If Tressie Lieberman and Brian Niccol ever met over coffee to discuss reuniting, it’s a safe bet that the coffee came from Starbucks.

Lieberman will join the java giant in the newly created position of executive vice president, global chief brand officer, reporting to none other than Niccol, who became CEO at Starbucks in August.

Starbucks had dropped its global CMO role earlier this year, but had stated at the time it was looking for a “global brand creative leader.”

The company has found that person in Lieberman. While she was most recently CMO at Yahoo, Lieberman and Niccol have plenty of history, having worked together at Chipotle for five years and, prior to that, at Yum Brands’ Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

In her new role, which begins Nov. 4, Lieberman is based in Seattle and will report to Niccol. She will oversee marketing, product, digital, creative, and data analytics and insights.

Niccol said in a statement: “She has a proven track record of building strong brands, developing compelling products, creating great customer experiences, and leading breakthrough marketing.”

Lieberman added in a statement that she “can’t wait to partner with the team to write the next chapter of this iconic brand.”

Niccol is in the midst of trying to execute a major brand turnaround. Under his leadership, Starbucks has moved away from aggressive discounting, as it tries to regain its premium stature, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Starbucks also detailed some changes to its reporting structure.

Senior vp and executive creative director Dawn Clark and senior vp, store development, Americas Angele Robinson-Gaylord, will now report to executive vp and president of North America Sara Trilling.

And Dominic Carr will lead a unified global communications and corporate affairs team as chief communications and corporate affairs officer, with AJ Jones II reporting to him and continuing to lead corporate affairs.
