Uber has a new global head of advertising in Kristi Argyilan, effective today.

The exec joins from Albertsons, where she led the grocer’s ads business as senior vice president of retail media since July 2021.

After launching its advertising business in 2022, Uber announced in August that it was on track to hit $1 billion in ad revenue during 2024. That meteoric growth, Argyilan said, is part of what made the job with Uber impossible to turn down.

“There is an opportunity to put the commercial structure in place to support something that has grown that fast,” she explained. “[It’s] a great opportunity to reinforce what already exists.”

Uber Advertising has been without a leader since May, when former vp and general manager Mark Grether left the company to stand up an commerce media business at PayPal Ads, which formally launched in October.

“We’re thrilled to have Kristi join the Uber team, bringing decades of diverse experience across the advertising industry to help us build the next generation of our Advertising business,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, in a statement.

Prior to her role at the helm of Albertsons’ retail media network, Argyilan led the ads business at Target for more than six years, which included the founding of Roundel—Target’s advertising arm. But her early career was on the agency side: She spent seven years at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, five years at Hill Holliday, and a combined seven years at IPG agencies.

“The Uber offering is broader than a retail media network from a specific retailer, which makes it different,” Argyilan said. “As I will always say about commerce media there is a great opening in the marketplace for more alternatives. And Uber has every opportunity to be one of those scaled alternatives.”

Argyilan will report to Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, svp of delivery for Uber, and will work closely with Andrew Macdonald, svp of mobility and business operations. Megan Ramm, head of the Americas for Uber Advertising, and Paul Wright, head of international for Uber Advertising, will both report to Argyilan.
