Reddit became the latest platform to dip its toes into the artificial-intelligence-powered search waters with its announcement Monday that it is expanding its test of Reddit Answers.

The company said people come to its platform for advice, answers, and perspectives, and AI-powered search that surfaces discussions, hot takes, information, and recommendations from communities and conversations on Reddit will make its responses to search queries faster, more relevant, and smarter.

AI and search continue to become more intermingled, as OpenAI added AI-powered ChatGPT Search to its ChatGPT chatbot at the end of October, while Perplexity debuted in August 2022 and has advanced to the point of running a movie-style ad during the National Basketball Association Finals in June and beginning to test ads in its search results last month with agencies and brands including Indeed, PMG, Universal McCann, and Whole Foods Market.

Reddit Answers provides a conversational interface where users can ask questions and receive curated summaries of relevant conversations and details culled from across the platform, including links to related communities and posts.

This enables users to read relevant answers and snippets from other users, join conversations, and take their search to the next level with their own follow-up questions or those generated by Reddit Answers.

The test of Reddit Answers is being extended to a limited number of U.S. users, in English, and Reddit said it plans to add more languages and locations in the future.
