pre-show negotiations. I’ve included a few of the bigger films and more striking trailers here, but I’d encourage you to check out The Film Stage’s roundup if you want to see a lot more. Most of these films won’t be playing widely for some time though, so consider it a very early preview of what’s to come.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled to The Verge this week as Sundance really gets rolling: we’ll have our reviews and reports coming in from the festival throughout the show. Lately, Sundance hasn’t just been a film festival either — it’s also been a place to explore storytelling in virtual reality, so expect to see a lot more on that front too.

Tomb Raider

Someone does yell “OPEN THE TOMB!” in this trailer, in case you were wondering. There’s obviously a lot of potential here, but just like with the last trailer, this one has me worried about just how much CGI is involved — a lot of it looks like a quick time event, instead of the kind of swashbuckling adventure it ought to be. The film comes out March 16th.

The Handmaid’s Tale

Hulu put out a very dark first look at season two of The Handmaid’s Tale this week. And while it doesn’t offer up too many details about what’s coming next, it certainly indicates that the show isn’t letting up on its brutal depiction of a dystopian future — and it’ll apparently be going beyond the text of the book this year. The new season starts April 25th.

Atlanta

Donald Glover’s Atlanta is close to returning for a second season, and FX is teasing that return with one extremely stylized teaser that hits all the moody notes needed to set up the show’s return. It comes back March 1st.

Super Troopers 2

It’s been 16 years since the original Super Troopers, and the crew is back to see if they can capture that same raucous and energetic lightning in a bottle twice. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the original, and I worry that this style of loud and dumb humor won’t be quite so funny anymore — but then again, there’s a lot to like about how much they commit to some of the truly and proudly stupid moments in this trailer. The film comes out April 20th.

Heathers

I thought there was no possible way anyone could remake Heathers in today’s terrible era of school shootings and bomb threats. But the newly formed Paramount Network is going for it, turning the classic, ruthless film into a TV series that really doesn’t seem to let up on the kind of spare-no-one selfishness that made the original so brilliant. Can it do that while actually saying something and not crossing the boundary into mean-spirited? It’s definitely going to be a hard job. The show starts March 7th.

Tully

It’s been a while since we’ve had a film from Diablo Cody or Jason Reitman — the duo behind Juno — and while the two have made their share of films that divided (or just put off) audiences, it’s still worth checking out their latest, which is yet another collaboration between the two. Tully has Charlize Theron playing a tired, unappreciated mother of three, whose life seemingly starts to change after getting a nanny. It comes out April 20th.

Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot

Gus Van Sant’s latest is a star-packed biopic about cartoonist John Callahan, who after being paralyzed in a car accident, went on to become a cartoonist known for dark, boundary-pushing humor. The movie takes that dark comedy and runs with it to clearly uncomfortable places, as this trailer makes perfectly evident. It comes out May 11th.

Seeing Allred

Netflix has a new documentary coming up on women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred, who’s represented women in civil rights and harassment cases for decades now — including recent ones against Bill Cosby, Donald Trump, and Roy Moore. This documentary follows the course of her career and frames it within the context of the spate of recent harassment and assault allegations against high-profile men. The film comes out February 9th.

A Woman Captured

A Woman Captured may be one of the most startling films to play at Sundance this year. The film follows a woman named Marish who’s been enslaved for a decade in a European home. By paying off the homeowner, the filmmaker is able to get inside to film a portrait of Marish’s life — and ultimately help her escape. The movie is headed to Sundance and doesn’t appear to be set for a wide release yet.

Altered Carbon

Netflix continues to hype Altered Carbon with another big and flashy trailer this week, and it’s the first to really show off what the series is about. Netflix is clearly hoping that this will be a big one, but it’s hard to tell how the show’s going to go over from just this peek. It looks extremely produced, with tons of color and effects and impressive sets. But is there a tone and story behind it all that’s worth watching? I’m not sure yet — though at least the book it’s all based on was very well received. The show comes out February 2nd.

Britannia

Everyone’s looking for the next Game of Thrones, and this appears to be Amazon’s attempt at it. It looks big and beautiful and weirdly, well, weird and energetic for a show about the Roman army set nearly 2,000 years ago. It comes out on January 26th.
