Walmart Jumps on the Fashion Resale Bandwagon With ThredUp

Walmart is teaming up with resale platform ThredUp to offer preowned clothing, accessories, footwear and handbags on its website, as research shows growing interest in secondhand clothes among multiple generations of consumers.

From a new page on Walmart.com, shoppers can find 750,000 secondhand items from brands like Calvin Klein, Nike, Coach and Michael Kors.

In addition, customers will receive free shipping on orders of $35 or more, and free returns at Walmart stores or ThredUp. These services are also new benefits to ThredUp customers, noted Denise Incandela, head of fashion at Walmart U.S. Ecommerce.

Incandela also said Walmart’s selection of ThredUp inventory has been “carefully evaluated and selected … based on their overall quality and condition” and mainly includes “new” or “like new” items, though “gently used” accessories and handbags are also available.

The online partnership helps Walmart expand further in fashion, while also tapping into the sustainable secondhand shopping trend.

Research from Gartner has also shown momentum in sustainable fashion, with even fast-fashion retailers like H&M and Zara jumping on the trend, offering sustainable lines made from recycled materials.

Earlier this year, ThredUp released a Fashion Footprint Calculator to help consumers determine the carbon impact of their wardrobes—and encourage them to buy secondhand to reduce it.

“We know that customers, especially millennials, are interested in shopping resale clothing,” Incandela added. “In fact, according to ThredUp’s upcoming 2020 Annual Resale Report, 70% of consumers have bought or are now willing to buy secondhand.”

Eleven-year-old ThredUp closed a $175 million funding round last August to bring its total funding to date to over $300 million. At the time, it was already working with department stores Macy’s and JCPenney to offer secondhand items at their locations.

It was not immediately clear if the JCPenney partnership is still active, given that retailer’s bankruptcy proceedings.

Macy’s offers preowned fashion from brands like Vince, Theory, Alice & Olivia, Everlane, Parker, Topshop, Zara and Frame Denim through ThredUp Shops at 40 locations—although it does not carry brands from ThredUp that are also stocked by the retailer itself.
