Emmrich, a longtime style and travel journalist, was most recently an assistant managing editor for the Los Angeles Times’ Lifestyle section for roughly a year after spending nearly 17 years at The New York Times as Styles editor. Emmrich will oversee Vogue.com’s digital content and report directly to editor in chief Anna Wintour.

Emmrich has also been a senior editor at Time magazine, an executive editor at SmartMoney and a reporter at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He currently serves on the board of directors overseeing student publications at the University of Michigan.

Emmrich has a “discerning understanding of the current news climate and a talent for finding new voices,” Wintour said in a statement, skills, she continued, that align with her team’s vision for Vogue.com.

Emmrich, who described himself as an admirer and “sometimes jealous competitor” of Wintour, said in a statement that he is looking forward to making Vogue.com an “essential read.”

As reported earlier Monday, Sally Singer, Vogue’s creative digital director, is departing the magazine. Emmrich, whose appointment to the editor role is effective immediately, clarified that he is not Singer’s replacement.
