Of course, applicants will have to pass a Secret Service security check and meet certain criteria, including the ability to pay their own way to Washington, D.C. But those independent journalists who are successfully credentialed may even get a special chair in the briefing room. Leavitt revealed that a chair normally reserved for her staff will become the “New Media seat.”

As a sign of this pivot from legacy to new media, Leavitt awarded the first two questions of her first press briefing to journalists representing outlets that hadn’t previously been heard in the briefing room: Axios’ Mike Allen and Breitbart’s Matt Boyle, the latter of whom thanked her for “giving voices to new media outlets.”

“As the youngest press secretary in history, I take great pride in opening this room to new media voices,” Leavitt replied.

Time will tell if viewers like and subscribe to new media coverage of the Trump White House.
