The East Coast media world was rocked Tuesday night by the news that political journalist Olivia Nuzzi had been suspended by New York Magazine after an alleged affair with former 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Nuzzi had previously profiled Kennedy in a November issue of the Vox Media-owned publication.

Former CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy broke the news in his Status newsletter. New York later posted a note to readers on its website, describing Nuzzi’s disclosure as “a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures.” While Kennedy was unnamed in New York’s statement, sources familiar with the situation have disclosed his identity to various outlets.

“An internal review of her published work has found no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias,” the note continued. “She is currently on leave from the magazine, and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party review. We regret this violation of our readers’ trust.”

In her own statement given to The New York Times, Nuzzi characterized the relationship as “never physical” and emphasized that she never used Kennedy as a source. “I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York,” she added.

Kennedy has yet to publicly comment, but a representative told the Times: “Mr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.” After dropping out of the presidential race in August, Kennedy endorsed former President Donald Trump.

In an interview with Business Insider’s Peter Kafka, Darcy said that he “agonized” over publishing his scoop, but also felt that it illustrated a “conflict of interest” that made it an important story to tell. “It’s not because she was having a relationship with someone; it’s because it presents thorny issues for the magazine, and for her,” he noted.
