Norah O’Donnell‘s tenure as CBS Evening News anchor will end on Friday, Jan. 24.

The network made the internal announcement on Friday, noting that O’Donnell agreed to stay with the broadcast through the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump and the first week of his second presidential term.

Her departure comes as CBS Evening News prepares to undergo a major overhaul. The newscast will now be overseen by 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens and anchored by the triumvirate of John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois in New York, and Margaret Brennan from Washington, D.C.

O’Donnell, who announced her departure in late July, is remaining with CBS News in an expanded role as a senior correspondent focusing on long-form reporting and interviews. She’ll be seen in primetime specials, as well as on CBS News Sunday Morning, and 60 Minutes.

O’Donnell has anchored the CBS Evening News for over five years, following a revolving door of anchors that included Katie Couric, Scott Kelly, Anthony Mason, and Jeff Glor. But her steadying presence did not improve the show’s fortunes as it continued to languish in third place in the ratings. ABC World News Tonight with David Muir and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt routinely finished ahead in total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo.

The changes at CBS Evening News are indicative of an industry facing a major realignment in 2025. Cord-cutting and declining viewership continue to upend business models, and the changes are being felt across the entire industry. Along with O’Donnell, familiar faces like Hoda Kotb and Andrea Mitchell have accepted new roles or chosen to leave the airwaves as anchor salaries are being cut.

And the cuts aren’t just being felt by on-air talent. Last week, Comcast announced it was detaching itself from MSNBC and CNBC—among other cable news outlets—in a direct acknowledgment that the cable business is in decline.
