The first pitch I ran was terrible. The second was only slightly easier. Now, having run hundreds of them, those things that seemed daunting at the time feel like a walk in the park today.
When someone gives you a crack at a new opportunity, jump on it. Even if it scares you a bit (actually, especially if it scares you).
Wear whatever, but always put on your team jersey
Ours is a team sport. Whatever your company delivers is bigger than your contribution. So, help your colleagues. Not because you must, but because you can.
Don’t strive to be anyone’s manager, but everyone’s go-to assistant. Don’t think of your job function as the entirety of your role. You possess a unique set of superpowers you can tap into to help move your whole team forward. Tangibly doing for others helps build genuine relationships that last, and taking a win-win, team approach creates more success for yourself and those around you.
Value a culture that values its people
People aren’t the only ones keeping an eye out for the next big thing.
Agencies are often looking for the next big thing, thinking that some kind of silver-bullet hire may give them a leg up. The strongest organizations are built differently. They invest in identifying, training, and nurturing talent that serves the whole. This is what creates a company’s cultural texture and the runway to build dynasties rather than championships.
Maybe that next company is worth a look. But think about the long game, too. You may just decide that sticking around could be the best career move you ever make.
