Tools of the Trade is an AgencySpy feature to help highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing folks successful. The tools can be anything that helps people perform at their top form, from a favorite drafting table to the best software program to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.

Next up is Jake Bayham, head of strategy at Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners (BSSP).

What is one tool you use all the time at work, and how does it inspire your work?

Trail running, among other disconnected physical activities, like mountain bike rides, paddle boarding, surfing, etc. Beyond the mental and physical benefits of being active in the outdoors, trail running is the ultimate antidote to distraction. Distraction from meetings, emails, slacks, google, podcasts, social media, and so on. It provides an increasingly rare moment to work through information and ideas, instead of constantly adding to them.

Why is it your favorite?

Disconnected physical activities are a daily ritual for me, and running specifically I do roughly 2 times a week. Whether it’s before work, after work or a much-needed break in between, running is a critical part of my day in that it’s my time to think and process. Luckily for me, BSSP is nestled between the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the San Francisco Bay, so there are ample outdoor spaces accessible from our doorstep.

How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?

Outdoor activities have always been a part of my life, but I didn’t recognize their work-related value until more recently. Cultural conversations around remote work, productivity, and digital distraction, have helped me draw the connection between the two seemingly disparate acts.

How does it help you be successful?

For one, it helps me cut through the noise. The best strategies help simplify, and I find that is increasingly hard to do when the inputs seem endless. It’s also just a time for pure thought, with zero distractions.

Does it have sentimental value?

Deep sentimental value. Being in the outdoors is something that has been ingrained in me since a child.

Do you think your tool could go TikTok viral? Why or why not?

The sentiment of disconnecting and instead focusing on the trail is a bit at odds with TikTok virality. But with such focus on lowering screen time, mental health, and productivity, you never know what might catch on culturally!
